Re: The Subversive Naming Conventions of Early Valiant Titles

How could it be so valued over 2,000 years into the future (i.e. 4,100AD) when technology would have become so much more advanced in the interim? Otherwise was the original power not from our era but somewhere else? There's still a mystery as to the origin of the Rai Power/Blood. Just saying it was...

Anyone know what happened to the Second Life of Dr. Mirage (VH1) original cover art?

Back in high school I heard a local comics shop was getting their hands on the original cover art of Second Life of Dr. Mirage #1 (I believe this was before the first issue had even been released), so I called them up and they confirmed they would indeed be selling it as soon as it arrives, at the p...

Re: The Subversive Naming Conventions of Early Valiant Titles

"If the power gives Rai a very long lifespan, and VH1 Rai was the 42nd Rai, that's an average of 47 years of age for each holder, which is not long!?!?!?" I'm trying to remember; are Rai's designated as such upon birth (or shortly therafter) or only after they're grown? i.e. would the 47-y...

This solicitation blurb even refers to Rising Spirit/Bloodshot as RAI THE FIRST :hm:
How ironic that the actual Rai 0 depicts the creation of Rai "the Last".

Re: The Subversive Naming Conventions of Early Valiant Titles

Yeah Magnus is right, the original name for Bloodshot was Rising Spirit. He's referred to as Rising Sprit in some of the solicitations. It seems like the name change and nanite blood powers were changes done after Shooter left. http://valiantarchive.com/valiant/postunityprev.asp Wow, those are a lo...

Chiclo wrote: Fri May 19, 2023 8:32:58 am Rising Spirit also helped with a connection to Rai, both in the first syllable but in that Rai means spirit. Very elegant.

One was Project Rising Spirit.

Are you saying that was Shooter's original idea for the name of the Bloodshot series?

Re: The Subversive Naming Conventions of Early Valiant Titles

Definitely, that was one of the things that set VALIANT apart and made it feel more intelligent and well thought out. I think that was a Shooter thing. Star Brand was the brand that gave him power, not what the hero called himself. Plasm was the name of the world, and substance of the world. Powers...

The Subversive Naming Conventions of Early Valiant Titles

One of my favorite aspects of the early VH1 titles was how they weren't named after the actual main characters and/or the titles were actually antithetical to the main characters themselves—basically establishing the tone, before the first issues had even been released, of how Valiant would be openl...

Re: Question About VH1 XO Manowar Finale...

Ah thanks, I didn't realize it was actually the very last VH1 issue. Anyway I had always figured it only "wiped out" the XO series, but then it occurred to me that it would have to also impact much (if not all) of the other VH1 series as well, basically the Valiant equivalent of the Tommy ...

Question About VH1 XO Manowar Finale...

As presumably everyone knows by now, the final issue revealed that everything after issue 0 was basically a dream; but since the XO Manowar series is a part of the VH1 continuity, doesn't that mean all other issues of every VH1 series since that point were also a dream? Was this ever addressed in an...

This is actually a "phenomenon" which is often claimed by people in real life, and I remember reading about it since I was a kid so it's been "around" for a long time. It's obviously complete BS, and simply the human brain's way of finding patterns and perceiving cause-and-effect...

See Alan Moore's Swamp Thing for another example of being able to take a title in a completely different direction while respecting all pre-established continuity. I think it was ZWH who has commented on this here in the past.

Considering Harada's reaction to meeting Solar for the first time in Solar #3 I would think the opposite would be the case.

On the subject of the "fallibility/infallibility" of Rai 0, I think it ultimately comes down to a very simple question: How reliable are the words of a Geomancer? After all, that's what exactly Rai 0 *IS*. It's just a recounting of historical events being told by a Geomancer (Rokland Tate)...

Interesting. I just noticed that Good to hear I'm not the only one who was reading it that way all these years. :) Of course ironically, in most cases given such a scenario, it would be possible to convince the people who are evacuating to come back; just get the right people on the phone to talk t...

BTW, on a somewhat related note, this thread made me go back and re-read Rai 0 for what might just be the 100th time, and I can't believe I was mis-reading the HARD Corps evacuation all these years. I always thought their initial reason for leaving was because they were losing the war so badly and h...
