It depends on the artist. Jim Lee and David Finch's art don't depend on coloring to look good, so their sketch variants look awesome, whereas Micheal Turner's Civil War sketch is totally disappointing. I believe that coloring actually hinders a lot of artists these days. They're overdoing it in too ...

Don't forget 'feeding the speculation frenzy/market'... On the other hand, they hyped Valiant books with their 'price guide' but still this not only led to killing comics but VALIANT comics as well.
