Variants or VH2 & VH3

Post by Elveen »

So here is my question (spured on by DJ in another thread):

After I get all of the VH1 books (a reading list), what should I do...

1) Attempt to get the variants (golds, pinks, plats, reds, ect.)

2) Begin on VH2 and VH3...

I will state that VALIANTS are the only books I collect (I have a few others, but you know what I mean) and I collect VALIANTS because I like to read them...

So if the variants are the same books I already have read (with just a different cover) should I spend my $$$ on something else... VH2 & VH3?

I should have most / all of VH1 done in a few months (with some help from my friends here :thumb: ), so... what do you dudes think I should do?

(Now there is one wild card [insert joke here :D] in my thinking... original art... I might be getting sucked in....)

any ideas......?

Get to know the going prices for everything. When something, whether it's Acclaim or a variant Valiant, goes lower than usual you buy it.

Don't pigeon-hole yourself into just one thing.

Personally, I'm somewhat "scared' and very hesitant to start reading the VH2 or VH3 stuff. I don't like the idea of re-imagining characters that I've grown to like and respect.

For fun, I picked up Shadowman Vol 2 #1 and did not like it.

Would you like reading a comic that goes "I call on the power of Ninjak" or something like that?

Guaranteed that you would like the 50 or so comics that Defiant produced. Jim Shooter was involved in all the comics and it shows. It's not as strong as the Valiant Pre-Unity stuff but comes close. There are a lot of similarities to Valiant and it is fun to compare.

The only two comic companies that I'm collecting are Valiant VH1 and Defiant. No Marvels or DC. Although it's tempting to pick up the Iron Man Armored Wars Trade Paperback after visiting Bob Layton's website.

Indeed. I found some of the Acclaim elements enjoyable and worth pursuing. :thumb:

Heh...I've got a complete set of regular Defiant books for sale on Ebay now at about $.50 a piece.

Already posted this in the "Sell" section, but here's the link:

http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQfgtpZ1QQfrp ... aebler2003

On the one hand we disagree, since I really enjoyed Shadowman volume 2 # 1 (sociopath hitman walks into a bar, asks for his usual drink & stuffed teddy bear!).

But on the other, I have to say Defiant comics do echo the "house style" (both artwork & writing) of early Valiant more than Acclaim. Ditto Shooter's later Broadway comics line.

Ok, so your right.... I do want them all....

but for me it is the order of aquiring that I am focusing on...

Gold is so shiny.....

on the other hand, my favorite part of comic books is reading them...

Ok, so I know that I am going to at least try VH2 and VH3, who am I kidding...

but when.... (VH1 completist or ......)

(BTW Brian, when I was in college I got all my buddies into BTE by playing "Friction Baby" every time we played poker... I loved King of New Orleans, Still life with cooley, and WWOZ, overall a real good album!)

Ninjak was one of the best VH2 books imho, because it completely throws out all the old stuff. You don't have that feeling of loss. Its like a completely new book. that and Busiek does a great job writing it.

If you have never read quantum and woody then you should go after the vh2 books.

If you like to read your books then you should get the VH2/VH3 books and give them a try. Like Brian said there are some good books in the bunch.

Still if you see a Gold/Pink/VVSS cheap pick it up.

Friction Baby is a heavy album for BTE and one of there best.
I think that overall from song one to 12 "How Does your Garden Grow" there third album is there very best.....funny thats the album that Electra dropped them after it's release.

I considered Ninjak VH-2 one of the strongest because of the way Busiek wrote the book. Denny really was the "Spider-man" type character VH-2 had going for it. It didn't catch on. But it's a very strong series through all 12 issues.
I started the save Ninajk petition back when I found out from Gomez it was going to be canceled.....just last week I found all the email's I printed out from that petition and it was great to see regular posters NOW that signed and mailed me an email back then....SonicDan & MagnusR...
Anthony Kotch used to come around here along with Petrilak who helped me get the word out at the time....

If I get some time I'll post those letters for the petition....I had each and everyone who signed the petition also give me a reason why they loved the title and some are pretty funny.

Definitely have to at least read the VH2 and VH3 material even if you decide to not keep them in your collection. Besides, IMO its not a total waste of time anyway. There were some pretty good reads in those runs. Just don't expect Preunity quality.

I've only read about half the VH2 books but my suggestion would be to read the SOLAR one-shots first.....MOTA and Revelations. As I recall it sets up the origin of the VH2 universe and explains WHY the differences occur. The HOE mini-series adds to the info from the one-shots. I think you will enjoy the VH2 books more if you read the SOLAR's first.

The correct answer is a 4 issue mini-series called Solar: Hell On Earth.

Priest is the writer on it and it was one of the VERY good stories VH-2 had to offer.

I personally pick these up when I find them.

VH-2 Bloodshot was the best title from #1 thru #16..

very consistent is the phrase... Velluto still very underated as an artist was SWEET!

Len K. was a VERY good writer for VH-2.

Always room for a good HOE joke. Those who have gardens or ever worked a farm know what I'm talking about.

Check out that mini-series. Its worth the read.

I collected a common set first, so that I could read a title from start to finish. This took me 8 months from start to finish (IIRC). Then when there was nothing more to collect, I started in on the variants, golds, VVSS and HTF books. But in that regard I have been blessed with finding books CHEAP... i.e. Unity Red $1.50, X-O 1/2 gold $.8.00, Shadowman #16 vh2 glow in the dark $1.00, Harbinger #0 pink $.78 etc

I bought to READ, then worried about the variants later.

BTW... here is all that I am needing these days (on the VH1 side of the house):

VVSS
Psi-Lords #1
Timewalker #1
Eternal Warrior #27
Shadowman #0

Others
CEAR
Unity TPBs 1, 2, 3, 4
Unity TPBs Diamond Exclusive

(any help there ? I am ok with a beat up copy of one of these as well)

The only reason I picked up Acclaim books because I was sent out to Vegas on temp duty and was able to pick up my first 80 issues for $.05 cents a piece, how could I NOT start to collect them at that point ? Besides, being a Bloodshot fan I read Bloodshot VH2 and loved it !!! But again lucked in to HTF variants like SM #16 GITD and Shadowman (good the bad, the very ugly).

I just focused on common books then went to the variants and continued to look for targets of opportunity in what appeared to be a target rich environment at times.... I always ALWAYS bought cheap. :thumb:

as long as you aren't expecting pre-unity "magic", the VH2-3 stuff isn't as bad as one might expect...it is actually better (IMHO) than the tail end of X-O and Magnus...and you can generally find them on the CHEAP...I've picked up almost full runs of most series for under a quarter per book... ...you aren't gonna find golds/variants for that
Why waste time learning, when ignorance is instantaneous?
