Confession...

Post by Zool »

I am an ardent comics fan and frequent evangelist for the form (as I'm sure many here are), I'm big on Marvel (less so on DC) and have all manner of books from independants as well as a couple of slices of sadly dead universes (Milestone, after Valiant, is a fave) and my collection, by all but the most hardcore standards, can be said to be quite expansive. However.

Reading this board for a bit I've come to realise something, after trying to compose replies to a number of threads and failing, after looking up on Wikipedia some character names I don't recognise...

I barely know the Valiant Universe (and this has surprised me somewhat)

Don't get me wrong, I know Shadowman (I own from just post Unity up to the Chaos Effect), I know Turok to the point where Monark got some weird 'person body', I've got the Harbinger TPB, and #0 and a couple of other bits, a chunk of Eternal Warrior and the odd issue of other stuff here and there (H.A.R.D. Corps, Deathmate, a couple of issues of Rai and some other bits and bobs).

But, I think because so much of it ties together so well, I just don't see the WHOLE. Hell, I don't own one issue of Magnus or Solar (what's wrong with me?)

So this is my confession. I'm looking to rectify it soon, but I ask you, denizens of this mighty board... where's a good place to start? (in terms of books?)

I would think Solar 1-10 or so and then the Unity Saga would give you a pretty good foothold into the base of most of the stories

The trades are a good place to start. They can picked up dirt cheap and will give you an idea of whether of not you want to continue collecting the rest.

Cheers for the response, sorry if I broke anyone's minds.

How many trades are there? I like trades generally, but I didn't realise that Valiant was that well covered.

My strategy was going to be; scour a local comics fare and pick up anything I could find.

In a way, I envy your position. It would be cool to pick up an Alpha and Omega HC and read that story for the first time. Or most of the Pre-Unitys for that matter. :thumb:

Rai tpb
X-O tpb
both magnus tpb's...but these aren't the easiest to find
both solar tpb's...one of these is hard to find
Why waste time learning, when ignorance is instantaneous?

I'd say start with Magnus and Solar pre-unity as they lay a lot of the groundwork. After that, read Unity and follow it up with Rai 0. That should get you just about all the knowledge about the Valiant U you'd need to follow any of the other books.

The Cheap

Unity Saga - 4 trades
X-O
Rai
Shadowman
Harbinger
Valiant Era (contains several key issues from various series)

The ones that are getting kinda scarce (and pricey)

Magnus 3 different trades
Solar 2 different trades plus a hardcover
Unity Diamond Trades

Definately what everyone else said. The pre-unities are the best.

Pick up Unity 0 and 1. Unity #1 gives a timeline of what happened during the Unity Saga.

There are 3 Magnus TPBs? Was this a typo or am I missing one? There's Steel Nation. Invasion. And...?
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

I was wondering that too, but I guess the Vs. Predator one is a tpb too.

The books to get ASAP:

Magnus: Steel Nation
Solar: Alpha and Omega
Solar: Second Death

Concentrate on getting these first in that order. Everything else will fall into place afterwards.
19) VALIANT WILL RETURN.
It'll be a celebration of complete chaos and destruction.
It'll be a glorious time of weeping. The earth will shift on its axis.

I'm now walking the path...

I will report my, rather late, findings as and when.

Thanks all.

Here is a link to the Alpha and Omega. It's much easier to read in TPB than in the comics, and it is a great story.

I agree with everyone here about starting from the beginning and getting the Magnus and Solar books first, but you can get the original Magnus issues #1-8 for as much or less than the TPB reprints will cost. The same goes for the Second Death TPB which reprints Solar #1-4.

True, but its much easier to tote a TPB on a plane or to the beach.

It all depends on whether you just want a reader copy or you're collecting them. Reader versions of the trades would still be cheaper than getting the individual books.

If you can find them. :(
I've wanted beat up copies of the Magnus TPB's for a while, but no luck...
Of course, I stopped looking for almost 9 months... maybe I shall start again. :)

Yeah, you can't find them if don't look. About the time you stop a whole bunch will pop up.
