Killing Off a Character

Post by ian_house »

Killing off a major character is all the rage these days (just like yoyos  ). Cap's gone, Bats has gone... so who from the Valiant Universe would you dramatically kill off for the big sales of death and reborn books?

Would you do it differently?

The Harbinger kids.

All of them.

I remember my favorite "killing off a character" story was when Warren Ellis killed off the entire Stormwatch team. Something like that is totally unexpected and actually pretty shocking. Plus it set up the coming of the Authority. Something similar with the Harbys would be interesting.

One of the horribly wonderful things about Valiant was that they did not come back.

The "reborn" thing did not happen.

The Pete, Harbinger, Visitor, thing was sort of like that but I think it was really something different.

I hope VEI (if new books come) does not copy Marvel and DC like this.

Nah not proposing any of that nonsense. Just wondering with the current trend who would you expect Valiant (if they existed) to go this route with.

Kill them all for a new team or bring some back?

Or bring them back as Black Lantern Harbingers?

Man, you're that this is definitely a trend in comics, and boy, do I hate it!

I think it's the lamest excuse I've ever heard that a writer and editor have run out of ideas. Can't get attention any other way? Death! Death! Death!

We're all about being a death culture? Really?

Look, if it happens in the story, that's fine. For crying out loud, I've written Jack Bauer, so I've killed and killed and killed lots of characters. But when that is the reason for the story's existence in the first place, and that's the reason for the hype, we collectively really need to take a step back and look at ourselves.

Rant over. Thanks for reading.

Used to be able to say at Marvel, nobody stays dead except for Bucky, now we can't even say that.

I think have Solar killed would be a great way to start the new VEI Valiant Universe. Maybe some way to save the universe he had to be killed.

It could be page 1 of the first VEI mini, and then the rest of the mini could show what led up to it, and then..... new books.

Didn't Mephisto hold Silver Surfer's mom hostage only for her to die before the story was over? I read that years ago and can't quite remember it clearly.

I enjoy Ellis' work but of course this was first done w/the original Doom Patrol.

Tohru Nakadai, still waiting :?

Bias aside, I think bring back one of the earlier Valiant characters would be more interesting than killing off a character now, who arguably has been dead since Acclaim folded.

I don't care who they kill or even if they bring them back, as long as it is written well.

They can do what they want as long as I get to read a good story.
