The Titles That Didn't Come Over
Why do other companies have Turok, Dr. Solar and Magnus? Forgive me for the noob question here but I've noticed those titles out and was curious.

Re: The Titles That Didn't Come Over
They were always licensed properties. Originally VALIANT licensed them from Random House, who had purchase Golden Books/Gold Key. They then became part of Classic Media, which was more recently bought by DreamWorks. There are many more details about the ownership that are hazy and hard to figure out.

Re: The Titles That Didn't Come Over
That's right. Valiant started from Voyager Communications (1989) with a small group of existing characters from Dell/Gold Key (starting with 1954 Turok thru 1982) to appeal to a starting group of fans for the Valiant universe starting with Magnus #1 in 1991. They (Magnus, Solar, Turok) never belonged to Valiant and may have belonged to someone else in 1989 even before Random House. Today they belong to Dreamworks and any new publications (other publishers) are licenses, too.
Valiant today is 100% Valiant-owned... No licenses from others and nothing can be lost or taken away.

Amen to that!
Although I read the first 2 issues of the new Magnus reboot, and, I'm--well, uh...it wasn't too bad actually. But Dynamite!

Re: The Titles That Didn't Come Over
FVL's Magnus at Dynamite! wasn't bad either. Magnus is a great character, as is Solar (I'm less enthralled with Turok as a character/concept overall) and it's too bad VEI couldn't have maybe purchased them before the DreamWorks sale, as they are now likely buried and unlikely to see the light of day beyond their current licenses.AnarchoMambo wrote:Amen to that!

However, Divinity has fully replaced Solar at this point, Savage is basically Turok, and War Mother partly fills the Magnus slot. The more I see of that new series' previews, the more excited I am for it.

Re: The Titles That Didn't Come Over
Didn't Shooter do a Solar for Dark Horse a couple years back? I didn't pay attention to it at the time (don't know why!) but I thought i remembered that.

He did. I think it was based in thenscripts he was going to use when VEI thought they were going to get the license back. There was some shadiness around that deal, too.otomo wrote:Didn't Shooter do a Solar for Dark Horse a couple years back? 2010, he did Magnus, Solar, Turok and the Mighty Samson.otomo wrote:Didn't Shooter do a Solar for Dark Horse a couple years back? I didn't pay attention to it at the time (don't know why!) but I thought i remembered that.
If you read the old Valiant Solar, it was a lot like that but not quite as good.
