Barry Windsor-Smith signature on X-O Manowar # 1
I have read that Barry Windsor-Smith doesn't sign comics. How rare is his signature on the 1992 X-O Manowar #1 ? Did BWS sign a lot back then? I have one issue signed by BWS and Bob Layton. I have seen tons of Valiant comics signed by Layton and Shooter. But, I have not seen any signed by BWS (other than this one). I was thinking of sending it to CBCS for their verified signature program if it might be a true rarity. What do you think?

I would say very to extremely rare and that there are several fans who would covet and pay a pretty penny for such a book, particularly in high grade. Did you witness BWS autograph or did you come to own the book later?

Re: Barry Windsor-Smith signature on X-O Manowar # 1
I bought it later (and did not know what I had) and had to research the signature to figure it out. It is in great condition. Someone I showed it to said it is his "old style signature." Apparently his signature changed? I'm not sure since I had not ever seen his signature on a comic. I'll see if I can figure out how to post a pic of the signature here for you to check it out. So what is the deal with BWS and signatures on comics (especially Valiant?). I know he had a "falling out with Valiant." I have seen his signatures in marvel books on the Internet when doing research... But did he ever sign Valiant comics in the early days? What is the history there?

Sure, this might be the easiest way for you to do this.
go to the App store and download Tapatalk. This is kind of a blog centralized type of thing. From there, search for Valiantfans.com, and this sight should pop up. Tapatalk will allow you to take pictures and post them here. It's the easiest way I've come across to post pics here.
If you have any problems with this, pm me and I will see what I can do

Ok... Thanks for the advise TheeBaldMoose. I thought that I might have been simply overlooking a "picture attachment icon" (like the paper clip icon when attaching photos to email). But apparently it is more in depth than that. I will have to try and work on that this weekend. I am in the process of trying to batten down the hatches and possibly leave southeast Louisiana due to this Hurricane Nate that will be bearing down on us.

Re: Barry Windsor-Smith signature on X-O Manowar # 1
It looks as though the same exact type of ink was used for both signatures (very fine tipped gold metallic color). To me, this would suggest that the signatures were done at the same time. Bob Layton and BWS could have possibly used the same pen, or at least two identical pens from the same pack.
Does anyone recognize or remember anything to shed some light on this?
Does anyone have a BWS signature like this on a Valiant comic (X-O, or any other... that would help me date this signature)?
Did BWS always sign on the bottom left?
When did BWS quit signing?

Looks legit to me based on comics I have with BWS signatures on them. Congratulations!

These look authentic to me. I would have them verified by CBCS. That would be a sweet slab, with a pressing as well. Tons of folks would want that.

Re: Barry Windsor-Smith signature on X-O Manowar # 1
I last saw BWS at a convention in Toronto in 2000. I don't know if he's done too many shows since then and I think the last comic work he produced was around 2002 when he did 2 or 3 covers for Marvel (I recall a Thor and an FF...but there were more). I do know he won't sign for CGC SS and I think the real story is - he doesn't do conventions anymore so there's no place for him to sign comics!
Of all the talents that have moved on/don't do comics anymore, he's the one I miss the most. I've got every issue of Rune fer chrissakes and his crappy (storywise, anyway) Wildstorm books. I really hope Valiant (or, honestly, any publisher) can bring him back to do anything.
To the original post - I've only got 2 signed books by BWS and that sig looks good to me - congrats on a great score!

Re: Barry Windsor-Smith signature on X-O Manowar # 1
Thanks for the votes of confidence that the signature is authentic.
Keep the comments coming about BWS and his signing habits. I am still in the dark as to if, and when he signed comics during the Valiant years. Has anyone seen another X-O Manowar with his signature on it? How rare do you think his signature is on this... Or any other Valiant comic?
What is the reason for his different styles of signature? Is one style more desired?
Thanks for your input!

Re: Barry Windsor-Smith signature on X-O Manowar # 1
Ok...this is what I have learned so far thanks to a few Valiantfan members:
1) BWS did sign raw books (books that he worked on) before there was CGC ( which started in 2004?). At conventions he usually limited to two books per person.
2) He did do some of the signed and numbered Valiant Validated Signature series which came with a certificate of authenticity from Valiant.com. One of these was Solar #1 signed by Jim Shooter, Don Perlin, and BWS (numbered to 50).
3) He did do at least 2 CGC Signature Signings in 2008-2009. Then, apparently, he said he would not allow his signature to be certified anymore (I'm not sure of the reasoning). So there are a very limited amount of CGC witnessed signatures.
4) Apparently he has been MIA in the comic world and hasn't been to a convention in over a decade.
So, he probably would sign raw comics that he worked on... There just hasn't been any opportunity for the fans.

Re: Barry Windsor-Smith signature on X-O Manowar # 1
That's definitely real Barry and Bob Layton.
In the 90s, Barry always signed at the bottom, if he could and that's his weird signature. Seen in in person at least 3 times. I used to hound the guy at all LA area signings for a few years. The man may be the reason I stayed in comics and do what I do.
