Re: Barry Windsor-Smith signature on X-O Manowar # 1
Thanks for the input Ed. I have searched on EBay looking at 1992 signed X-O Manowar #1 comics for years. It is probably my favorite comic. I did not ever see one claiming to have a BWS signature. Of course I wasn't looking for it... I just always came across Shooter and Layton signatures on copies of this book.

His signature changes pretty drastically through the years. That may be from right around the time the book was released.
Bob Layton's signature is also a little different years later.
This one was definitely signed in the summer of 1992 at San Diego Comic-Con by both creators and it's basically identical (except BWS is stacked instead of horizontal):
There's a chance your book was signed the same day... same signatures, same ink.

Wow...Awsome book in 9.8 with seven sigs! Thanks For the pic Greg. BWS did sign in the bottom left. Even the ink color looks similar for the signature of BWS and Bob Layton for both books.

Did you ever send it to CBCS?Juki wrote: ↑Fri Oct 06, 2017 12:20:26 am I have read that Barry Windsor-Smith doesn't sign comics. How rare is his signature on the 1992 X-O Manowar #1 ? Did BWS sign a lot back then? I have one issue signed by BWS and Bob Layton. I have seen tons of Valiant comics signed by Layton and Shooter. But, I have not seen any signed by BWS (other than this one). I was thinking of sending it to CBCS for their verified signature program if it might be a true rarity. What do you think?
Has anybody else ever seen a X-O Manowar #1 signed by BWS?

Funny you should mention.... I just sent it off last week to CBCS along with 3 other comics for my first submission to them. They e-mailed me a few days ago saying it was received and placed in their vault awaiting service. It will probably take some time. I have never seen another X-O #1 signed by BWS.geocarr wrote: ↑Wed Jun 10, 2020 12:23:10 pmDid you ever send it to CBCS?Juki wrote: ↑Fri Oct 06, 2017 12:20:26 am I have read that Barry Windsor-Smith doesn't sign comics. I told CBCS if they cannot verify the signatures (BWS and Bob Layton) not to grade. For some reason, CBCS downgrades the comic if they can’t verify a signature to about a 7. If they can’t verify then I will send to CGC for green label. But, I’m kind of interested to see what happens with CBCS verified signature service.

Yes it is a legit sig. and yes CBCS does verify them. I have a Solar 3 and Solar 10 both verified signatures of BWS. Outside of those two books I have always wanted XO (actually a couple of them!) and Unity 0 signed by him. I think those are some of the most important books he did for Valiant.i love having them in my collection.

Wow... that is 2 significant books to have BWS sigs. Especially Solar #3!
It would be great if Valiant fans had easier access to his signatures especially for these first appearance Valiant comics. We are all not getting any younger.

I agree, that's why I jumped on them when they came up..To me they are two of the most important Valiant characters because of all they have meant to the universe. Harada being my (and alot of others!) favorite not good guy made it extra cool.

Re: Barry Windsor-Smith signature on X-O Manowar # 1
I met BWS at a con once and he signed three Valiant books for me ... I also got him to sign three cards from the Upper Deck set. On the books he wrote his scribble, but on the cards he did the same initials he used on covers (BWS). This was at least 20 years ago ... Bob Layton and Don Perlin were at the same con.
I also have a bunch (like 50) Ultraverse Rune books that he signed. They are pretty easy to find cheap.

So lucky! I am a card collector too do that's extra cool! What cards did you have him sign? I too have gotten the cheap Rune signed books just because of him.depluto wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2020 11:59:28 am I met BWS at a con once and he signed three Valiant books for me ... Here’s a couple of the cards (I gave one away). Might have to dig a bit for the books.

Very nice. I loved his Eternal Warrior. I read that before his other work. It was so creepy, I loved it!

Re: Barry Windsor-Smith signature on X-O Manowar # 1
Two cool cards to have signed. A&A #0 artwork is a fav of mine.
It is kind of strange how BWS has multiple sigs. I wonder if the “chicken scratch” signature developed because he didn’t really want to give his “artwork” signature away to fans?
I wouldn’t think one sig would be faster than another when in a hurry. Although just writing “BWS” is short and quick.... but the “chicken scratch” sig should be quick as well with what appears to be multiple “U”s or “W”s and /or “M”s in sequence with a break in between.

Yeah... great sig on the unity #1.... another great BWS cover. You can definitely tell that the first word is “Windsor.” So, I am assuming the entire sig is supposed to be “Windsor Smith.” Although, the “Smith” part on all on the Valiant sigs I have seen so far is illegible.valiantdude wrote: ↑Tue Jun 16, 2020 2:46:08 pm Heres another bws sig example from unity #1

Not sure where I stored them ... I think it was Solar 1 and 2 and Bloodshot 1.

Whoop ... found one. It’s in better shape than it looks, weird reflections off the bag. Don Perlin signed it at the same show. I added Shooter later.
