Valiant Marketing Plan '93

Post by nycjadie »

I picked up a Valiant Marketing Plan, dated May to November 1993. A few questions, tidbits I noticed (outside of the beautiful B&W artwork):

What was this?:
Solar, God of War Mini-Series (working title - September to November [tentative]) - Three part miniseries (the first ever by Valiant) details the quest of the split persona Solar (from Solar, Man of the Atom 23) to find and destroy the Spider Aliens' homeworld.

Deathmate marketing included 4 planned POP posters, two from Valiant and two from Image. Were all 4 of these produced? I bet Dan would know.

Did this ever happen?
Televisoin Support - Extensive advertising and promotional support has been arranged through the Sci-Fi Channel.

Deathmate: The Tour to End All Time:
-Apparently cost participating retailers $1250, with retailers nominated by distributors based on their initial orders for Deathmate Prologue!

Gold Logo Program - Notes include planned gold books for Secret Weapons 1.
VVSS Program - Notes include planned VVSS books for X-O 0, Secret Weapons 1 and Mirage 1.

Gold Logo Co-op Program (verbatim):
Valiant will assign a value of $40 each to 8000 mixed gold logo books and will make them available through distributors as a co-op program for retailers. This $320K fund will be run like a regular co-op program, except retailers will receive gold logo books for advertising and promotion. Since all gold logo books published to date have, by all estimates, a secondary market value well in excess of $60, the retailer will receive value in excess of the $40 value ascribed to the gold logo book. This program is scheduled to begin in October. We wil keep you informed as this program develops and we hope you will want to participate.

Doctor Mirage Premium Gold Logo T-shirt Offer - As a special premium, for every 35 items ordered (can be mixed), retailers will receive a free, limited edition, four color, Doctor Mirage gold logo t-shirt printed on high quality, 100% prshunk cotton Hanes Beefy T t-shirt.

Note about X-O 0 poster being the first "for sale" poster. Were there any others?

Note about fine art prints (I think the first was the B&W X-O 0). Any others?

Nice find. There are at least 2 versions of the May to Nov 1993 Marketing Plans. Here is comicsyte95's copy: http://www.valiantfans.com/Valiant1993Marketing.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Below are pictures of my copy. The front cover looks the same as comicsyte's copy.
Image

Here's a pic of the spreadout plans showing the front and back. In my copy, the back has text. While in comicsyte's copy, the back has the X-O #0 cover.
Image

Here's a pic of the centerfold pages. In my copy, the page on the right has Deathmate art with Grifter, Shadowman, Dr Eclipse, and Master Darque. In comicsyte's copy, it has text about Deathmate Yellow.

There are other art and page order differences.

Also here's a guide I have about the Co-op Program . . .

I think the fine art prints are the X-O #0 B&W and Ninjak B&W lithographs. Ninjak pic borrowed from whovianone:

X-O Manowar #0 cover 19" x 23.5" lithograph gold edition with COA. #484 / 1200 signed by Joe Quesada.

Related to this, there was also a X-O #0 print for the Chicago area presentation of the Valiant Traveling Art Show:

X-O Manowar #0 11" x 17" print signed by Joe Quesada. This limited edition print of 1,000 was produced for the Chicago area presentation of the Valiant Traveling Art Show by 23rd Century Artworks and Moondog's.

Super interesting, Iggy.

I'm almost certain my copy is the same as Comicsyte's, but I'd have to double check for sure.

Is this Solar issues #33-35 (Genocide parts 1-3)? I have not read these in a loooong time so if someone else can confirm . . .

This was cool... I love stuff like this. Promotional material that gives insight into whatever was going on at the time. I've got the two prints, but my X-O print is beat to *SQUEE* because i had to fold it over at the edges to fit into a frame - it was an awkward size IIRC.

Definitely. I will post the other original VALIANT marketing stuff I have in the next few posts. They may not be worth much outside this community but I always enjoy reading them.

The 31-page Valiant marketing plans from May to Dec 1992 folder was distributed to retailers who attended the 5th Annual Capital City Sales Conference on May 5th 1992 (sponsored by Capital City Distribution Inc.) in Madison, WI. It can be viewed here: http://www.valiantfans.com/Valiant1992M ... alCity.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I particularly like this spider alien character sketch by BWS.

Here is the 5th Annual Capital City Sales Conference pin that was given out to the conference attendees.

Here is another set of the Valiant Marketing Plans. This 2nd set has whiter pages and the print quality is slightly different (black ink is more raised to the touch). But after comparing both sets, neither is a copy of each other. In some cases, the 1st set has more details along the edges than the 2nd set. In other cases, the 2nd set has more details along the edges than the 1st set. I guess both sets are copies of a more "master" set. Content and page count wise, they are both the same.

This early Valiant marketing package includes a red Valiant folder, an original letter signed by Seymour Miles, the marketing plans for May to Dec 1992 with 25 pages of material, 2 gold books, and 2 H.A.R.D.Corps #1 preview posters (black and blue versions).

The 25-page marketing plans brochure was used for the Diamond Sales Seminar on June 15th 1992. It can be viewed here: http://www.valiantfans.com/Valiant1992Marketing.pdf" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Wow, that stuff is gold. Will read through those pdfs soon. I never knew X-O and Eternal Warrior were supposed to have a flipbook 0 and 00.

"We will use quality stories and art, tied together in a logical, coherent universe - which is innovatively marketed - to continue to build our company."

So simply stated, that is exactly what made Valiant so special when it came out.

love this stuff...
What are the contents of the original art program book?

Also,

yes there were many commercials aired about once every hour for the deathmate crossover on the sci-fi channel at the time...
Nothing spectacular, but some funny panel animation, and cheesy voice over..

I have to find my copy which is buried somewhere . . . but according to the thread below, it has B&W pictures of Valiant art you could buy directly from the artist.
