You know what might be interesting is to place these next to the overall distribution numbers. That might give a general formula that you can use to estimate othe Variant Print runs.

Re: DINO CONFIRMATION: Imperium 1:20 Print Runs
So we use the print run data from Comichron and basic mathematics to obtain the expected number of ratio variants based on that data.nycjadie wrote:You know what might be interesting is to place these next to the overall distribution numbers. That might give a general formula that you can use to estimate other Variant Print runs.
Then, we reverse that same process using the confirmed print run data provided by Dinesh.
Then we start comparing data to see what patterns can be found.
For example, we KNOW that 350 copies of Imperium #1 (Braithwaite 1:40) were printed, but we EXPECTED 301 copies to be printed. This could mean:
- a.) There were 49 EXTRA copies printed (which makes sense, since who prints 301 copies of a book. Clearly 350 works better and provides nearly +50 copies for comps, artists, promos, damages, etc.)
b.) The print run for Imperium #1 was NOT 12,028 as reported, but rather 14,000 (which makes sense, since who prints 12,028 copies of a book. Clearly 14,000 works better and provides nearly +2,000 copies for comps, artists, promos, damages, etc.).

Thanks DBS and Dino for the print numbers.
I still need issues 11 and 12 and 6 of these 1:20s.

Understand that if you remove Bleeding Monk and Harbinger #0, you get 50 issues. Still, I like to include them as part of the complete story as (in my opinion) they are.
So, from this we could potentially surmise:In an ideal world we never would have wrapped up Harbinger. The Imperium and Life and Death stories would have just rolled us to 50... ...they are (along with Omegas) one large story. Unfortunately taking year long breaks and coming back with the same numbering would have killed the book.

The variants near the end of Diggle's Shadowman run have to be pretty low print run as well, given the numbers on that book.

No doubt! Though it is unlikely that the current management team at Valiant will divulge those numbers publicly.IMJ wrote:The variants near the end of Diggle's Shadowman run have to be pretty low print run as well, given the numbers on that book.
But what the Imperium numbers show is that if you think a print run is 100 copies, then it is likely 300 copies. If you think it is 250 copies, it is likely 450-500 copies.

For completists, I think the end of the Ninjak run, those variants will be tough to get. #23-26. The 1:50s

Re: DINO CONFIRMATION: Imperium 1:20 Print Runs
So I spend time this afternoon inventorying my Imperium books.
Good news is that I have at least one copy of every possible issue.
Strange news is for me is that for some of the 1:20s, I have like 10 copies; for other 1:20s I have only 1 copy.
So IF anyone else is in a similar position, hit me up and maybe we have surpluses of the books each other does not and can work a trade or three.
I DO plan to submit for a full CGC set, and do not like only having 1-2 shots on certain books/variants.

That's amazing! Did you order these ratios new at the time? Like during a DCBS order, did you order 10 copies of a 1:20?DirtbagSailor wrote:Strange news is for me is that for some of the 1:20s, I have like 10 copies

Re: DINO CONFIRMATION: Imperium 1:20 Print Runs
To be 100% honest, I have no idea how it worked out this way. I may have clicked 10x on a DCBS order (as I have done that a few times before). I was living in the Middle East at the time, and ordering all of my Valiant issues/variants online (DCBS, Impulse Creations, Midtown, Things From Another World, etc.).IMJ wrote:That's amazing! I believe that what likely went down, is that I was tracking and/or predicting variant print runs at the time, and likely suspected that the last few issues of Imperium would have crazy low numbers (which did turn out to be arguably true).
Why I don’t have 5 copies of each 1:20 is beyond me, as I generally do not have only 1 copy of anything worth collecting (it is often quite difficult to find and submit raw book in the hopes of obtaining a 9.8 when you only buy one copy. Most books right off the press do not grade 9.8, so there is a bit of numbers juggling that is part of the game).

Re: DINO CONFIRMATION: Imperium 1:20 Print Runs
I don't know what my total haul is, but like you, I figured that the incentives on the last few issues were worth grabbing multiples of. I'm very happy to have 2 9.8s of the Montoya variant for #16.DirtbagSailor wrote:To be 100% honest, I have no idea how it worked out this way. Re: DINO CONFIRMATION: Imperium 1:20 Print Runs
No now I get to talk about collectibility and/or market value.
(In my opinion) ALL covers for this series (and The Life & Death of Toyo Harada #1 through #4, which is basically Imperium #17 through #22) are worth collecting in full.
We 100% KNOW how many copies were printed; HOWEVER, we do NOT know how many copies actually were distributed to retailers, or how many copies made it into the hands of collectors. We do NOT know how many copies were eventually destroyed by Valiant (as is/was their policy).
Will they ever become ASM #300 or Hulk #181? No. Not likely.
However, insomuch as what we (life-long Valiant Fans) tend to enjoy, these are difficult to overlook (graded or raw) for personal collections. These books are among the absolute BEST work Valiant has produced.
Also, NOW is an amazing time, in that the world has no clue as to the actual print runs of these books, and as a result, has not taken ANY action to mark them up.
"Most" are still available for $15-20 online, or at a number of online LCSs.
I say "most" because Imperium #11 (Walsh 1:20) and Imperium #3 (Braithwaite 1:20) have already dried up (as far as I can tell).
SO, without assigning a specific value to any book (since who knows at this point), it does appear that there are three ways to look at these books:
1.) Significance: Is the book "significant?"
2.) Scarcity / Rare: Is the book "scarce" or "rare?"
Yes, all covers/copies of Imperium are arguably scarce; however, the 1:40s and 1:20s fall into the category of "rare" as well.
Consider that we "know" the print runs for these books; however, we ALSO know that excess and/or undistributed copies are eventually destroyed by Valiant. So when we look at a print run, we must also consider that the number of copies in existence is likely LESS than the number of copies printed. Additionally, the number of copies in circulation available for purchase is also likely to be LESS than the number of copies in existence, and also LESS than the number of copies printed.
(meaning that, yes, 325 copies of Imperium #11 (Walsh 1:20) were printed; however, it is possible that only 250 were distributed and 100 were destroyed. Of those 250, most are either in a private collection (unavailable), or with a retailer (unlisted). So you might only see 1-5 copies made available each year despite there being a print run of 325 copies).
Below is a quick breakdown (in categories) based on rarity of these issues by known print run only (NOT sales trends, since we really do not know that info yet).
