Solar, Man of Atom - Alpha and Omega

Post by Jrosen »

I've decided to start reading pre-Unity Valiant. I picked up several back-issues of Solar at my LCS, and it talks about a large final panel for Alpha and Omega. Was Alpha and Omega a special insert into these book? None of the issues that I bought (1, 9, 10, 11) had anything still attached to the middle. It seems like in the middle of issue 1 and 9 the story stops and turns over to another story. I'm assuming this second story is Alpha and Omega, but I didn't notice any special "break" in book 10. I've only glanced through them as I'm waiting to pick up the remaining issues before I really sit down and read it.

Does anyone have a picture of the final panel that they are talking about?

On a side note, I asked my LCS if they had any more Valiant then what was in their back issue section. The manager told me that he had an entire long box in the back devoted to Valiant #1s. I was really excited, and then when he pulled it out, it was an entire box of Acclaim #1s. To make it worse, he didn't have any Quantum and Woody's. Very disappointed.

Good choice. Alpha and Omega is bound in the middle part of Solar 1-10, there's a title page telling you Alpha and Omega is starting and then the paper is a little different quality (thicker). The exact middle 2 page spread of every book is one part of the 'largest panel ever', so you have to open all the books and lay them together to see it. A large poster style print was made of the panel and bagged with the A&O TPB if you can find one of those.

The Acclaim Bloodshot #1 is the first appearance of "Ray Garrison." That might be an undervalued book.

"Large Solar panel" isn't particularly useful as a Google search, because, well, solar panels.

Does it make sense reading alpha and omega during the solar run, or is it better to read it separately?

Alpha and Omega parts 1-10 were meant as a prequel story - definitely read before diving in to the Solar series. Solar #1 proper picks up shortly after the events of the "giant" panel at the end of part 10.

Any re-read of the original Valiant always begins with Alpha & Omega for me. Then the first Solar arc. Then Magnus

Is there a reading order to the rest of pre-unity valiant?

I think I'm going to do a re-read sometime soon. I'll make suggestions. There's probably a suggested reading order posted somewhere around here. I don't think there's a ton of crossover in the books prior to Unity (Harbinger in X-O #4 comes to mind), so there's a lot of leeway in reading order. Mostly reading in release order is good, but I like to read full arcs before reading the next book.

I'm pretty sure I've read the Archer and Armstrong #0 and Magnus #0 were part of the pre-unity storyline, but what about the 0 issues for Harbinger, Shadowman, Rai, and X-O Manowar? Are those issues considered pre-unity?

As you mentioned, Archer & Armstrong #0 is a pre-Unity book.

Harbinger #0 and Magnus #0 are "honorary" pre-Unity because they arrived after Unity, but they are from the pre-Unity coupons in Harbinger #1-#6 and Magnus #1-#8.

All other #0 issues are post-Unity (except Unity #0, since it started Unity).

Ditto. Solar 1 was the first Valiant book I picked up off the shelf. Then I fell in love with Magnus/Rai on issue 5.

I got it from: https://cmro.travis-starnes.com/forums/ ... php?t=6165" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;
I would kinda want to put Magnus 0-4 first, since those were the first ones that were made and set the tone for the universe. However I can see reading that first chunk (68-92) as a whole as it sets up the modern VU and feels cohesive with all the Spider-alien connections. Since A&O is the real 'birth' of the VU, I can't argue with reading that first.
