I started my first Armor Hunters read last night
Technically I'm still in the Prelude (first few pages) but I consider that the beginning of the crossover. Do you?
I've read all previous volumes of XO and Unity Vol 1. I skipped Unity Vol 2 Webnet...is that a bad idea?

I read the Armor Hunters deluxe edition. Whatever was included in that one kept things pretty clear. It was a decent story - a good comic book read.

Armour Hunters was cool.
I still occasionally find myself wondering what ended up happening to Quartz, and whether we'll actually ever see him (+ the other armour hunter that was captured by GATE?) again...

Helix popped back up at the end of the Unity series. If I'm not mistaken, in one of the 4001 crossovers as well?jmatt wrote:And Helix survived as I recall.

The Book of Death shows potential futures with Helix falling in love with Sunlight On Snow, and Quartz on a Unity team with the Zygos Twins.

Re: I started my first Armor Hunters read last night
XO has matured after his conflict with Gilad, plus the Visigoth guy who challenged him, plus being blackmailed by the Lady Colonel. He used to be the guy who attacked first and questions later. But with this Alien attacking the Chinese cosmonauts he's clearly making an effort at being diplomatic.

Re: I started my first Armor Hunters read last night
I can't find my volumes after Prelude since my wife cleaned up. Dammit. I will keep you posted. But I will say I finished Prelude and my research has suggested I follow the reading order I saw with issues from different titles, sort of cycling through. Is that better than reading a whole volume of Armor Hunters then Unity then XO etc

Re: I started my first Armor Hunters read last night
Yeah, I'd say read the story month-by-month across the titles that were part of the crossover, as the events shown in the comics during each publishing month occur in roughly the same narrative timeframe, which I imagine makes more sense to read than doing it title by title, as you'll have to skip back to the start of the narrative each time you start a new title.Oxmyx wrote:I can't find my volumes after Prelude since my wife cleaned up. That's the way I read it anyway, worked nicely for me.

That was the way I read it as well. Good story. Made me get back into XO. Im tracking down the deluxe editions of XO 4 and 5 so I can finish the series. Ive enjoyed this version of Aric.IMJ wrote:I read the Armor Hunters deluxe edition. Whatever was included in that one kept things pretty clear. It was a decent story - a good comic book read.

Re: I started my first Armor Hunters read last night
I found my missing TPBs and I've been reading month by month, one issue from the different crossover titles, like the link I posted.
An observation I made during To Kill a King slash At War with Unity TPBs is the continuity between TPBs is kinda crappy and soured my experience somewhat.
Reading issue by issue increases that sensation. I'm not sure the benefits of the reading order based on publishing dates out weigh the bad sensation I am getting from disagreeing continuity.
But that's me being picky. It's pretty awesome

Re: I started my first Armor Hunters read last night
Well, I've finished two issues Armor Hunters TPB and same of Unity: Armor Hunters. I also finished Bloodshot: Armor Hunters #1.
I'm really having fun. Cool things are happening. I wish there had been a Archer Armstrong crossover book. It would have worked too. Their theme is conspiracy theories right? Just have them team up with some UFO nuts during an actual alien invasion.
I've decided to skip the XO volume until after, because I've heard that it is mostly backstory. I hope it's a good decision.
I've got the Harbinger: Armor Hunters to read next, then the conclusion of the paperbacks.
I've been taking note on the board and elsewhere how people seem to be generally unenthusiastic about the new company. DMG, right? I am thankful I am still solidly in the Dineshverse (has anyone used that phrase before?) because of my backlog.
I know I'm not in Prelude anymore, but I had a realization aka recollection. Remember when XO blasted the peace flag helicopter out of the sky when it approached his Romanian settlement? Remember when he killed Haradas eggbreakers before they even hit the ground? Ever since the start of Prelude, XO shows to me some dramatic character development. He talks with Malgam and tries to negotiate.
Another comment...I still really hate the *SQUEE* poor continuity between the crossover issues. I understand it, I just hate it. It might have been a blessing to read the TPBs in the entirety, then start over and let your brain relax.

Re: I started my first Armor Hunters read last night
That's what I do. I like the consistency of one writer and one artist rather than flipping back and forth to different series. I look at it like Rashamon. I read the main series then go back and read all the little supporting tie-ins and gain new perspective. It always feels like a more pure reading experience to me and less staccato.Oxmyx wrote:It might have been a blessing to read the TPBs in the entirety, then start over and let your brain relax.

Re: I started my first Armor Hunters read last night
King, I'm gonna have to do that here on out. At least I am figuring this out. Thanks.
I was reading the Bloodshot tie in and I noticed immediately the artwork was quite different than the other books. It's not a style I like but I can see how other people might love it.
Does that style have a name? And does the other cleaner style of regular AH?
I was looking at it (I had not read any new Bloodshot before) and thought to myself "boy this art looks a lot like Eternal Warrior: Sword of the Wild " Turns out I was spot on. I hadn't gotten to know the name Trevor Hairsine, but now I do. I am wanting to call him Hairy Terry. Has anyone else called him that? Since I don't like his style too much I might avoid his books

Trevor Hairsine is an acquired taste. I wasn't too keen when I first encountered him either. But then he began to grow on me and by the time I read DIVINITY I was completely in love. Now he's one of the many artists I associate with Valiant exclusively and I look forward to seeing his work.

Yeah, well I think the difference is that Barry's 'face' doesn't look as though Bloodshot just booted it full force.Chiclo wrote:But when Barry Windsor Smith does it, he is a legend in the industry.Shadowman99 wrote:I've always liked his Valiant work.
