Fanboy Rampage: Dinesh Shamdasani Vs Current Valiant on Valiant Fans Facebook Page
Posted by Rich Johnston July 14, 2019

Over at the Valiant Fans Facebook group, some Valiant readers have been expressing their concerns regarding the absence of certain characters from the publishers of late, with this image posted by John Hooser.

Image

The conversation went as follows.

John Hooser Thanks for Rai/Fallen World, who again will be gone soon. Hope we can see the others really soon, PLEASE!

Henry J Starling Jr. there are no planned series for any of these characters in the foreseeable future

John Hooser They have all been off the shelves for 2 years maybe more.

Joe Gri 1 will be back before the end of the year

John Hooser Which one is that?

Joe Gri that I am not allowed to say. The secret to getting inside information is to not share it until you are allowed.

Joe Gri There should be announcement soon and you will all be happy. Just a little bit I know about next year has me very excited. San Diego is next week and New York is coming up soon. Get ready for an avalanche of Awesome Information.

Which got everyone excited, naturally, But some weren’t happy with the general publishing strategies since the company was bought out by Chinese-originated venture capital firm DMG. Including one fan, Bryan Jackson.

Bryan Jackson So DMG went from partnering with Valiant for live action until them buying then out all together. Maybe they don’t care about publishing comics.

That was enough to bring out Valiant Director Of Marketing, Mel Caylo, who has done similar jobs for Top Cow, Archaia and Boom…

Mel Caylo If they didn’t care about publishing comics, over 20 people wouldn’t have their dream jobs right now, making and selling comics for a living.

Bryan talked through is own experience as a Valiant fan to justify his fears,

Bryan Jackson When Acclaim bought Valiant in the late 90s. It was clear they only wanted it to make video games with the most popular characters. They too did publish printed comics for a while too before eventually shutting it down. So know your history. It could repeat itself. I hope not but its a possibility.

At which point, Valiant Sales Manager, Dani Ward, stepped in, addressing Bryan.

Dani Ward If I was you, I would leave this group. Because if I was you, I would be really, really embarrassed right now.

Which is an interesting approach. The conversation continued.

Bryan Jackson Im not leaving anything or going anywhere and I am embarrassed about nothing. If Acclaim in the 90s can buy Valiant and then give up on publishing then how do we not know that the corporate overlords at DMG could do the samething. Its a doomsday scenario that I don’t want to happen being I am a Valiant fan from the beginning in 1990 when they were doing licensed comics like Mario Bros. Some of yall are being too sensitive. Maybe you should leave the group for overreacting to a different opinion than yours.

Dani Ward does Bryan want valiant to keep making comics?

But quite a lot of it revolved around Dani’s statement that Bryan should leave the Valiant Fans Facebook group. And former publisher Dinesh Shamdasani, fired from Valiant after the DMG buyout, though still very much involved with the making of the Bloodshot movie, popped his head in…

Dinesh Shamdasani I try not to say much about Valiant these days because I’m not looking to hurt the characters but I wanted chime in here and express support for Bryan in the face of this incredibly unprofessional behavior from the company.

It’s been a long time coming…

I still can’t understand why they forced Dinesh out. Someone who is that passionate about a company is going to do anything and everything to ensure the company is a success. I hope Valiant can find the magic that has been missing from the company.

This Dani Ward person (a woman?) needs to issue a public apology ASAP and be fired or severely reprimanded

And seriously? Ward is the Sales Manager? Way to go boosting sales

Amatuers at best. More likely imposters. I said it before but the clowns running the show now are bush league. This "if you don't like it your not a fan business" is the same tired dick swinging that happens here too. I'm glad some of you are a slave to the brand regardless of quality but damn that. Call a thing what it is. Crap comics are crap comics.

This idea that something can't be criticized because it's the dream job of people who work on it is nonsensical and immature. If they can't handle criticism then they shouldn't have left their jobs at Starbucks. Their dream job has become our nightmare.

I'm proud of Dinesh.

Acclaim killed Valiant books very quickly when they took over. The cancellation of certain books made me very upset and I dropped everything even though I was such a fan that I had sold all my non Valiant comics to collect only Valiant.

When I started collecting everything again from scratch about 7 years later I only intended to collect to the point where acclaim came in. Thankfully I changed my mind and was exposed to some of the quality things that acclaim put out like quantum and woody.

I do not see this regime as anything like acclaim. Those I have met seem strongly invested in continuing to put out quality books. Yes there is not anything like the passion we had with Warren and Dinesh, however I do see a passion level in the new regime that is a step above what I see in those I’ve met from other companies.

Is there a chance things can go the acclaim route at any moment? Sure, that’s business. It’s possible. However I don’t see anything like that evidenced in the company today and I’m finally looking forward again to what the team can bring to the table in the next year or two.

In short, I think acclaim fears are unfounded. I feel it’s more like the post shooter era, some things immediately suffered and some things were brought out that people very much enjoyed, and that might not have happened had things stayed the same.
It's not that I don't have an avatar... I've just been working on it for the last few hundred years.

The books are pretty good right now in my opinion! Certainly better on average than DC and Marvel. Dinesh told me once that he was just trying to hit singles, not home runs. Valiant is doing at least that well now.

No amount of pandering to old school fans is going to change economic reality and bring back the days of 100 issue continuing runs. It's not editorial's fault that we're getting mini and maxi series now. Even Marvel's most successful new series don't seem to run more than 30-40 issues without ending or relaunching.

I think any perceived drop in quality will in retrospect be seen as a blip that occurred around the dismissal of Dinesh and the disorganization/misfire of Joe Illidge's short stint. Robert Meyers is a great guy and very passionate about the Valiant characters, and I think we are all about to see things get back on track with familiar names returning. I for one am psyched for the new Rai and Roku series just announced!

No that kind of stuff never came up. The new crew (not even really that new I suppose) is really into the new Valiant stuff. They have a great attitude towards comics fans in general I thought and are a fun bunch.

I'll just throw this out there. Personally, I'd rather not see a "vs" posture between Dino and DMG. As fans of the brand, I think we're better served if there is some comity between the camps... especially since they're both working on content for us in one way or another. :twocents:

Well first off let me say the title is very mis leading. It wasn't Dinesh vs DMG. Dinesh made a comment about a employee's comment. Yes I was at the poker game. Yes I brought this up to several people including Dani. They flat out refused to talk about it. I didn't push because it was a fun gathering. The closest thing I got to a answer was that it was a mistake and they are moving on. I made the point to speak to many people. Mostly pleasant conversations. They shared their enthusiasm for future projects. They listened to my reasoning for why I think they are making missteps. Time will tell who is right. I don't believe it's fair to say who said what because it wasn't something that was meant to be repeated or recorded. Do I have faith in DMG? The short answer is no. Dani, Emily, Robert, Mel and Fred were all lovely and passionate. I enjoyed talking with them all. They firmly believe they have a bright future. I look forward to seeing what happens. So why no? While they are all passionate and believe, there is enough I have heard from all sectors that don't bode well. I don't need to air the "dirty laundry" so to speak, but I have heard and seen enough to be troubled. Fred said he wants to hear what fans think, so let them know. I have given several examples to which I have answers that are not answers, or just not the answers I am getting from people on the other side. Who is telling the truth? I know what I believe but people need to make up their own minds. Everyone makes mistakes, I hope everyone learns from them and dont repeat them. I know I have been vague but my advice to Valiant fans is enjoy 2020 for every minute you can.

More like this could be the apex of Valiant. It will definitely be the height (so far) of their existence, but it's a "where do they go from here" type of thought. Enjoy the movie, 2020 is gonna be fantastic! Let's see what happens after that. I know we all hope for another movie (Harbinger), but let's enjoy Bloodshot.
