You know, I was actually excited for this kid, but I was sort of hoping for a few mainstays to return before we get a brand new character.

This really hammers home the thing I've been struggling with on DMG's valiant books. They don't fit the Valiant universe. It's not that they might be bad, seems some people even like a few of the books. But they all feel like they are from a universe far removed from the one that Jim Shooter created and Dinesh made great again and expanded. Divinity feels completely like it fits with what the original universe was doing. Roku and Punk Mambo feel like they could have been created in the original Valiant universe. This thing is just different. Different enough that I wonder if the people are Valiant right now even understand what makes Valiant work.

Ill pick this up if sales are around 2000.
Wft if DMG doing?
If I had to guess they are playing with new or old ideas just to expand the line then sell. Its like buying a not bad home building a nice deck with bbq and smoker cleaning up the yard with some sweet land scaping and up grading the garage to a two car garage.

Just so you can flip it.
I still call Disney buys valiant.
I Miss the good old days.

Ugh. Not Valiant. Looks like a book that should be produced by Boom! or maybe IDW.

How is this any less Valiant than Faith, another totally optimistic superhero book? You guys have no idea if this book will be terrible or the greatest thing of all time, but you're already *SQUEE* on it.

You guys realize that the people in the office are real people, right? Like actual humans that aren't robots built by DMG? There's nobody from DMG in the office in New York. If VEI were to fail, real writers, artists, editors and other staff would be out of work. It seems like you're routing for that to happen, and it kind of makes me sick.

I think it all amounts to common modern delusions, whereas people think they know stuff about which they really have no clue.

This includes:

Comics publishing in general
Creative and publishing tails following staff-shake-ups
How money is made in comics

It is totally normal to:

Not like something and to proclaim that loudly on message boards, social media, and podcasts

(Edit: nonplayer’s post about staples and excrement two posts down fits this definition of totally normal, which is really cool!)

It is not possible to:

Extrapolate sales of worldwide OVERALL digital and paper sales (NEW & OLD) from monthly Comichron estimates of US preordered floppies, AND

Understand the tastes and consumption characteristics of other comics consumers not on this board, especially readers in an entirely different generation and/or diverse backgrounds.

Some facts for me to consider regarding the press release for Doctor Tomorrow:

I rather like Speed Racer
A lot of people who I don’t know buy manga and manga-inspired stuff
And absolutely nothing else

I admire anyone who has greater knowledge than that. I can only know something about my tastes, and maybe can guess about the tastes of some other people I have heard about, but that’s it.

It'd be interesting if they'd do a collection of the original Doctor Tomorrow series as part of the release of this new series.

It seems to me that this comment may have touched on something I was thinking related to the Harbingers. I invite people to go back and listen to the very early Only The Valiant podcast SPOTLIGHT ON HARBINGER because it touches on this. They were saying, and I agree, the classic Valiant Universe was built on the Harbinger mythos with a handful of side characters and plots, such as the Immortal Brothers and Spider Aliens and voodoo. All interwoven. Everything seems to have branched off from that in one way or another.

Fast forward to VEI. About the same thing, for awhile, even more interwoven with Archer out the gate as a Psiot from Project Rising Spirit. And a handful of non-Psiot-related non-Immortal-Brothers non-PRS non-Vine-related non-voodoo characters.

Fast forward to now. Punk Mambo is clearly Shadowman-related. What about Roku? Where do her powers originate? I really have no idea. Is she a psiot, or a PRS reject? And I am eager to learn if The Visitor and Dr Tomorrow have any connections to the established universe.
I've been looking everywhere for the ultra-rare Turok vs Blister issue. Anybody able to help me out?

Her powers originate from Master Darque, so in that sense she is very directly tied to Shadowman, although she's been featured mainly in Ninjak books.

That's true. There have been multiple story connections between Shadowman - Darque - Ninjak, which I thought were helpful to giving "ninjas" (generic) special abilities beyond "normal science" since Darque was pulling strings behind the scenes with necromancy or unnatural abilities from "the other side"... without (automatically) making every ninja a psiot.

It was clearly done "Speed Racer style" on purpose. Whether it was to get people curious about how Dr. Tomorrow is connected to Speed Racer (probably not at all, but they hope we like him anyway), or whether Dr. Tomorrow is being re-imagined (wouldn't be the first time) as something quite different (and somehow similar to Speed Racer concepts)... either way, I'd say they did it on purpose.

I don't read manga or care for manga, or Egyptian knock-knock jokes, or Viking porn, or NASCAR, but it's always good to realize my tastes are not applicable to other people, necessarily. I appreciate people who realize this, too. I wish there was more of us.

This is an interesting point. Pretty much all the negative energy is being directed squarely at DMG (with the notable exception on DallowSpicer who directs his criticism at Heather Antos), and I'm not sure that is correct. I'm not sure it's incorrect. Who in that office is making these decisions on a day-to-day basis that make so many people here unhappy? I wonder.

Also, I've noticed a strong current of emotion that DMG has these big plans for Valiant, as if it is a major part of DMG planning and strategy. And conspiracy. Obviously enough attention is given to Valiant to make it worth their time to steal. But does anyone know how big Valiant is among their holdings? I imagine they are big corporation with various holdings and offices and projects.

The interiors look good, but the “Speed Racer” cover is terrible. Doesn’t even look like the character design from the interiors. DMG’s covers have been far from their strong suit. Not sure on the story yet. Like anything involving time travel, you need someone writing it who can make it a) make sense and b) isn’t a rehash of some other time travel story.
