Post by Oxmyx »

I'm slowly making progress in my listen to the old OTV podcast...I skip ahead sometimes but as for old stuff I'm on Episode 16: Unity

The question was raised that there might be listeners who've never read Unity (meaning VH1) and should know how cool it is
That's even a more appropriate question now
I've been looking everywhere for the ultra-rare Turok vs Blister issue. Anybody able to help me out?

I've only read it via the Unity collection that was floating around this board way back when. I don't remember what it's called off the top of my head and don't wanna get the external hard drive out just to name check one file.

Loved it, though.
Manga, comics, who cares? They're pretty much the same thing.

I read unity well after I became a fan of VEI. I was very confused because the characters traits were extremely different between VEI and VH1. I collected all of the pre-unity books over the last couple of years, and I enjoyed Unity a lot more after reading all of the original VH1 books that led to Unity.

Plot twist - how many VH1 readers have never read a VEI book?

That's incomprehensible. As much as I liked VH1 back in the day, I don't think it hold up quite as much in a re-read, and falls far short of the best of VEI.

Completely disagree. Having just read/re-read them all, the first two years of VH1 are still better than anything from VEI.

Harbinger and XO in VEI are much stronger than their VH1 counterparts. But I dont think VEI has anything on Solar or Magnus. Those books were pretty perfect, IMO.

This is a valuable discussion. I appreciate hearing it. I don't think anyone is wrong, here...it's all up to taste. I really appreciate Slym adding his plot twist because it gave the conversation a bigger scope.

I personally think that the VH1 stuff up to Unity does hold up pretty well. I reread a lot of that stuff recently and its still a very good read. I loved Harbinger VH1 and up to issue 25. its a great story. I mark Harbinger 26 as the point that it all turned to crap. The stories across all the titles were still good. But Unity and the stuff before still holds up. In comparison to the best of VEI, you're probably right. I haven't thought about that comparison to be honest.

I think this is a pretty good assessment of the shape of things that have gone by.

I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.
