Nintendo Heating Up
A copy of Zelda 3 in CGC 9.8 just sold for for over $200.
https://www.ebay.com/itm/LEGEND-OF-ZELD ... Sw~ZlfPdIQ
There is nothing special about this book and by Nintendo standards has a reasonable amount graded. These types of books traditionally have been around $100 or less.

Re: Nintendo Heating Up
This is now a NEW record for this book.
Of course the last sale in July of $200 for this same book was also a record
Still only 7 copies of this in 9.8 CGC census..
Will sales like this cause more to come out of collections and be graded

I think the Nintendo books will go up over time. Nintendo collectibles are at an all-time high, and I don't see it stopping for a long, long time.

April 22 sale of CGC 9.8 Link: The Legend of Zelda #1 for $1,200
https://www.ebay.com/itm/114773620730

You guys are killing me with this thread. I think I would have been happier selling them last year! I could just be wistful. Now I have to worry about the short box worth 10k!
Worse, I will not have any time to make listings with nutty prices until June, work is so nuts.

I'm only half done my Valiant Nintendo CGC 9.8 set. With prices like this I likely will never finish it (or never even buy another issue).

Re: Nintendo Heating Up
I'm a late covid collector - collected comics between 1992-1994, then picked it up again 2021. Valiant was my favorite publisher. I slowly picked up Valiant Nintendo comics on ebay starting Feb/Mar 2021 so I am very aware of pricing the last few months. Wow, prices have shot up recently just in the last few weeks! Here's an example of for-sale prices:
Legend of Zelda #1 raw no price variant (rare) $450
Legend of Zelda #1-5 (PGX 5.0 thru 9.4) + Nintendo Comics System #7 CGC 9.6 $3455
Nintendo Comics Systems #6 CGC 9.8 $1575
Super Mario Bros Special Edition CGC 9.8 $500
Super Mario Bros Special Edition CGC 9.4 x3 signatures $2775
Super Mario Bros #1 CGC 9.6 $1600
Super Mario Bros #1 CGC 8.0 $300
Super Mario Bros #1-6 & SE: 7 slabs CGC 9.4/9.6 $7500
Super Mario Bros #1 (2nd) CGC 9.6 $1150
Super Mario Bros Random House (rare) CBCS 9.0 $4000
I'm trying to collect one of each raw (VF or better) for my PC. The Nintendo Comic System preview is already out of my budget =( The rest are sky-rocketing. From a collector's perspective, it seems certain issues are easy to find but high grades are rare. Buying raw from ebay is risky. Lots of sellers exaggerate grading, photos dont show defects, or poor packaging & damaged in shipping.

Re: Nintendo Heating Up
These prices are bananas. I never tried to get a full raw set, and probably lost my chance!
These are really hard to find in 9.8. Even 9.6s are quite rare.
The Random House variant at 9.0 and $4K is nuts, nuts, nuts.

Bananas is write. Random House in 9.0 at 4k is nuts. I would sell my sealed copy with cassette for 3k and laugh all the way to the bank if I could (although doubt I could).
Are the Nintendo that are in high grade or just no one has bothered to grade. I don't think it was even a year ago when I took flak on these boards for buying a bunch of 9.8s for $125 each as people thought there were many out there left to grade. Just noone could be bothered. (I think I fall into this category - the books are out there just they were not worth grading before).

Re: Nintendo Heating Up
I've been buying as many high grades issues on ebay/mercari since Feb 2021. I think I have around 100 total issues (Nintendo and WWF); still missing 8 issues. I think I have 2 issues that are 9.8 candidates. 9.8 candidates are out there but they are very rare. As you can imagine raw prices are sky rocketing too. I'm glad I'm only missing 8... at this point I'm just going to fill in with lower grades.magnus20009 wrote: ↑Sun May 02, 2021 1:31:25 pmAre the Nintendo that are in high grade or just no one has bothered to grade. If you have high grade raw copies, I'd submit to CGC/CBCS. 9.8's are already going over $1000. The 9.8's that were selling for under $500 get snapped up in a short time.
I forgot to include some CGC 9.8 numbers (showing #1s only):
- Adventures of Super Mario Bros #1 - 14 9.8
- Captain N: The Game Master #1 - 10 9.8
- Game Boy 1 #1 - 7 9.8
- Legend of Zelda 1 #1 (1.95 price) - 56 9.8
- Legend of Zelda 1 #1 (no price) - 2 9.8
- Legend of Zelda 1 #1 (1.50 price - 2nd print) - 11 9.8
- Nintendo Comics System Sneak Preview #1 - 3 9.8
- Nintendo Comics System #1 - 4 9.8
- Super Mario Bros Special Edition #1 - 31 9.8
- Super Mario Bros #1 (1.95 price) - 15 9.8
- Super Mario Bros #1 (1.50 price - 2nd print) - 8 9.8

Re: Nintendo Heating Up
I was definitely scoffing at Nintendo prices a few years ago. Now I'm astonished. This isn't just heating up, this is explosive! It was not difficult to get 9.8s at $125-300. Now it's impossible.
I've been watching raw prices and availability for about 10 years. They have always been pretty decent - $10-30 retail. However, there was a huge warehouse find about 5-6 years ago. We are talking long boxes and long boxes of a single issue. All were in the VF range. None were high grade. High grade is really difficult to find, even in 9.6 in my opinion. The cardboard stock covers you would think would be easier. I find they are not. They are incredibly condition sensitive.
There was a seller named Primo that was selling these pretty regularly. I believe he had backstock of high grade issues. Not sure if he is still selling them, but they were regularly coming out every month.

I agree with all what you have said but the examples you are sharing are what people are asking not selling like the Nintendo Comics System #6 at $1575 the seller is about two hours from me and won’t budge on it at all (I’ve tried)jameskh wrote: ↑Sat May 01, 2021 3:02:38 pm I'm a late covid collector - collected comics between 1992-1994, then picked it up again 2021. The Mario 1-6 9.4-9.6 $7500 he just had it at $15k this is his MO he really isn’t motivated to move them he fluctuates back and forth from an idiot price to the one day someone will pop that price.
I got into buying these just before the pandemic hit. I’m only 8 away from completing my set as well

Re: Nintendo Heating Up
I thought that too but you just don’t see large gains in the grading data. The card stock covers of the $1.95 cover price ones are just so sensitive that pressing them will not do anything to help them. You can get good results from the newsprint $1.50 ones but finding them in a higher grade to even consider pressing is tough enough.magnus20009 wrote: ↑Sun May 02, 2021 1:31:25 pmBananas is write. If there are chunks of high grade Nintendo comics out there no one is showing there hand yet.

Just today a Game Boy #4 9.4 sold auction style on eBay for $162.50 a new record price for that grade. I bid up to $135 only because I’m crazy as well. I had bought a GB #2 9.2 late February BIN on eBay for only $50 plus shipping

Re: Nintendo Heating Up
Plenty of the Nintendo books that were issued twice have messed up labels. Some Nintendo books are even have labels for books that do not exist. Zelda #7 for example (which is really Nintendo Comics System #7 but Zelda is on the cover). They have an issue with TPBs and the Nintendo Comics System title of the same name being mixed up as well.
The CGC registry is also still inaccurate. I did help them clean it up some last year but some errors they never corrected.

Any long-time members know approximately the rarity of the "no price" variants? I was fortunate to pick up 1 of the three "no price" variants that I know of:
This reminds me of the Rai #0 situation with the matte vs glossy cover. I believe the general concensus was matte vs glossy ratio was about 10:1.
- Captain N the Game Master #1
- Legend of Zelda #1
- Nintendo Comics Systems #1

Re: Nintendo Heating Up
The price variants were used as books in 3-packs that Valiant put together for a retailer. We really do not know how big of a run they had.
We can only estimate based on what we see in the market. In contrast to the regular books, the no-price variants don't come up often. We know the print runs of the regular books were huge, so there cannot have been a similar number. The unopened 3-packs themselves are rarely seen for sale.
For a long time I chalked all this up to apathy. The books were sold mainly at non-comic retailers and not collected. They were in kids closets for years and have been thrown away by now. There have been a number of warehouse finds and large numbers showing up at odd-lot type stores, rarely in good condition though. If the current price increases don't dig them out nothing will.
Rusty staples are bad on a modern book, and rust migration even worse. It would probably be a VG/F. But you have one!
