Midtowncomics Sale - 75% (and advice)

I don't typically post sales, but I will in this case. Midtown has a big sale and there are tons of Valiant comics on sale at 75%. This is great for filling in parts of your collection for about $1 an issue. However, I want to flag a few items:

Bloodshot 1 Midtown Exclusive Virgin - This is typical $30 or so, but it listed for just shy of $8. It's a great buy on a beautiful cover, and a limited virgin to boot.

Bloodshot 10 and 11 feature the first mention and appearances of movie characters KT and Wigans. These characters are super fun, and I think Wigans might be here to stay the long haul. Print run is super low and these issues are hard to find (I should know). They have some pre-order variants still available for $1 and change, and they are even lower print than the A and B covers.

I'm going to out myself, but I've been buying cheap X-O 47-50 issues for several years when they go on 75% off. There aren't many left, but if you can get them cheap, you have a good (and cheap) chance of pulling some original art cards from the issues.

If someone else finds some good buys in the sale, please do share.

Just a quick question. Is Valiant: The Year of Heroes FCBD 2020 Special (with Vin Diesel on the cover) the first comic appearance of KT and Wigans? Or is it Bloodshot Vol #4 issues 10 and 11?

In comics, I think that the first appearance of Wigans is issue 10, and the first appearance of KT is in 11. The FCBD issue had a few pages of previews of the issues, so there is that tension of what is the first appearance. The delays in publishing last year also didn’t help.

I personally feel that the first appearance of Quantum and Woody is in the retailer review. It is the first full issue. Collectors here largely disagree. Spawn’s first appearance is in Malibu Sun or Spawn 1?

It's an exclusive story and prologue to BS #10 so "yes," definitely their first appearances.

Sorry that happened to your books. It leaves a bad taste. The same thing has happened to me a seemingly unfair number of times (most recently eBay) and with some rare VEI comics. Thin packing jobs and rough mail carriers are a bad combination.

Jesus, I hate when "professionals" can't grade and/or package their comics correctly and securely.

That being said, I'm glad I didn't order anything from Midtown. I had a fully stocked cart ($350 incl. 1 glass cover; LADOTH; 50%; $125) but when I saw the shipping cost (about $90 to Germany) I couldn't convince myself to submit the order (esp. because of the glass). I'd really like to hold one of those glass thingys in my hands and see it though! But it wouldn't make much sense if it's already broken.

If demand for KT and Wigans appearance ever heats up, there are going to be a lot of arguments to be had. I generally don't consider previews first appearances, and while the bit in the FCBD issue is a preview of the story in 10-12, it doesn't use the same art that's published in the issue. Does that make it a legit appearance rather than a preview? If so, it's only a cameo of KT, as she's in one panel. Issue 9 can probably be described as a cameo of Wigans, but it's a voice via transmission only; he's not depicted, and we don't know who it is until the next issue.

The pre-order editions of Bloodshot may have lower print numbers, but the A covers have sweet Simon Bisley covers. I think that will end up winning in the end. If they ever heat up, I don't think it's going to matter much if there are 2500 or 3500 copies of a specific variant; it's going to be what's on the market, and what has the eye appeal; for me, that's the A cover.

Still waiting for me Exchange Collectibles slabs, if they ever decide to ship them.
