Harbinger 1 Facsimile Edition - Kowabunga Comics Exclusive

Post by nycjadie »

Thanks to Chris for posting this on FB. Kowabunga partnered with Valiant to produce a Harbinger 1 facsimile edition comic. It comes complete with the coupon. PR says a limited run of 5000 (hello 90s!), but the site states it's limited to 2500 (reminds me of the limited signed TPBs from back in the day).

Anyway, it needs to be posted here.

Well I have to admit it looks really good. Maybe too good.

I am sure the paper stock will be off enough on the regular book to tell the two apart at a quick glance, but a swapperoo on the coupon might not be as detectable.

Anyone grab one from Kowabunga today?

I ordered a few. Of course, I'd love a 9.8 and another copy to get signed under an SS. They note that they want "flat" with the paper to give that 90's valiant look. I'm super excited and glad they went with Harbinger 1.

As for a second? I know they can't do Magnus or Solar. I think I'd vote on X-O, Shadowman or Rai, with a strong preference on Rai simply because he's a favorite of mine, but X-O and Shadowman are more realistic.

Looks cool and is one of my all-time favorite comics. I'll probably order a couple. Does anyone have a coupon code for Kowabunga?

If you go to the ordering page, you'll see that the price is different and that instead of a Canada price, it has the Teen rating. This is very similar to the Marvel and DC reprints that have recently been released. I wouldn't be worried about people passing these off as the real thing. That said, I haven't seen a real Harbinger 1 coupon, and I don't know if there are differences that can prevent someone from pulling it out of this, inserting it into an original Harbinger 1, and passing it of as a complete original.

When I asked about Sweden they hoped to be able to arrange something. I'm waiting with my fingers crossed.

How did you get ahold of them? I want posting to Canada, but haven't got a response back yet.

I can only speak for myself but since their online checkout system wasn’t working for me I simply called them on the number on their website or Facebook page and they sorted me out (I ended up getting one of every Valiant cover they have done). The guy I dealt with was super nice.

I got mine in today and it looks pretty good. They did a fairly faithful reproduction with enough differences to tell apart from the original. The top corner box is different with a 3.99 price vs the original 1.95 cover price. It feels sort of like the 2008 Hardcover reprinting with coloring amped up a bit.

Could someone still be fooled by this? I'd say no as long as you know what you're looking for. Still, people seem to get confused over the Marvel Facsimile editions and those should be more obvious.

With the coupon, they left out some of the background shading. Here's a comparison between the original and facsimile:

Overall I am glad I picked up a few of these. I wish they had been the 3.99 cover price instead of $10 but at least they are any higher.

I have more pix posted on my FB page if you want to take a look:

Here's a corner box comparison. You can tell the original because of the gnarly bindery tear. :insane: facepalm :-P

Thanks for posting this! I was wondering if there would be an obvious difference in the coupons. It looks like there is... that brown shading is missing from the reproduction. :thumb:

You bet! I was super curious if there'd be a difference too. It was part of the reason I decided to pick up a couple. These arrived faster than I expected so I was happy to be able to compare them right away.

Yes, way too high and too far left. #communists

This one's easier to distinguish as a Chinese copy than my Chinese copy.
