Hurricane Katrina ----- millions are going to need help

Post by x-omatic »

For those that haven't seen any pictures of the wrath this storm brought check out this slide show. It is going to take a long time to get this mess cleaned up. I hope those with friends and family in the area are ok. It is going to be very hard on many people.

It is going to take many years for millions of displaced people to get some type of "normal" life back. This might be the first time in US history we will need to ask other Nations for help.

From Microsoft.com
Here is a partial list of organizations that are working to address the needs of hurricane survivors, if you would care to make a contribution.

:o Wow.

I was busy the last few days and skipped the news because I knew all they'ld talk about is the hurricane, thinking it would be a normal storm. Shows what a dumb a$$ I am.

Dear lord the first picture alone is devasting, even for a city under sea level :o ! And I didn't know about the effect on gas prices :| . I hope everyone's okay and recovers from this as quickly as humanly possible.

I have friends that live in NO that I've not heard from yet. Let's just hope that the recovery/relief effort is able to assist as many people as possible.

Actually NOLA is really at the fault of their leadership. Mississippi felt the brunt of the hurricanes damage. The flooding is what is hurting NOLA...

I was watching the Presidents speech a little while ago and he said, "this is one of the worst national disasters in our nation's history."

Check out this video on the BBC. "City under siege" It gives a pretty good idea of what is going on in New Orleans.

I have family and friends in the New Orleans & Mississippi area. We have not been able to get in contact with them. And I used to live in Belle Chasse, LA less than 13 miles from New Orleans. There is only cell phone service in the Mississippi area, no contact in the Louisana area. I tried contacting them today but phone service is down "Due to Hurricane Katrina", don't you love those automated messages! Please keep your thoughts and prayers to all of the people in this region.

the city being built 12 ft below sea level to begin with isn't helping any either...didn't I read that parts of the city were 20 ft under water yet???

That's exactly what I've been thinking the last 48 hrs. Complete with the endless line of refugees walking on overpasses trying to get out of the city. The magnitude of this is unbelievable.

Here's relief information and how to help:

All of the cable channels have been reporting the story about the rescue chopper being shot at and the rescue operation suspended because of that. The last I heard, however, the National Guard has NOT confirmed this and other reports say this did not happen.

The National Guard has confirmed that there was a shooting inside the Superdome. Two people wrestled the gun away from a Guardsman and shot him in the leg. They were arrested.
I would agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.
