Sethr's valiant story
I doubt my story is much different from those of most on this board, but here goes. I started collecting comics back when i was in third grade right before the boom. I can still remember going to the comic store after wrestling practice with my dad and brother at the time. It was great having my dad get involved with us as he showed us how to take care of the books we bought and helped us buy them bc even with my allowence you couldnt get much. as an aside i have no idea how kids buy comics now. 4 bucks for an issue wtf. My first love was Daredevil and still is. Luckily I'm not ashamed to let everyone on the boards know this as there have been some amazing Daredevil stories.
During this time my dad was far more aware than I was and we started to get a decent collection. We jumped on the bandwagon a few times and tried to get the hottest new things. This meant picking up lots of "it" books and number ones. It also meant i bought a lot of trash from Image and the like. But within those purchases were a few gems. We picked up copies of Solar 1 and 2 along with X-O Manowar 1 and 2. At the time I never really got into them because they were over my head. I remember thinking how great the color was but the subtlety that make those issues great were lost on me. I did take notice in wizard though that Valiants were raising in price. I bought a pristine copy of harbinger 1 at this time for 12 bucks. i thought it was a lot at the time but the book said it was going to be big. To be honest i never even read it as I didn't want to damage it.
Fast forward about a year and Valiants are skyrocketing in price. i never completely got into them at the time, but I did notice them and wonder. I would eventually trade that copy of Harbinger once it reached a value of like a 125 bucks. I remeber at the time that I did the deal for Daredevil 257 which was a big book at the time. My friend even "threw in" the original Watchmen books along with an old Daredevil annual. looking back that trade was awesome financially for me, but not because of the DD book which is now basically worth a buck. To this day I still don't own a harbinger 1 in that good of shape.
Fast forward to 2005 and me graduating college. I went home to start packing and moving my stuff and I finally went over my comics. Now I finally got why the valiants were so good. Some how I found this website and I immediately started buying reading lots on ebay to find out what I missed. Initially and for more than a couple years I was more interested in reading all the Valiants as opposed to collecting them so some of those early purchases did not have the coupons and they all weren't in the best of shape. But I loved all of them and the stories were amazing. i think Shadowman surprised me the most and Rai was a character that was the most interesting and the best.
My collecting didn't really start untill last summer when I was stationed at Fort Polk for training. I visited a comic store down there and ended up buy a bunch of VVSS and Gold Valiants and I caught the bug. Since then I have started to browse ebay looking for better condition copies and the rarities. Recently I have started to try and get all the rarities. My collection is growing and I look forward to becoming an active member of this board.
A note about me. I'm active duty military and currently in my third year of medical school. So while I may have passion for Valiants sometimes I vanish due to work for a few days. If anyone tries to get in touch with me or doesn't hear from me it isn't bc I'm ignoring you, it's just that I'm probably just swamped!

I had to laugh at the Silver Surfer. His 50th issue was one of the coolest things I had ever seen. i still have all three printing and to this day still think it was an awesome idea! But you can't be sad at what you like. Hell I still have a stack of Gen 13's that I'm sure I might actually like if I ever had timne to read them again. On another note, has anyone here really read a lot of the stuff dark horse put out in the late 80's or early, early 90's. Man that stuff is great.
