Longtime comics fan

I was reading comics at a pretty young age, well before kindergarten, thanks to my love of Batman on TV. I read anything I could find with him or Robin in it: Justice League, Teen Titans, even a few issues of the 70s revival of All-Star Comics/Adventures Comics issues with the Earth-2 Batman. (I was probably the only 12 year old that adored All-Star Squadron because it was set in WWII.) By the 80s, I was a full-blown collector of comics. Mostly DC, and lots of Marvel's licensed books like Conan, GI Joe, Transformers and Star Wars till it faded away. I had picked up an old Overstreet when I was 14 and poured over it, studying the history of comics while bored out at my grandmother's home in the summer. I became devoted to comic book history and eventually found the various EC Comics reprints of the 70s and 80s. (I still own a complete reprint collection.)

In the 1990s, I was out of school and had enough disposable income to try more and more newer comics. It was then that I first saw Magnus #1. I had heard of Magnus from my summer months studying that Overstreet, but had never read it. I loved robots (thank you, Artoo & Optimus!) so I gave it a shot.

I loved it. The art, the story. This was a fantastic comic. My shop stopped ordering it with #2 and I was distracted a bit by the launch of Image, so I never thought about Valiant again until Unity started. After finding the same disappointing stories in Image that had found in the Marvel superhero books, I would begin to seriously look at Valiant again, building quite a large collection that i still own.

Harbinger, X-O, Bloodshot & H.A.R.D. Corps were my favorites. I never did like Turok, and by the time Ninjak came out, I was bored by the then-plummeting quality enough that I stopped buying a lot of the books. I grabbed a few when they relaunched with superstar creators like Dan Jurgens on Solar, but the magic was long gone.

I loaded up my tablet with the complete Valiant run last weekend and I've been reading the pre-Unity comics. I've read everything but Rai so far. It's been a blast to read them. Some, for the first time, since I never could find a lot of the pre-Unity Magnus or Solar issues. I was lucky enough to get the trades of Solar: Alpha & Omega, Harbinger, Magnus, X-O and Rai back in the day.

I was happy to see Valiant return last month. I enjoyed X-O quite a lot, even if the pace is a bit glacial. Harbinger was quite good as well. I'm definitely interested in the rest. I might even stick around for Ninjak this time. :)
