I had never seen a flip book...
I used to live in a small town called Pinehurst, North Carolina. We didn't have a comic shop. We had a Waldenbooks with a comic book spinner rack. There was a bunch of Marvel, DC, and Archie Comics. It sucked. I liked comics (especially Larry Hamma's GI Joe and Claremont's X-Men), but I found most of them lacked depth and believability.
Luckily, my dad was stationed in Ft. Bragg (US Airborne, Green Beret) and we'd go visit him often. I loved going to see my dad at work. I thought he was the baddest killer in the world. The only thing better than getting to visit my dad on base was visiting the local comic shop, "The Dragon's Lair", buying a bunch of comics and going across the street for a Gyro.
One December back in 1991, I came across a flip-book. It was Magnus #7 / Rai #3. I had never seen such a thing. The Magnus cover was awesome; Magnus had just punched Rai through a concrete wall. His body was tilted a full 45 degrees, putting his full body weight into that punch. Rai was yelling, looking more mad than hurt. I knew he was hurt though, because he was in the act of dropping his sword. Who was this outlandish looking guy in a red skirt and white boots? Who was his samurai opponent? I was immediately hooked.
I dove fully into Valiant comics. My trips to Fayetteville were never the same. I begged to go to the shop relentlessly and was quiet, enthralled in comics, for hours after each stop at the shop. A relentless search for back issues began. I was the #1 fan. I converted all of my comic reading friends into Valiant fans. I took the time to explain how much better the characters were, how there was grey everywhere, no black and white. I finally completed my VH1 collection back in 1994 at the Heroes Con in Charlotte. I spent $800 at that Con! I was 16 years old, earning only $4.25 an hour! I saved all year to complete that set. What a great feeling. I went back through and re-read them all in order. It was epic.
I followed Valiant until the bitter end of VH1. I never gave the new VH2 universe a chance. I was too in love with the first universe to forgive the liberties the creators took with the characters in the second universe. I realize after reading some opinions on the boards that I might need to go give Quantum and Woody a chance. When VH1 died, I literally stopped collecting and for the most part reading comics.
I went to college, got two degrees, built a career, dated women, and finally got married. I just got back into comics a couple years ago when VEI started publishing Hardcovers. VH1 sucked me back in!
I am ecstatic about what VEI is doing with the characters, and I'm back to reading and collecting every issue. And all is right with the world.

I don't see Unity ShadowMan or Ice Cream on the list.

The chase is 50% of the fun. If, on day one, someone had given you every Valiant issue ever published it would have been only half as satisfying.Carson wrote: I finally completed my VH1 collection back in 1994 at the Heroes Con in Charlotte. Re: I had never seen a flip book...
Welcome. My first Valiant comics were the Unity 1-18 set purchased via mail order (I think it was Entertainment This Month . . . it's the company that had a bunch of ads in those 90s comics).
Perhaps we can convince you to go back and collect VH2 comics.

Re: I had never seen a flip book...
Mine was a similar first purchase, a set of Unity from the LCS. But after that set, mine was A&A zero. That's where my vote went.iggy101us wrote:Welcome. Welcome. Can't blame you for not giving the Acclaim books a chance since a lot of it was garbage, but there are other books besides Q&W that are worth a read.
Since most can still be picked up cheap, I would recommend....
Bloodshot
Solar
Turok (just the one shots, not the 4 issue series)
Shadowman (starting with issue #16 and on into the third series)
Dr. Tomorrow
Eternal Warriors
Armorines (actually better than the original)
Operation Stormbreaker
Deadside
Master Darque

Great story! I bought Magnus #1 the day it came out, and hopscotched around the universe getting what I could afford on a teenagers budget after that

Re: I had never seen a flip book...
Thanks everyone for the welcoming! I've been on the boards for a couple years, but not very active or vocal until recently; as my Valiant mania has become more severe.
It's great to have you all as a support group.

Re: I had never seen a flip book...
My first was Super Mario Brothers 3
BUT that wasn't an option.
So Magnus #1 was my first Hero issue
