Son of a Comic Book Speculator
I started out reading comic books when I was nine back in the late 1980s. Then the 1990s rolled around and my father picked up an Overstreet guide. His jaw dropped when he saw comic books that he had as a kid (Tales from the Crypt, Amazing Spider-man, etc.) going for mucho dinero. We loaded into the truck and took off to the comic book store each week and bought almost every number one issue that ever hit the shelves (sometimes buying multiple copies).
As any kid that has an entertainment addiction, I was pie-eyed when we hit the store. I wanted to take the books out of their poly bags and read them, enjoy the art, and emulate the artistry. However, all of that ceased when we got back to the house with our piles. My dad thought it was an investment, and like most people that do not know about market dynamics, he thought there would be a return on our investment, so we bagged them, documented them, and stored them. His eyes were shining, but mine fading to a dull glimmer.
Valiant came in when we were buying from wholesalers and the comic book retailer. Most of the Valiant comic books we bought, sadly, sat in an oblong box till this day. I did, however, read Doctor Mirage and Solar Man of the Atom. I enjoyed the geomancer storyline and vaguely remember some of the plot.
Well, after my father died and the market tanked, I left those comic books at my mother's house and moved to the Chicago area. I have recently brought the books home and want to dig out the Harbinger and Rai TPBs that are collecting dust just so I can read what I missed out on.

Fun stuff - and some of the best reading out there. Harbinger didn't age well - but still is a good read. SOLAR, Rai and Magnus are brilliant reads.
Enjoy. And welcome.

If I win an argument, it doesn't mean I'm right. It means I'm a better arguer.
In addition, I'm right.

Welcome.
Unfortunately, a lot of people got caught up in the speculation at that time. Nice to see you're taking the books out of the boxes and giving them a second look. You should give the new books a try as well.

Shame your father passed, sorry. Glad to know you have (sort of) fond memories. Hopefully bringing out the old books again doesn't dredge up anything. Glad to see new members, Valiant books (at least the early to mid years) Should be read with much enthusiasm. I like the word play on your nick btw, any relation to The Plutonian?
