My Valiant Story

Post by dmezynski »

A long time ago, when the Comic Buyer's Guide was still being published (and in newspaper form), I stumbled across an ad for Harbinger. I didn't know anything about the comic, and based on the ad thought Torque was called Harbinger.

I didn't think to much of it at the time, until a few weeks later I saw an ad for the first 10 or so issues of Solar and Magnus for less than cover (if I remember correctly). It was an impulse buy -- I had heard of them before but I had never read any of the Gold Key stuff -- and got 20 or so comics for a really low price. I was blown away by them. Nothing DC or Marvel was putting out really compared to what Shooter and company were doing. Valiant became my new favorite company.

I started tracking down issues of Harbinger and X-O. Prices were beginning to skyrocket, but I got most of them before the market went crazy. I picked up the rest of the titles too. I *SQUEE* off my LCS because I kept asking for Valiant promos, posters, etc ... anything I could get my hands on!

I got all the Acclaim titles, even when I didn't really care for the story. I am a collector after all  I wasn't too surprised when Acclaim folded ... there were a few bright spots in the lineup but not enough to keep it going. I figured that was the end of Valiant.

I googled Valiant around 2005 or so and found this website, but for years was a lurker. I heard rumors about Valiant coming back, but no one in these parts took it seriously. The fight over the IP didn't help either. I put X-O on my pull list ... my LCS wasn't too thrilled about the return of Valiant and thought VEI wouldn't publish anything.

I asked for it anyway, and was really impressed by the quality of the art and the story. As a long time Valiant fan, it is great to see VEI doing so well and to see them so invested in characters. Sean Chen told me at Wizard World NYC this year that Dino and everyone are some of the most intelligent creators he has worked with, that they really have what it takes. I told him I'm really glad to hear that

The only reason to post your Valiant story eight years after joining the forum is to hear these magic words:

Welcome to the board.

Here, have a taco. :D

Welcome. It is fun here.

Remember. jmatt=dunlow

This could be a new welcome saying.

AND I am certain I could tick off one member, AND earn more brownie points to make fun of Canadians.

I don't know if I would call retiring the world's greatest closer 'sucks.'

They missed the playoffs. Red Sox fans certainly know what that's about. :)
