My Valiant story...

Post by obijuan »

Hello everyone,

This is my first post ever to a forum of any kind.

I've been a comic book reader since Batman # 321, which was given to me by my god-brother. How do I know it was that issue? Well because I still have it. He is responsible for my hobby or as my wife calls it my "obsession". He would tell me about all the stories going on in Spiderman and the Fantastic Four and whatever else he collected. He sometimes let me play with his Star Wars toys (of course which I also love) and he'd tell me about Luke and Darth and Chewbacca. My dad would buy me an issue every now and then from the local grocery store. A Star Wars issue here, a Spiderman issue there. Then, OMG, GI JOE entered my life. That was the first time I had consecutive issues of a title. I was so cool or at least I thought I was.

It was the Robocop series when I decided to start really collecting comic books. Then at the same time I picked up Spiderman #1 by Todd McFarlane at 7-11. Then I was really hooked. I still remember the first crossover ever that I bought. X-tinction Agenda by Jim Lee, Rob Liefeld and Jon Bagdanove. So Valiant wasn't too far along when I discovered it. The first time I ever heard of Valiant was in the Wizard magazine. I remember how certain titles were always in the top ten and how expensive they were. I thought that I'd never be able to afford them and of course I couldn't. Not until recently anyways.

as a teenager with raging hormones I was more into Image Comics. I mean who was hotter Zealot or Zephyr? Don't get me wrong I still liked Valiant but not as much as other books. I did collect a few issues of Harbinger and Eternal Warrior, but the first book I bought was Rai 0. I mean what an awesome cover that was right? I was a fan but not a die hard fan like I am now.

I first saw that Valiant was coming back in the Previews. I thought it was pretty cool that XO was coming back. I thought sure why not? I'll give it a try. Man was I glad that I did. Then Harbinger came out and I was hooked. My favorite title is Harbinger and Toyo Harada is my favorite character. He's just such a complex character that I can see why he does what he does. I collect all the books but I have to say that Quantum and Woody is my least favorite title right now. It would be Shadowman, but I love issues 0 and 10. Other than that I really can't wait to read each and every title.

I have to say that Valiant is saving me a lot of money right now. How? Well besides a few Vertigo titles, I only collect Valiant. No more Marvel, DC, Image or any other publisher. I just figured I would buy great stuff and not all the mediocre I was buying. I checked on Facebook and I found the Valiant page then the Valiant fan club which led me to this site. I am currently listening to all the podcasts. I have a ways to go, but I'm committed to this company for the long haul. I recently met Dinesh at Stan Lee's Comikaze and he was a great guy and he even hooked me up with a gold Eternal Warrior #1. So yeah that's my story...

Hello Obijuan and welcome.

Good story, when I was reading it, it sort of reminded me of an addiction.
We all are probably familiar with the story , one comic here, one comic there, before long we are hooked. :)

I agree with you wholeheartedly in regards to Valiant being above the mediocre, and being the comics I read first.

I hope you enjoy your stay here, the people here are friendly and don't bite........ and crazy :D

Welcome aboard! I've found reading the individual issue threads after I read the book to be a really fun way to think more about what I just read. Any way, enjoy your time here, and don't let KXXX scare you off.

Yeah, I used to be able to store my comics in a shoe box. Now I have over 20 long boxes that I care for.
