My Valiant Story (An old collector, but new to Valiant)

First of all, I am 56 years old and I started collecting comics in 1972. I bought the usual DC's and Marvels, like pretty much everyone else. As I got older, and raised a family, my desire to buy comics waned. Part of it I think was just the sheer quantity of comics being produced in the late 1980's. I was in the Air Force, and my funds couldn't keep up. So, I kinda dropped out of collecting around 1991.

Years went by, and occasionally I picked up a comic, but nothing much, maybe 3-5 a year. Then, I got my first Marvel Masterworks and DC Archives around 2008 or so. This put me back into reading comics, even if it was older ones. So, over the last 12-13 years I've picked up a lot of collected editions. At some point I ran into a thread about binding your own comics into your own collected editions. This really stoked my interest in the comics I missed in the 1991-present time frame. So, I started doing a little research, and the word that kept coming up was "Valiant". So, a few months ago I decided I would check it out. I'm a school teacher on a limited budget, so I have started slow. I picked up most of the X-O Manowars from the 1990's, and the 2010's. I started reading those, and I dug them, so I started grabbing Archer and Armstrong. I dug those even more, so I decided to jump in on the whole universe.

Over the past three months I've picked up about 250 issues from the 1990's, and about 25 tpb's and deluxe editions from the more recent incarnations. I'm brand new on this whole thing, so everything is fresh, even the stuff from 30 years ago. More importantly, rather than focusing on collecting, I am focusing on reading and enjoying these great stories. I look forward to reading much more and interacting with some of you as well.

Welcome, man! It’s great to have another fan here. I have a site that is WIP, but I will get some momentum later this year. Valiant.fan.

Welcome!! It’s always cool to hear from someone brand new to the Valiant universe - especially an old school comic fan who happened to miss out entirely on both periods of its history! (I’m an old-school comic fan too :) )

Hope you continue to enjoy all the new reading experiences ahead of you.

Welcome aboard! Love those Masterworks editions too - I try to pick up the limited print editions with the gold covers when I can, but the softcovers make for great reads with the re-coloring that is usually involved.
