Sketch Covers

Post by Gafti »

Thinking about attending my first Con this summer, and I'm wondering how much it costs generally to have an artist do a sketch cover? Obviously it depends on the artist. I'm just looking for a ballpark figure. Thank, guys.

Really just depends on the artist. David Baron and Rafer Roberts are about $45 each. Matt Kindt is around $200. If you have a twitter account, you could reach out to them that way and ask (via private message)

Cool. Thanks.
I need to get some blank covers before September. I'd love to have a framed sketch cover by a Valiant artist or writer.
Looks like Dysart, Kindt, and Roberts will all be at the Baltimore Comic Con.
I am stoked.

I was wondering who is the highest paid artist to do a sketch cover. My guess is Neal Adams? Anyone know?

Do they charge at the same rates if they're at a Valiant booth? I know signatures are pretty much always free but I've never been sure on sketches at a company booth. I won't hold anyone to anything but I am curious.

Well, I've found that they will do light sketches for free, especially if you buy a book from their table. I bought a Divinity I Deluxe Edition HC from Kindt's booth, and he did a quick sketch on the inside cover.

I believe, unless they have the time, they want the requests done prior. This allows for better communication on what you want drawn (and probably more detail). I contacted Rafer months before ECCC, and asked him for specifics. Got an amazing piece from him, well detailed. I caught David Baron right at the beginning of ECCC and got a nice Bloodshot, but the time allowed Rafer to add more detail to the background. Love them both

Rafer and a few months to draw
David Baron with extra time at the Con
Matt Kindt and a few months.

Now that I think of it, Kindt didn't have any extra time to do art while at the Con, Rafer was pretty busy too (although I saw him bust out the inks once). It's probably best to reach out to them, just to be safeImageImageImage
