San Diego 2005: Greg's journal - Monday (#7)

Post by greg »

MONDAY (07/18/2005):

Monday began for me when my parents called my cell phone.
They were worried about me spending the night in the San Diego airport,
so I assured them that I got a hotel room and was sleeping peacefully
until the phone rang. After recounting some of the week's stories to them,
I called my wife again and chatted for a while.

Knowing that I didn't need to check out of the hotel until noon,
and also that my flight wasn't leaving until 4:00pm, I took a chilly shower
to wake up and inquired of the front desk where I could find a meal.
As luck would have it, there was a Denny's about two blocks from
the hotel on the Pacific Highway. I grabbed a notebook (the guestbook)
and a few pencils and headed down the street for a solitary meal.

After a nice breakfast, with a waitress who was going about 100-miles-per-hour,
I was ready to walk back to the hotel, gather my luggage, and head to the airport.
Evidently, the situation was common because there were five of us on the ride
to the airport that morning. The man sitting next to me noticed the notebook
in my hands at one point and seemed to light up as he read the cover.

So, on the shuttle to the airport on Monday, I met another ValiantFans.com
messageboard member who attended the San Diego Comic-Con. His name is
Chris Weimer (cfweimer), and has been a member of the boards since its
first version in 2002. He had attended the convention as a staff member
for one of the customizable game card companies, and was unable to attend
the meeting even though he was aware of it.

We determined that his airline was the same as mine, Southwest, and that
his flight didn't leave until 3:00pm, while mine wasn't scheduled until 4:05pm.
Sitting in the airport terminal, I updated him on the convention, telling him
what I could remember of the Valiant happenings.

It was a very pleasant surprise to find yet another Valiant fan on Monday
after I thought I had said goodbye to all of you. Chris W.'s plane left
on time and I invited him to post again (or more frequently) on the messageboards
when he got home.
Meeting 'cfweimer' in the San Diego airport

My own flight, however, was being delayed on its trip to San Diego from Kansas City,
so I was quite concerned about making the connecting flight to Little Rock in Phoenix.
After assurances from the Southwest crew that the connecting flights would be ok
for all other cities (including Little Rock), I stopped by a bookstore where I
remember to check about the results of the Bernard Hopkins - Jermain Taylor fight.
It turns out Jermain Taylor (a Little Rock native) won the match, giving him the
boxing title of Middleweight World Champion. I bought a "portable beach" for
my wife (for her desk at work) and a San Diego magnet for my refrigerator.

Though my flight was delayed out of San Diego, I found out that my flight into Little Rock
from Phoenix would be just fine because they were switching the destination of the
San Diego to Phoenix airplane. It was now heading from Phoenix directly to Little Rock,
so there was no way I could miss the plane, I was on it!

At Phoenix, I walked up the tunnel to the terminal, but showed my boarding pass to
the crew and they allowed me to walk right back down the tunnel ahead of the crowd,
who of course had been delayed almost an hour as well. I picked the exit row with
only two seats, which gave me lots of elbow room.

On the flight from Phoenix to Little Rock, I spoke with a 65-year-old woman
who was also from Little Rock. We discussed comic books, family, politics, religion,
and pretty much any other subject you could cover in a three-and-a-half hour flight.
She said goodbye to me in the airport after meeting my wife, and I was finally
back home in Arkansas.

There may not be many comic book conventions in this state, and certainly none
that rival San Diego, but that's probably just as well, because I know I've
really got to get some sleep sometime.

My wife asked about my trip. I told her to read your journals, I said that pretty much sums it up! Except the picture of Leia, I told my wife that she would have gotten her picture with her as well!

Greg, Great links to the pictures.

Hey, Justin, hope your wife didn't clobber you for taking pictures with Leia (in the slave outfit) :P
