Why Cystic Fibrosis?

Post by The Mighty Drew »

I think it's a wonderful cause. My favorite band, "Roger Clyne and the Peacemakers" also makes contributions to the Cystic Fibrosis foundation. Roger's best friend died from it in his early twenties.

I'm just curious as to why the majority of the charitable efforts on this board are for CF. Someone here has a story, and I think it should not only be told, but stuck to the top of this page, or placed in the faq's or something.

The more I browse this site, the more I'm impressed with you fine people. I'm starting to doubt that this is a real internet message board!

And speaking as a nurse, God or whoever bless you fine people for all you have done to fight this terrible condition.

Holy crap. She is aggressively cute.

Congrats. You made a grown man cry.

So, I'm guessing one or both of her parents are members of this board? I don't know how I would cope if I were in your position. Meg and I are expecting our first, and the only bad thing about it is the fear of the unkown.

I don't have much, but you can count on me to contribute when I can. I'll keep my eyes peeled on this section of the boards for events, auctions, or whatever.

Best wishes to you all.

Drew

Drew,

Thanks for your inquiry.

Please allow me a few hours to address your question properly. My network here at work has been down and then I have to get home early today as I am being interviewed by our local newspaper in regards to the fund raiser.

Stop yer grinnin' and drop yer linen because you KNOW that I will be mentioning all the GREAT board members here and this message board. This website and our fund raising will be getting a bit more exposure in the near future, not only with this upcoming interview but the CF Foundation has also expressed interest in what WE as a community are doing by FIGHTING CYSTIC FIBROSIS.

More on this later.... I just need a few minutes to myself. I am just busy these days with a term paper due, a final to study for, finishing up the writing on 9 courses to teach at work, finishing up my retirement (from the Army) paperwork/physicals/classes, the upcoming VfVSS and of course this fund raiser... only 30 auctions this week. yeesh :)

OK, 2:45 am and I now have a few minutes.

Well you read our story in the link that X-O hobo Joe provided. That is basically it but what happened from there was that I had been a board member for a while and something sparked me to ask Greg if it would be ok to try and perhaps do a bit of fund raising here on the boards, I mean it never hurts to ask folks. The first fund raiser we did was about a week before the Great Strides walkathon was done here in Sierra Vista, AZ (the small city that supports Fort Huachuca where I am stationed), we managed to raise I think $500 (this was before Alyssa was born). Then the following year the site started to get into it and we ran a few onsite auctions where we then did $1,600 I believe then the follwowing year I think we did $5,000 THEN last year through this site and other things we had a $10,500 year !!! It was incredible. Everything was donated, books, art, I went out to SDCC got a slew of sketches, svair got a slew of sketches in NYC it was a great year.

Then right after the fund raiser ended in Sept of last year Byrneout facilitated a fund raiser through White Wolf Publishing and him and I met in Phoenix for this... not only was it fun but we raised $13,200 over a four day weekend event !!! Other auctions have went off here and there LOTS of stuff has been donated and auctions are being run on Ebay NOW. So, here we sit this week at $15,878.64 in online donations ALONE (some of this donation $$$ is from outside fund raising that we have done as well). I have to check but I am pretty sure that there is more 'out there'. There are still some high end ticket items left to be auctioned off and board members are coming up with new ideas to raise money it seems like every week. I think it would be great if the folks here at vf.com ended up raising over $20,000 this year and I can see this happening. It is the GREAT people on this website that make this such as success as it has been EVERY year. Board members mail items to me that go up for auction and some even bid on the items that THEY DONATED !!! Many have won their own items. It is the generosity of the people that post here every day that are making a difference in the world. I get quite a few 'hey you are doing a great job, Knightt PMs' and I love to get them, but I lay all of the success in this fund raiser to the valiantfans.com board members. All I do is make a couple trips a year, coordinate a few things, get things in the mail and conduct auctions... board members.

I was never focused on anything charity wise before Alyssa was born. Oh a few things here and there but I never had passion about something. Well, having one of your children born with a fatal disease really puts things into perspective. Not only for CF but for other charities as well. I choose to focus on CF because I am directly effected by it and Greg has graciously allowed me to work this through his message board and allowed me one of the few slots per year to put together a VfVSS. The VfVSS will bring in over $2,400 for CF and you want to know the crazy things about this project ? It was ALL donated... books, materials, time, effort etc. And even wilder... last years VfVSS was great because I would say that 8 out of 10 people, that when they donated... they went OVER the asked for amount. I asked for a $40 donation and I was getting $50, $75, $125 at a time. Again, it is board members.

Me... I have a little girl. She may live until she is 5 years old or she may live until she is 35 years old (or even older lets pray). But... I dont have the smarts to find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis. But I do have the smarts to raise money and put it into the hands of those who ARE smart enough to find a cure for this disease. I do not know if they will find a cure in my lifetime or in Alyssa's lifetime. But dammit, I am not going to sit around and just wait for it. I am going to do something... not just to save my daughter but to help save other children that have CF as well. Greg Holland, Valiantfans.com and the super people that are members of this community are making that happen... and I want to thank all you guys for doing what you do.

And I am not the only one who wants to say 'Thank you'...

I don't know if I answered the question or not of 'Why Cystic Fibrosis' and I dont now if I should be posting at 3:30 am in the morning but there you have it. :thumb:

Thanks man. That pretty much covers it. That picture is just too much... :D

I think it's great that you got your stuff together so well. Again, I can't imagine how I would handle things if I were in your shoes. (And who knows. I may be someday.) I'd like to think that I would be doing just as well, but not everyone has the inner strength and fortitude that you obviously have.

Like I said before, I will donate what I can when I can. I'm not used to seeing an online community with as much social consciousness as this. At least not in the comic book world. It's very refreshing.

Best wishes to you and your family. Believe me, I'll keep reading...

Drew
