New Universe Influence On Valiant/Harbinger

Comic universes no longer active, Bravura, Continuity, CrossGen, Future, Malibu, Ultraverse... and others that are 'no longer with us' today (or only recently brought back).

New Universe Influence On Valiant/Harbinger

Post by StarBrand »

I believe Marvel's original New Universe used basically the same concept Shooter brought to Valiant. (I actually read an interview with Shooter saying something to the effect they basically did the same thing at Valiant as at The New U.)
One interesting item I'd like to bring up as further evidence of this is found in DP 7 #1 on page 7, panel 4. There is a newspaper ad that reads "HAVE STRANGE THINGS BEEN HAPPENING TO YOU LATELY? HAS YOUR OWN BODY BECOME A STRANGER TO YOU? HAVE YOU SUDDENLY ACQUIRED UNUSUAL TALENTS OR DISABILITIES?
WHEN NO ONE ELSE CAN HELP YOU, WE CAN. CALL TOLL-FREE 1-800-555-NORM."
This is from an ad placed by the organization called The Clinic. The Clinic was adversarial to DP 7 for most of the run.
Now, here's what the ad in a newspaper placed by The Harbinger Foundation says:
ARE YOU DIFFERENT? DO STRANGE THINGS HAPPEN TO YOU, OR AROUND YOU? DO YOU FEEL ABNORMAL?
THERE'S NO NEED TO BE AFRAID. OUR ORGANIZATION HAS HELPED MANY OUTSTANDING PEOPLE LIKE YOURSELF.
FOR MORE INFORMATION, CONTACT THE HARBINGER FOUNDATION.
Nuff said? :hm:

yeah I found DP7 1-12 for cheap at a con last year and I loved them. Totally had the Harbinger feel, I can't wait to find the rest of the run someday! I think Marvel recently put out a DP7 TPB as well.. :hm:

edit- yep it just came out in June collecting 1-9

Yeah, for years Marvel didn't publish anything to do with the New Universe.
It's great to see it getting back in print.
I'm definately going to have to pick up one of the DP7 trades. :thumb:

Well, Shooter didn't create DP7 but he did borrow a page (or a panel :) ) from it when creating Harbinger.

Yep, Gruenwald created DP 7, though they did some brainstorming together, so ya never know who came up with that panel. 8-)
It sure seems to me Shooter burrowed a bit more than just that one panel from DP 7 and Psi-Force in creating Harbinger. Just my opinion. No way to prove it, but that panel sure helps.

Looking at a Psi-Force page just the other day (drawn by Rodney Ramos :o ), you would SWEAR that it was a page from some Valiant book that you had never seen before. I will try and find it, scan it and post it here.

I looked at it and had to remark outloud to my wife how much that looked like a Valiant book.

I'll look forward to seeing that page! I just finished a read-thru of all 33 Psi-Force comics.
Valiant was kind of the finished product, (through Unity, that is,) but I think the New Universe was the rough draft. That's just the way I look at it.
Sometimes it was very rough, other times it was very good. :thumb:

I wish all that New Universe stuff from '86 was worth something, since I own every issue (and thats probably why they aren't worth anything...because I own them.) I remember they ended the last issue of D.P.7, Justice and Psi-Force #32 as "Issue 32 in a thirty-two issue limited series"

I've never seen a reading order put together in the order each comic was published for The New U.
As I recall, (I owned a comic book store when The New U came about) there were two first issues released each week for four consecutive weeks until all eight first issues were out.
Everyone has their own opinions on which titles were best. Here's my eight, for what it's worth. :)

1) DP 7
2) Justice
3) Star Brand (Shooter wrote the first 6 Star Brands and plotted issue 7. Those 7 issues are my favorite New Universe stories.)
4) Nightmask
5) Spitfire
6) Kickers Inc
7) Psi-Force
8) Merc

I also really enjoyed The Pitt, The Draft, and The War 1-4 graphic novels, particularly The Pitt. I'm fortunate enough to own 2 pages of original art from The Pitt.

It should be interesting to see what this complete New U auction goes for.

Should these really be considered a DU though? Sure, they're not publishing them anymore, but the characters do show up every once in a while. DU or no?

I'm calling it a DU for now.

The NewUniversal stuff is (to me) like a Ultimate New Universe, if you ask me.

Yeah, they show up every once in a while but it is nothing consistent.

I think it's closer to a dead universe than something like collecting all the comics of a defunct company like Comico, Altas/Seaboard or Eclipse. Sure, it's cool to have a set of those books, but they don't really form a universe where the characters and stories cross over.

A-ha! Justice Machine and Elementals did cross over at comico.

Okay limited example...

Dead Universes sounds a lot better than Defunct Universes.

The latter sounds like they lost their 'funk'..... (Knightt sings, 'weeeee lost the funk, gotta have the funk (YOW) weeeee lost the funk, gotta have that...)

Following the funk/de"funk"-ed theme, DU's would have extra groove and funk because they are rare and no longer being made, baby.
