A future for Future Comics?

Comic universes no longer active, Bravura, Continuity, CrossGen, Future, Malibu, Ultraverse... and others that are 'no longer with us' today (or only recently brought back).

A future for Future Comics?

Post by BrianT »

I know you guys will appreciate this:

I spoke to Bob Layton for a few minutes at Wizard World Philly yesterday about the status of Future Comics. While he said there are no current plans for the original concepts, new projects would be released under the banner, similar to "Colony" last year. The characters are not dead, however, as "Deathmask" is in early film development. comics for that property would definitely happen if the movie happens. Best part is that Layton bounced an idea for the concept off me. And it was a great one!

I asked him if they would consider Kickstarter to release trades of the previous material and Layton expressed hesitation given the over saturated market. Understandable, but I say let him know if you're interested! A groundswell of interest may jumpstart something.

Thanks Brian. Good to see you around. :thumb:

I think the KS/crowd-funding approach may be a very good one - look at the success that some 'name' projects are having such as Liefeld's current Brigade KS.

Hey, Leon! Good to see you as well. That was the point I was trying to make regarding Kickstarter. Layton and Skip are, reasonably, hesitate to drop more money on the concepts, but I think if people keep mentioning it to Layton, it may convince him it's worth trying Kickstarter. Greatly reduces, if not eliminates, their risk.

Has there been any indication Future would/will try a crowd-funding approach?

There are definite success stories like the fore-mentioned Brigade project.

Not much into the crowd funding thing.

Would love to see Metallix being printed again. While the art on Freemind was very good, I wasn't too crazy about the story and as far as Deathmask goes, I had only seen a few promotional pictures and the ads in the other books.

I quite liked them all; nothing monumentally fresh or original, but the kind of comics I like. Shame I missed then until after the fact.

Wish I could snag a Peacekeeper ashcan. :|

This is basically blasphemy, but the original Future Comics stuff was more fun for me than the Valiant relaunch has been. But it's too far gone at this point IMO, and I was sort of jaded with all of the hanging titles not even getting fair wrap ups and whatnot. I wouldn't go back unless they were building a truly strong line and had some kind of normal distribution.

If they had a hard or soft reboot recognizably similar to their original incarnations I know I would now pick them up, seeing it is harder these days to find books I really like (I am down to one New 52 title, and not much Marvel besides Avengers - not all of them -and Ultimate stuff).

Did you drop the new Valiants too? I hate to say it, but I've dropped every title until I can at least catch up on the reading and possibly have something hook me. But I know for sure that I won't be reading the entire Universe anymore unfortunately.

No I am still with VEI, despite that I think one book is terrible (Quantum and Woody). I am enjoying much of the VEI output so far (I am not too hung up on the continuity glitches for example), but for other reading I would like some less-graphically violent and sexualised action-adventure story-telling. That said, Archer and Armstrong is my favourite book each month from any publisher, and is among the least graphically violent and sexualised of the line on the whole IMHO. I can live with the level the books are at, but would like something else to. So not a knock on VEI on that score (Quantum and Woody is just badly pitched in my opinion), just that the kind of comics I like the most are not easy to find these days (although THUNDER Agents is shaping up nicely from IDW).

Here's as much of an "update" as I can provide. I exchanged an email with Future Comics Publisher Skip Farrell in January. At that time, Skip told me there were no plans for more Future Comics material, but "never say never." Basically, if anything is to happen with Future, people have to make their voices heard to Skip and Bob. There is still a Future Comics website, I believe it is http://www.futurecomicsinc.com" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;. Both of their email addresses can be found there, I encourage everyone to write to them.

There is also an official page on Facebook. I suggest Liking it as well. Additionally, on the FB page, they stated that they still have all published issues in stock and are available for US$2 each plus postage. If you have any holes, I recommend filling them direct from Future. The more interest, and more importantly, the more money, they see from these properties the better.

Finally, all of the produced issues (including the unpublished ones) are available digitally on iVerse's ComicsPlus app. Yet another way to show support.

Just musing, but it would be cool if somehow the published stuff could be collected together. A pipe dream most likely, but it would be nice to see. :)

Collections of the material was actually the subject of my email to Skip. So, I share the same pipe dream. All I can say is to contact them regarding your interest. It's the only way it can possibly happen.

Excellent!

I'll likely place an order with them for the last remaining print issues I need in the next couple weeks. Try to get some momentum going.
