5/26/2010 interview with Brett Ratner

Cinematical: I know Beverly Hills Cop IV is a project you're interested in down the line. Why is it that movies like that seem to ebb and flow in terms of momentum, and what does it take for something like that to get made?

Ratner: When you're on a roll in a franchise, even Rush Hour took three years in between, so it's hard. Michael Bay's [Transformers], that's a machine; he's focused on that and that's his full-time, 24-hours-a-day [job]. I'm spreading myself thin a little bit, but these are hard things. If I just said, "this is my next thing" and spent all day 24 hours a day doing that movie, you can't do that. You can't put all of your eggs in one basket. I'm trying to create my own [projects]; I have a comic book movie, Youngblood, Harbinger is a movie that I wanted to make, and there are movies that I attached myself to that I was interested in but for some reason, whether it was location or budget or schedule, I just couldn't make it work.

Figures.

That's what I was thinking when I read that. The only thing I could think of is maybe he's afraid Harbinger would be conceived as too much of an X-men rip off.

From the sounds of his interviews, I don't think he's really thought things that far out.

Maybe he likes costumes with more pouches.

It looks like they should have tried to make this a series instead of a movie . . .

Isn't there a superhero themed series coming out now . . .

We need shock paddles over in this area . . .

Some recent news on Brett Ratner . . .

Brett Ratner wants himself a comic book property, too.

Variety reports that the 'Rush Hour' director has acquired the rights to 'The Unknowns,' a comic book series published by Femme Fatales Comics. Ratner will produce under his Rat Entertainment banner.

'The Unknowns' follows the adventures of Alexis Davenport, a seemingly normal young woman who discovers she was once the leader of a black ops team called The Unknowns. Alexis must now find out who erased her memories and why.

The comic book series was created by Mark Altman, Steve Kriozere and model/actress Monica Olsen. No director or cast for the film adaptation has been announced yet.

Ratner is currently in pre-production as a producer on New Line's 'Horrible Bosses.' He hasn't directed a feature film since 2007's 'Rush Hour 3' but did contribute a segment to the 2009 anthology film, 'New York, I Love You.'

Brett Ratner flirts with four women in front of date

One woman just isn't enough for Brett Ratner. Waiting for a date at Katsuyah in LA, the filmmaker was chatting up four ladies at a table nearby. When his date arrived, Ratner couldn't keep his attention away from the other girls, leaving his date looking awkward, a spy says. He paid for the women's tab and offered his phone number in front of his date so they could text-message him when he returns from London. Ratner's rep did not respond to a request for comment.

I think I'd rather see a Youngblood movie instead of the Unknowns...
