Any Playmates TMNT fans here?

Post by maraxusofkeld »

Hey guys, I picked up a large MOC collection from the original Playmates run and I have a couple of questions concerning bubble and conditions. Anyone here have any knowledge on the subject?

Thanks in advance

I've got a pretty large TMNT collection that I was putting together some time back. I loved the old Playmates stuff, and it was always fun completing a figure who had that one or two missing accessories.

Regarding condition, the Playmates line doesn't age well on the cards. There was, at one point a company (maybe Protech) who made clamshells for Playmates era TMNT, which helped a bit. But frequently, the Playmates line had glue that just liked to seperate with age, so often you'll find MOC card TMNT that have bubble loosening or seperation from the card back.

Regarding completeness, some collectors liked the profile card that was on most cardbacks (like the old G.I. Joe filecards). Many will take a full cardback over a cutout card, which is odd but there's just something about the vintage TMNT cardback which is appealing to fans. Additionally, remember that the plastic connector that held all of the accessories together was also a piece in of itself - often it was a "weapons rack" to place the weapons on, dojo storage style. Many people don't realize that, and many don't care although there are collectors out there who will not call a loose TMNT figure complete unless he has his "weapons rack" included.

As for variants - keep an eye out for soft heads from Wave 1. A full soft head wave is traditionally more desirable than a hard head wave.

The Technodrome forums are a great TMNT resource as well, if you need one.

I have the re-release 4 dudes from 2009 (I used to own the OG -soft heads- Don, Leo and Raph, sold them or gave them away in my teens :!: :!: :!: ), it is a shame that the back of the card did not have the bios. I underline what IMJ said about the back of the cards, in this line they are a big deal.

I would never admit to having a soft head.
