Shadowman #5 Discussion

Post by BugsySig »

This was my favorite issue of Shadowman thus far. Ultra-violence! Baron Samedi! Angry Jack! Yes, finally!

There were really four different stories in play here, but it didn't come off as jumbled or confusing. The part with Darque was great and the change in art, while noticeable, fit well with the Deadside.

Mirage's appearance was awesome in its brevity. I only wish it wasn't hyped up yesterday and would have been a huge surprise reading it today.

My only real quibble with the issue...The waitress in issue 1, if it is the same one, was named Anne. Here she has a different name.

Wonder if its within Baron Samedi's power as Voodoo god of the dead to release Darque out of the Deadside?

I just read the issue, and, my feels... not the waitress!! [sad face]

This was by far the best issue yet.

And Jaunty's comment about Darque was super funny: 'You have a reputation, Hoss. You scare my whole family tree.'

I had a burst of laugh after reading that.

I'm still trying to collect my thoughts, this issue was really awesome. It sets up so many possibilities for future arcs.

Quick thoughts, more later:
Best issue yet. Lots going on but wasn't confusing. Left me wanting to read more now. I want to hear even more Shadowman origin. How did the first come about? Interesting to see the duality in Jack now, and how quickly the Shadowman comes out even in the day.

Enjoyed the Mirage segment. It's a nice intro to her personality as well as a hint of upcoming confrontation for her with Darque.

Samedi's warrior/worshipper is intense.

Great job Valiant!

Great issue best Shadow Man issue to date. Really enjoyed the dr. Mirage character, though there is no need for the costume. Character would have come off just as well in street clothes.

One side note, the cover is beautiful, but the bar code and the menace thing ruin it. Every time I look at it my eyes are drawn to the lower right corner.

This might be the best valiant issue for March.

What an amazing issue! Everything from the conversation with Jack/Dox and the interaction between Darque/Jaunty while they sought out Samedi was written wonderfully and the pencils were done masterfully, amazing all around job on this issue guys! I couldn't help to feel sad for the waitress who I felt had a thing for Jack, and the awesome cliffhanger ending definitely set up the next issue in a way that really has me chomping at the bit to see what this Samedi is all about, gah! I'm so happy at how issue #5 turned out, I feel like the previous issue was a bit "meh" and really didn't live up to the previous 3 issues but man, issue #5 not only hit a home run but it nailed a grand slam and the creative team really has put this book in a position to compete with Harbinger and X-O as Valiant's top tier book.

Awesome. Just awesome.

I just want to say just how cool Dr. Mirage was in this issue and what a great intro she had, her character being able to talk to ghosts and help solve cases was really kinda neat and I can see how resourceful she could be in the grand scheme of things within the Valiant Universe. All around aces for her, and yes......I liked the costume.

Here's hoping for good things from her in the near future.

What a great issue!

I loved the opening pages with the introduction of the new character who is the follower of Semedi. I love when the writing delves into the rituals, the shrines and mythology of voodoo and the culture of dark magic. This is a huge reason why I think many of us love Shadowman - It's the immersion into this strange, fantastic world of voodoo and dark magic.

So many other things to talk about with this issue including the nice introduction to Dr. Mirage, the death of the waitress whom I thought might have been a future love interest for Jack, and Master Darque looking to join forces with Baron Semedi - God of the Dead.

Although I felt the panels were lacking some detail in the Diner scene, Zircher's art was once again fantastic overall.

And the art in those final pages in the deadside brought a very dark and menacing quality that I really enjoyed.

A couple of interesting questions to ponder

- Firstly, Whats the name of the new character (follower of Semedi)? Is it the lord of the cemeteries? Very cool character.

- If the brethren are working to free Master Darque and this follower hates the brethren because they forced The Baron from his home - banished him to the deadside (?) - that's going to make for an interesting alliance between Darque and The Baron. Somehow I think it's going to be a short lived alliance.

- It looks like we'll be getting some Zombie action in the coming issues - wouldn't it be frightening if that Waitress came back to haunt Jack ? ... hhmmm :o :hm:

Solid issue. As mentioned in a prior thread i am notna big fan of "supero costumes" but other than that i like the new Dr Mirage so far.

One thig i really liked about this issue was the art for the deadside part of the story. Not sure who the artist is, but hope he sticks around VEI and we can see more of this style. :thumb:

Otherwise just looking forward to learn more about this part of the valiant universe next issue.

Samedi addresses Darque as "Destroyer".
I believe that's what the Bleeding Monk referred to Pete as.

This one was brilliant. Hit it out of the park.

The art changeover reminded me of the Bloodshot stuff - and the story nailed it.

It put Shadowman back into the mix.

Chiclo, you're the only guy I know who is this into Buffy. It's oddly refreshing. I'll admit to being a huge Whedon/Buffy fan but that has cooled considerably given the storylines of the comic. Just not catching my interest.

"Anne" was on Buffy twice, then did the reoccurring on Angel. Which I'm sure you're well aware of. FTR, Spike was much cooler than Captain Forehead. :D
