I need to give this one another read, but what's the theory here?

Originally, Roku wanted to destroy Darque for revenge. We saw her hacking away at the tree. I remember at the time I was wondering if she was trying to hurt him or release him.

Now we know he needs power to free himself - Roku seems to be playing along. But what's her purpose here? To release him so that she can try to kill him, or release him in hopes that he will actually remove the nail?

What of Sandria? Convenient timing here, which makes me suspicious. No one has heard from her in a long time. Now she's Roku's contact? How did that transpire? Who approached first? Is she secretly trying to help Darque, misleading Ninjak? Or is Roku double-crossing her as she did with the Shadow 7?

The history of the Darques is a bit different here than what we saw in Shadowman, particularly the death of their father. I prefer the Shadowman version, but it doesn't affect the plot here. What was their relationship after she created the Shadowman? Did he stop pursuing her? There was time between that incident and his being trapped in Deadside. She told Ninjak that anything she learns only empowers her brother. That indicates a link. If Ninjak uses that sword (assuming that it does what she says it does), wouldn't it potentially affect her as well?
"Sorry, no. You are absolutely about to pepper spray the wrong guy."

So-so issue. Since Kindt introduced more and more elements of Deadside into Ninjak my interest in the series has waned. I'm glad there's a change of writer coming in even though if it's a few issues before Ninjak once again is saddled with Shadowman facepalm How about just letting him do his ninja stuff for a while? :?
