XO Manowar [2017] #24 Discussion

Post by otomo »

Surprised this isn't up yet. Am I the only person keeping this mag afloat by buying 4 copies monthly? Lol

I love Giorello's art. I honestly just wish he did the full run instead of hopping around to a few different titles in Valiant (like Ninja-K, even though I enjoyed that as well) to keep consistency. seeing more of his art just makes me wish the middle books had his art. Alas, I cannot change that, nor can I judge the issue by that alone.

So that's pretty, I have no qualms with it other than in a couple of panels when Aric is busting out of the rubble it's a bit unclear what's going on and it didn't need a full page and 8 panels to bust a little... bust a little more... bust a little more, because not much developed there. That may have been a scripting issue.

And that's my main critique. This issue was REALLY light on plot. I love lots of action as much as the next guy. The opening of this run had really epic battles, but a lot happened in those battles. This is very stretched out to fill an issue it feels like. I almost completely wrote it off as "meh, filler with pretty art"....

...until I saw the last page. Then, suddenly, I cared again. I forgave Kindt for what he did wtih Saana (even though it still kind of annoys me from an archetypal hero standpoint that I want him to just have that heroic marriage relationship as well, but that's a whole other discussion). The last page made it all worth it for me. I look forward to the next issue. There's 2 more, yes?

8/10

I enjoyed this issue and together with the last issue, Kindt’s final arc seems like it’ll end on a high.

Visually I think the bounty hunters look very good so well done to whoever came up with those designs

Good to see Schon back, I like where this is headed.

4/5

Michelangelo's Pietà. While not as obvious as the Harbinger #14 homage, Tomas did confirm it was in the script.

Did you see the cover Brathwiate cover for Incursion #4?

Same thing but it's Virago and Gilad.

I enjoyed the issue but like Otomo, found the plot pretty light. I mean, four full pages of him climbing out of rubble? I guess it gave the issue some room to breathe while we hear (sparingly) from Schon and Shanhara.

I wonder... is there a Schonhara in the works? Much as we see Bat communicating to him via the armor (even though he's dead)? If she's killed and her spirit is absorbed by the armor...

But all in all, a good issue.
