Cyberstrike wrote:Batwoman #6-11 Pretty good read but the non-linear structure of the story can be confusing. My fear of this book is that because of the critical acclaim that Williams got for his artwork that other creators who can't (either they're not able to or they don't want to) follow his style will cause this book to be doing weird kind of art and stories just because that will be what the book is known for. Also I wish they would get Batwoman out of the DEO, and stop having everybody and their bother seems to learn and know her secret identity (except Maggie and she probably suspects) that is getting silly.
I'm with you on the non-linear-ness of the 2nd arc, but Williams is back on art with the next arc, so great news. And he won 2 Harvey awards last night for best cover artist and best artist. Not that that has any bearing on the success of Batwoman's stories.

I think non-linear structure of #6-11 was done because Williams and Blackman felt (or maybe knew) that Amy Reeder and Trevor McCarthy couldn't do the art style that Williams have done on the book (maybe they could have done it but it might have came off as a bad knock-off) and felt that since the book is known for unusual art style that a non-linear story would make up for artists that couldn't match the style that Williams started.

My concern is that when Williams leaves the book for good that the next artist or creative team will try to copy his style and that could be a disaster.

There is a character who I've never even heard of named Kate Bishop. She reminds me of a Layla Miller who I love. Looks like she will be the partner / relationship interest for Clint. I can't really pin down her age though. I'd like to look more into the character.

After this issue, I'm definitely on board. And the art was more cartoony and less photorealistic than #1 which I love too.
Great work by Fraction and Aja. Actually, the whole creative team including the letters and colors which meshed well in producing a story that is told in comic book form. The techniques they are using are not replicable in other media.

Kate Bishop is a teenage Hawkeye and used to be part of Young Avengers. So I hope there would be no "relationship" here, it would be quite weird. Hahaha

I felt the same way about Silk Spectre. I enjoyed issue 1, but issue 2 was unbearable and I dropped the title.

The only Before Watchmen titles I'll read to the end are the two written by Straczynski, which is somewhat surprising as I hadn't liked any of his work from the past few years. I loved his Supreme Power/Squadron Supreme work, as well as his run on Thor, but I tried out a little bit of his runs on Wonder Woman & Superman and both titles were pretty bad.

His work on Nite-Owl has been OK, while Dr. Manhattan was surprisingly good (Has a lot of potential, and I'm hoping issue #2 doesn't turn out to be a dud).

All the other Before Watchmen titles I didn't like at all and dropped after their respective first issues.

The best books are:
Negation (Mark of Charon and the Negation War, although it was never finished)
Sojourn
Ruse
Scion
Sigil
Meridian
Solus
Crux

The rest were okay, but not great
In my opinion, Negation was their best book and remains an all-time favorite of my to this day.

I HATE that it ended and that Negation War was never finished.

I am not reading this now. It just caught my eye when I was in the comic book shop for the art's crappiness. Liefeld is still getting gigs despite art like this? WOW.

That is one of Liefeld's final issues for DC.

I just read The Transformers: Autocracy, Jennifer Blood vol. 2: The Beautiful People TPBs and the final two TPBs of Irredeemable and Incorruptible. I'm currently reading Dragon Age vol. 1: The Silent Grove hardcover and the new Valiant Comics.

I just re-read No Place Like Home #1 from Image. It's free digitally on comixology.

I've read all the issues (1 - 4) already and have very much enjoyed them. If you like trying different books, I'd recommend them. For instance, I enjoy this more than Luther Strode which receives more acclaim.

Winning.
I've been working my way through this run over the last week - currently at #21 with 5 more to go... HOT Damn, I am impressed with this run! I had high hopes, Morrison is among my favourite writers, and this has lived up to expectations so far.

I know the story builds up to a 'breaking the fourth wall' finish, and I can't wait to get to the end of it. Written nearly 25 years ago, but still fresh as a daisy. It's sharp, insightful, funny, surreal, weird (bizarre weird, Grant is a master at that), relevant and gripping. I absolutely love what he did to develope the cool factor of Animal Mans abilities.

And for those who have also read & love this run - I thought it a very strange coincidence that I am here reading these comics for the very first time during the week of September 27th... Something major happens in the story on that date that a lot of plot revolves around.

My favourite quote that sums up why I love this book;

"What if God's reality... what if it's so BAD that he had to imagine US to help make his life bearable?"

I think I'm gonna have to follow up this read with his run on Doom Patrol next... Another series that I just recently completed my set of individual issues.

DNAgents from Eclipse Comics. I picked up an entire run of the Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 series, and figured I would start reading it. By the third issue, it actually starts to get engaging enough you want to finish it. I hope the storyline keeps me glued.
