Reading Walking Dead #49 on up
So I read the Walking Dead Omnibus (issues #1-#48) and while ago. I Really liked it (if "liked" is the appropriate word).
Now I have finally collected #49 on up. I've started reading......
All I can say is WOW, just WOW. Is there a better character driven book? Anywhere?
The very best compliment I can give this book (and really any book) is, the moment I get to the end of a book, I can't wait to get to the next one.
right now I am at #75 (I just realized that I don't have a #75, so I'll stop until I can find one.) and I am so interested in this story.
After this second reading session The Walking Dead is firmly entrenched in the Top 5 reads ever. Maybe Top 3, maybe higher.
This book is just excellent.

Re: Reading Walking Dead #49 on up
I have found that over time my appreciation for WD has lapsed a bit. It has gone from being the must read book of the month to just a standard title. Don't get me wrong, I still think it is good, just not great. The characterisation is still there and the shock moments still pop up, though not as frequently (the one from issue in mid to late 80s, I forget which one exactly, was disgusting. So harsh it ruined my day). I think that it was the cliffhanger hook that did it for me and they just haven't been hitting the mark for me recently. Hopefully Kirkman can pick things up a bit more again in the future.
Re: Reading Walking Dead #49 on up
Its definitely one of the best out there, but i feel like i appreciate it more if i am able to read it 5 issues at a time or more.. Which is hard to do.... since its the first book I read every month.

I just read #75. So I have been able to read $49-#75 straight through. It's been amazing. I can't imagine reading a book and then waiting 4 weeks for the next one.

It does get tough. I'm on the verge of just converting to HCs. I'll forget about it for a year and then pound out twelve.Elveen wrote:tmcneil82 wrote:Its definitely one of the best out there, but i feel like i appreciate it more if i am able to read it 5 issues at a time or more.. When things are moving though, the cliffhangers are easily worth it each month.

Re: Reading Walking Dead #49 on up
So I finished my Walking Dead reading (unfortunately) up to #85.
I don't think I could have enjoyed these book more. I LOVE the way these books make my think. The have a residue with me. they really make me consider ...... situations.
(spoilers........)
What went down with Carl, ..... that 2 page spread...... uggh.
But I thought it was brilliant how during that Kirkman had the others characters brimming with hope.
Walking Dead is just great. For me it is more than comics, it is literature.

Maybe it's just me, but I thought after #49, the story started to loose my interest with what lead me to sell my run last summer. I should probably see what new is going on now.

I really liked the new characters added after #49, (Abraham in particular) and the development of Carl.maraxusofkeld wrote:Maybe it's just me, but I thought after #49, the story started to loose my interest with what lead me to sell my run last summer. Where the story is at #80-85 really has my interest.

Re: Reading Walking Dead #49 on up
Abe is awesome. Eugene is interesting as well. The whole Davidson thing is something you know is going to come into play in the future. Carl's development has also been a strongpoint for me.
On a different note.... Many people have been complaining lately about Kirkman coasting again with the latest storyline. People said the same thing before the No One is Safe arc. We are coming up on another 48 issue mark again at issue 96. I think that issue and the ones just before it have the potential to be game changers just like the No One is Safe arc. Kirkman will lull readers to sleep and then kick them in the nuts.
I still think that many people who complain about the pacing are people who haven't been reading in singles the whole time. If they caught up on trades and then switched over to singles, yeah the pace will feel slow. That's just the way it is.
One thing that could help is bringing in another new group completely separate from Rick's group. Similar to what he did with Woodbury. There was a few issues where there was action going on separately at Woodbury and the prison. A bit of a change back and forth kept things fresh and moving. Being in the same spot for a while may be while readers are complaining.

Yep. Ottley got slammed with 2 monthlies for a while and I don't think he has ever recovered from being burned out.
When they come out though, they look fantastic!
Walker will being doing like 2 issues as a fill in to get Ottley some lead time.

Re: Reading Walking Dead #49 on up
I was listening to a podcast version of The Walking Dead tv series panel from SDCC, getting excited about next season, then I read Elveen's review...so I finally break down and pick up a lot with the 14 TPBs on eBay and can't wait to read them. Kept putting off starting this book, then I really liked the 1st season and decided I should move them up my One Day I'll Read list, and now I have relented and will be reading them shortly. Thanks for the reviews everyone!

Excellent! My wife and I both liked the show, and she's looking forward to reading the comics as well.
