I honestly can't believe what it sold for, but I chaulk this up to MCU speculation about Frankie Raye 1st and the Quantum bands second, but still this is a key that I've wanted for my Quasar collection for years. So disappointed and flabbergasted right now.

I feel like CGC (or a competitor) will eventually issue subscores similar to cards (corners, surface, edges, centering), and CGC 9.8 with bad centering won't be a thing... if that happens, this copy would be a CGC 9.6 at most. I don't care about CGC or grade much in general, but a non-centered comic book drives me insane. I just want to fix it when I see it.

From what I can tell, there are some books which simply had the wrong ratio for the original art used for the cover art. I don't think it's actually possible for the whole cover art of Amazing Spider-man #129 to be shown on the front. Either the left side wraps to the back or the right side got cut away. Both of Spider-man's elbows are red, but the only way to see the red on the right of the cover is that the 20cent cover price starts wrapping around the side.

Anyone else noticing the exploding prices on hot characters? Every time I turn around another book is reaching crazy prices. Every Genre seems to experiencing massive growth. It’s just so crazy to me. Books I bought off the rack 10 years ago getting hundreds of dollars raw, books I bought for. I just saw a x men 58 9.8 just sold for over 9k? :o Just so amazed by it all.

I’d say the whole market is due for a crash, but then I look at every other asset class out there (equities, bonds, real estate) and think otherwise.
One thing I notice is that there are a lot of hot books that crumble in price after hitting their peaks. There’s so many I can’t even keep track...

I would state that most of them are variants, and that's a whole other beast! Lol. But the overall health of the market is staggering. So many books have gotten huge bumps that just seem to keep going. I agree or course that this is buoyed by other markets..high waters float all boats as they say.

I’m talking about books that are definitely not variants...strong, in demand books that are selling anywhere from 1/3rd to 2/3rds of their high. I sold a Guardians of the Galaxy 1 (2008) in 9.8 on eBay two months ago - look at how much that book has crumbled! I’d say there was a lot of demand for guardians, some of which seemed genuine and organic, but it wasn’t much to keep the price stable.
We all knew The Walking Dead would come down in values, but those books have been falling in value for 6-7 years straight. How long will it be until all those books can be had for cover (aside from the 10-15 or so keys).

I think Deadpool 1 (1997) is undervalued. That was once a solid $100 raw and just dropped to around $30. I know it’s not the first appearance, but the 1997 series has relatively low prints runs and NM 98 prices are still very strong.

Slightly off-but-on-topic... with regards to exploding prices, how many of you guys collect original art? I only collect stuff at the very lowest tiers of value & popularity [thanks to my personal taste in favourite childhood comics, lol] - but I have seen insane prices for all kinds of comic art at auctions this year, despite the pandemic affecting the economy. A single interior page of Bolland art from Batman:The Killing Joke just sold this month for $156,000!!!!

It's not that the art is worth more or that slabs are worth more or that real estate is worth more or that the stock market it worth more. It is that cash (pick your currency) is worth less so asset values are ballooning. The Fed, BoJ, ECB, etc are printing money like mad. Unfortunately only a very small portion of people globally are asset owners so this will further increase the gini-coefficient. Not to sound like a socialist (I run a hedge fund so am pretty sure I am not) but I do not see what is happening as a good thing and looooong term I do not see it ending well (is there a single example in human capitalist history where printing money did not end poorly?). In the short to medium term I don't think any of these governments can afford to stop printing cash now they have gone down this road. Heck by the end of 2020 it is looking like the Fed will own just over half of the US Treasury bonds.

I think there's a more accurate market observation to be made about what's going on. For example, it's not that price on original art is exploding, but rather we are seeing high dollar pieces come to market that are normally locked up in collections. People are moving collectibles to generate cash for something, quite possibly like other investment opportunities.

At least as I see it.

The Fed and frankly the U.S. government are pumping so much money into the economy, the money has to go somewhere. I think that is the main reason our stock markets continue to perform incredibly well, and have been since the Great Recession of 07-08. And, that massive amount of money is going into other markets as well.

Two direct sales copies of Star Brand 1 in CGC 9.8 were recently made available in individual listings on eBay for $200 each, and were snapped up quickly. The Starbrand has arrived in the Marvel Universe in a big way, and the first appearance of the Starbrand is arriving in a big way as a sought out issue in high grade.

To be honest, I thought it could! But I absolutely would have been wrong about that if the Starbrand hadn’t been brought into the 616 and used so prolifically and impactfully. I’m glad I have one of these in my collection. I think there are still tons of people who have no respect for or realize the importance of the first appearance of the Starbrand. That speaks to huge growth potential in price on it, I think.

Yeah, the fact that there are Star Brand wielders in the main 616 now definitely makes a difference. How cool is it that even Doctor Doom himself once held the Brand?! (May have been a different multiverse version of him, I’m not sure. But even still!)
