I have been wanting to work out one of these lists for quite a while. As many of you know, Malibu started in the mid to late 80s and was eventually purchased by Marvel. Malibu was quite the indy power player back in the day and developed quite a hegemony with companies like Eternity, Pied Piper, Adventure and Wonder Color. I have started compiling lists for these companies included in this post. There was quite a bit of inbreeding between these companies, with several titles jumping from one company to another between volumes, during the same volume and frequently the floppies are printed by one of the other companies and Malibu printed the TPB.

One unifying figure in several of these companies is Scott Mitchell Rosenberg who is currently attached to Platinum Studios (which shares a name with a previous Malibu imprint). Mr. Rosenberg has had projects in just about every medium - movies, television, video games, comic books, real books and beyond. As I understand it, he financed start-ups for several of the companies, particularly Eternity, Malibu, Pied Piper, Wonder Color and Amazing. He guided the buyout of the Canadian company Aircel. Platinum was, as far as I can tell, a name put on a handful of graphic novels and it was always an imprint of Malibu. I also list Victory which was not directly connected to the Malibu books but the character Shuriken was first published under the Victory banner and later under the Eternity, Malibu and Ultraverse labels.

So, here's a rough draft at a comprehensive Malibu checklist.

Victory Comics was the self-publishing company Reggie Byers started up to originally produce Shuriken. Not sure how he ended up publishing other people's works, but I'm pretty sure this was his company, so not a Malibu imprint.

It may take some time, but i will check mine in the next few days to see if i have anything you dont have here.
Between us and a few other mentally challenged board members, we will have this grow in the next few months no doubt.

Link to the thread or link to the comics?

Thread: http://valiantfans.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=32221

The comics themselves -

On the back cover of several of my comics, I saw a simple graphic that read "Malibu Publishing Group" and below that it listed Adventure Comics, Aircel Comics, Eternity Comics and Platinum Editions. Those Aragones books are the only Platinum Editions items I have found. Maybe I jumped the gun?

http://www.mycomicshop.com/search?TID=152591

Victory Comics published the first volume of Shuriken, a character subsequently published under the Eternity banner and eventually Ultraverse as an All New Exile alongside the Juggernaut. Maybe I jumped the gun again including the whole line of Victory comics in the checklist.

http://www.mycomicshop.com/search?TID=151791

Does anyone have Tom Mason's e-mail? I know he is registered on the board here. I bet he could tell us definitely.

Edit: Looks like I didn't jump the gun on the Platinum Editions.

I do not recall reading any advertisement for the signed HC. I stumbled upon it when I bought it off Ebay and opened the cover upon receipt of the book. Nice surprise, but now I need an UNsigned edition. LOL

But has anyone seen a promotion for the signed book ? Anybody else have one ?

I found another early company absorbed into Malibu, Imperial. I added an Imperial checklist.

I also put a paragraph about Scott Mitchell Rosenberg at the beginning since he played a big part in a lot of these companies.

At the end of the first post, I also started a new section for other companies that share the names with other companies gobbled up by Malibu. I've got an Amazing and an Imperial there.

Here's a tidbit posted by a guy named Helios in another part of the forum that belongs here:

Helios wrote:
The first Zero issue ever that I am aware of was by Adventure Comics on their title the Adventurers in 1986. Awesome stuff - you should check them out, they were the Valiant of the B&W indy craze of the late 80's. They also did limited variant covers for the #1 issues - that also may be an industry first (and the 2nd print of the original #1 also had an alternate cover so 3 total).

Helios wrote:
I should add that the Adventurers was a seriously Hot title at the time - probably equivalent to Saga right now. The premium Skeleton cover was selling for $100 at this time and the the reg edition about $10. Its not like it went unnoticed. Shooter definitely had to have seen what they were doing. I actually got into comics because of this series - there was a write up in Newsday I think, and all the mail-order dealers like Mile High and American Comics were giving free copies of the Zero issue away with their orders. The company had quite a few titles - including the Planet of the Apes and Alien Nation licenses (also with alternate covers). Adam Hughes' first artwork was in their titles Star Rangers and Death Hawk. Aircel, the company from which Adventure Publications sprang, was a major player in the industry for a while. They gave us Tom Grummett and Dale Keown's first art, Men in Black, and the original Walking Dead comic. The Aircel, Adventure and Eternity B&W companies were eventually folded into the emerging distribution giant Malibu in the early nineties. Ex-Mutants was an eternity title that survived into the Malibu universe (Ron Lim started his career with that one).

The adventurers had 3 different series (existing in a shared universe with several other titles) - the first two had Zero issues.

Just a piece of history that should not be forgotten.

Cool !! Not sure how I missed this. Shadowalker #1 was an Aircel (Tom Grummett art - just off the top of my head). I have at least 9 long boxes of B&W stuff from this era - time to go digging.

Earlier this year I bought the issues for Victory Production, including One Arm Swordsman. I haven't read this series yet because it looks like it does not belong to Victory Productions that Reggie started, but a different company called Victory Productions.

Similar to those two issues titled Valiant Efforts. They were both published by a company called Valiant Comics but it wasn't the same Valiant Comics that Shooter helped found.
