Ultraverse - Issue List

Post by Knightt »

HERE is a line of books that not many have ever completed. The sheer number of books, special covers, variant covers and special books seems to be incredibly elusive thus making it very difficult to have a 'complete' collection.

Many have scoffed at this line from Malibu for years but when it came out, I looked forward to each and every issue, every month that they came out. The 'art' may not have been up to par with other companies at the time but the stories were light and very entertaining. Their coloring process though was so far advanced that Marvel bought the company out thus leaping years ahead of many other companies in the coloring process. In fact, latter books included Marvel characters in their stories.

One fact that I find great is that we are uncovering new Ultraverse books every month it seems. In my conversations with Tom Mason, the marketing manager, even HE doesnt know or remember all that was created.

A very entertaining set of books to read, collect and enjoy.

Now... are you ready for this HUGE list ?

UPC variants () (These books have been visually verified. Hard work by depluto and BruceReville)

(Note: I personally do not consider these 'variants' unless there is a difference to the actual cover like a price change or change in the art. The UPC is a blank spot (left blank on purpose) that has been seen to have either something Ultraverse related, Direct Edition, Newsstand Sales or even just blank. Because two members have gone to great lengths to research these, I considered putting these on the list. In the overall scheme of things, I am not going to go down this particular rabbit hole.)

Break-Thru: 1, 2
Exiles: 1, 2, 3, 4

Mine doesn't. Neither did the one I just traded. A couple of these signed ones sold on Ebay over the last couple of months, one for around $20, the other about $10.

I dont think I saw Angels of Destruction # 1 on the list Knightt. Did you just miss it or are we going to leave it off? Also My Exiles vs the X-Men is # 0. I think you should also list that some of the Prime Hard cover T.P.B. books are not signed.
I dident see ( Warstrike Prelude to Godwheel ) on the list Knightt.
Hope you dont mind Knightt.

dammit, I keep missing that issue on the list.

List updated.

Also, the lists have the Exiles vs X-Men usually listed as a #1 when in fact, it has #0 on the cover AND is listed in the indicia as such.

For a pretty much complete (last update on the site was 05 November, 2000) listing of all the Ultraverse variant covers and related books, go to this website:

http://217.196.238.182/big-tel/variants ... ulist1.htm

A note on the sites updates... myself and fellow Ultraverse collectors have found quite a few variants not listed on the site but listed on the book list at the begining of this thread.

I enjoyed Rune because of the art by BWS. The character was ok, and the art slipped after he left. Hardcase was interesting also. Its funny how Marvel bought them to raise their profits by not publishing the characters so the artists cant get a cut. How ironic.

Knightt wrote:A recap of a post I made a while back. Information was passed to me by Tom Mason:

Marvel bought the company for the coloring process but ALSO due to the fact that DC was planning on buying Ultraverse at the same time. DC and Marvel were pretty much running neck and neck with Marvel in the lead. The owner of Marvel at the time saw DC's attempt at buying Ultraverse as a ploy to get DC's 'numbers' higher than Marvel. Marvel had been on top for years and it was felt that if DC absorbed the Ultraverse that their 'numbers' could not only rival Marvel but PASS them in terms of 'King of the Hill' and this was something that was unthinkable. So, in that being said... Marvel made a HUGE push to buy the Ultraverse. Marvel was having it's pages colored over in Scotland at that time so an in house coloring process which was also years ahead of it's time back then was a very good production move. We are talking days to color a book as opposed to weeks AND they would not have to pay overseas rates to the colorists. Marvel gets a great coloring process AND gets to keep the #1 slot in the Battle of the Comic Book Top Three (and the rest of the world).

Malibu was so far in debt at the time (over a million bucks) that they had to get an advance FROM Marvel so that they would have the cash to pay their portion of the legal fees for the buy out.

A year ago I asked Joe Quesada about the Ultraverse characters and he had told me that yes, the rights to the Ultraverse characters were in hibernation but nobody knew if they would EVER wake up. There was talk of a Prime movie a while back but these things can take years to come to fruition and without the backing of any major players in the Marvel camp, he doubted we would ever see a movie OR the characters back in print.

Just as well by me because I loved these books when they first came out and operational control was held by Malibu... Marvel/Ultraverse books did not hold a lot of interest for me so even if they came out today, I would be a bit wary to get into them right away.

Nice set, too bad I only need one of the signed books AND have pretty much passed my 'limit' this month on books. But I was able to score some really nice Ultraverse, Bravura and Continuity books bringing me incredibly close to (sob, whimper)... the end.

I always knew that there was a HC from 'back in the day' but was never willing to pay the price for one. Tom Mason sent me this one a while back. I just never knew that there was a limited signed edition nor did he mention it to me.

He also sent me a prototype (not the character) edition of Ultraverse Preview. I think a couple other board member Ultraverse collectors may have this issue as well. Still neat to have....

Normally the word balloon only had the word 'CATCH' in it and these issues were 'numbered' in an attempt to make it a collectible, according to Tom Mason. Man, you GOTTA love all those gimmicks that they did.
