Old video games

Post by depluto »

Anybody else here into old video games? I've been picking up more and more of the old NES, Intellivision and Atari 2600 stuff.

I do this because I'm a geek, of course. But they're just so damn cool!

I normally just rock the ROMs....I can hook a controller up to my computer and just go from there...of course I own all of the games that I have roms for, but just like to play them on my computer....anyone into speed runs on video games...now that is truly geeky... :thumb:

I am thinking of getting the sega/sonic one for my GF..she loves sonic and has always wanted a sega to play it...now I can get it all in a handy little joystick....amazing that they can make it so small these days...or course if they wanted to think how many games you could fit on a ipod style cart...each NES rom is around 4-600kb the new IPOD is what 40 gigs...what about 100 million nes games...I dont think that there are that many  So basically you could carry in your pocket every video game ever made up through, probably, SNES..why dont they have that yet...I wonder how much it would cost...imagine 100K games in your pocket...you could just hook it into a tv or use the little screen to play the games...a small usb type controller port with a sweet universal controller for all of the games....now that would be awesom... :thumb:

I actually meant in a "collecting" kind of way. Old NES games are pretty cheap, and just look cool. Especially with original boxes.

They're not that old, but I also want every Dreamcast game ever made. There are (I think) 243.

I'm not really into any old console games but a couple of my friends are. One recently bought a super NES and the other bought an old Intellivision system. We broke out the NES and played 'Rock and Roll Racer' one night. That nearly ended in a fistfight the competition got so heated.

Now that's what I'm talking about!

I remember a friend of mine about 10 years ago kicking the *SQUEE* out of another friend's 12-year-old son in Mortal Kombat. Little wuss had tears in his eyes, but they were tears of rage!

Yeah, the older systems are only really fun with a few friends for the occasional retro game.

I am building a mame cabinet right now. Basically it is an arcade cabinet with a computer in it. When it is done it will be able to play all the roms that you can download as long as you have enough controls. When mine is finished it will have 2 8 way joysticks, 1 4 way, 7 buttons per player and a shift button, 3in trackball and maybe a set of guns. I have all the parts but the guns. I will post pics when it is done.

I know that you can download torrent files that have EVERY game ever made for pretty much any system.

It is mostly for my kids as I am going to put a tv tuner card in it so the can watch tv/vcr tapes, dvd's, movies that I download, and music. I was also thinking of putting a wireless network card in it so the could surf the net too.

Mame stands for multiple arcade machine emulator and will play just about every arcade game ever made. Here is a cool site if anyone wants to check it out. http://www.arcadecontrols.com/arcade.htm

Has anyone else seen one of these or am I it? I only found out about it when I was looking on ebay for another full size arcade and saw one. I had most of the computer parts laying around and figured I would give it a shot.
Here is a picture of one of my games. I want the mame one to have interchangable control panels so I will be able to have different ones for different games. IE flight control for flying games, steering wheel for driving ect. The game on the left is afterburner which I think I am going to convert to mame.

I work with a kid (I say kid ... he's 28, I guess he was a kid when he started with us) who built one of these. Similar to the one you described except for the guns.

His is verrrry impressive and works very well. I think his total bill was well under $1,000, including bits of airplane metal he had cut for the outside skin, a decent computer and the old-school monitor.

For the cabinet itself he just bought an old broken down empty game cabinet and fixed it up. He had to cut the board that the joysticks rest on and designed the plastic sign over the top but the rest of the parts he bought online or in a shop near here.

Awesome. I am aiming to be done by christmas so I can give it to my kids, but I have never played one and wasnt quite sure if it would be as cool as I imagined it to be or not. It is nice to hear that they are good from someone who isnt building them.

I dont have much in it at all. The controls cost about $150, but then I had everything for a computer that will play it laying around except for a power supply. I am using the amp from an old set of computer speakers to power old car stereo 4in speakers. The one part I dont want to use, but think I am going to have to unless I find a good deal is MY computer monitor. It is a 21 in, but then I will be stuck using a 17 in until I can replace it. I picked up an old Bad Dudes cabinet off ebay for $40 (it was 20 minutes away from my house so no shipping costs. I have yet to get the wood, glass, and misc hardware I need though.

All in all, I figure I will have about $400 in it, but that is only because I have a bunch of older computer parts. (Not too old though AMD 2000, dvd, 256 ram, ati radeon 64mb w tv out, ati TV wonder card, Either a 40 gig or a 30 gig hard drive, not sure which one I want to use)

On another note I have an old 450 mhertz laptop that I may turn into a Bar top machine for my parents christmas gift. It would only play the older games like pacman, donkey kong etc, maybe nintendo I am not sure.

I hear the monitors are extremely dangerous, something about holding a charge in there that can be fatal if handled wrong.

And it's amazing just how LOUD one of those machines is when it's by itself in someone's living room. Righteous!

30 gigs should be fine on your hard drive ... not very many of those ROMs take up much space. Every U.S. N64 game ever made barely takes up 5G. Arcade ROMs are much smaller.

Wow! This is what frustrated me the most about Nintendo 64, they were too slow with releasing the games and too few of them came out, Super Nintendo really Seemed to have a lot more to choose from as well as the original Nes. Gamecube is doing a little better about the amount of good titles but it's still not what Super Nintendo was.

That was a huge disappointment for me, too. The N64 games were, IMO, superior to the PlayStation games, especially early on.

Mario, Diddy Kong Racing, Goldeneye, Turok, Zelda ... stunningly good stuff. Most amazing is that they never did a Super Mario 64 sequel. They had five years to get that done!

And as the PS picked up steam and started pumping out better and better games, the N64 never kept up.

The games also weren't real big. Most were either 8 or 16 meg. I'm not sure what the total number is in the US. Well under 1,000, I think.

Just the Zelda series alone is enough to keep me buying Nintendo consoles, but I too would have liked to have seen a sequel to the Super Mario 64. It was was one of the best replayable games (besides Zelda) that they made for the 64. BTW I see the new Metroid is about to be released and I can't wait! Metroid Prime was awesome and very challenging, the previews I have seen for the new one look very promising.

Dude!

That was one of the great games. I played Joust so long one day that I maxed out the score (it quit keeping track at, I think, 9,999,999. So then I spent the next 30 minutes killing off my guys, jumping one after the other into the lava, just so I could put my name on the high score list. Joust gave you 20 spaces to write with too, none of this three-initial crap.

That information was provided in case somebody was thinking of voting "No" on the geek poll. :P

But my all-time favorite arcade game is Moon Patrol.

Look hard enough and you can get a Joust machine for under a G.

Ah, old-school PC goodness ... it's amazing how far they've come in 10 years.

Have you tried the new Sims games? It's fun stuff to play in short bursts, although it's almost creepy. Maybe that's a good thing ...

Thanks for picking this thread back up, BTW. One of my favorites!

I still want to know who voted "No."
