Gold Key Magnus set complete!

Post by Rai-fan »

Howdy, folks.

I started collecting Valiant with Unity 0 when I was 14. Today my VH1 set is short 16 books.

But I'm happy to say that, as of this week (after 5 years of hunting), my Gold Key Magnus set of 1-46 is finally complete in CGC 9.0 or better (average 9.6).

You can see all of the books in my gallery here: http://bit.ly/1OOBbxM" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I also finished the Mexican reprint series of Magnus 1-28, which I posted to the CGC boards (along with other French, Italian & Dutch) reprints here: http://bit.ly/1nGlqm1" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Great to see you on the boards. I was admiring your set over the holidays. Amazing how much time and curation went into the set, and the number of 9.8s is mind-boggling. I mean, these GK books are rags for the most part. Finding a decent copy is no mean feat! I'd love to see someone see my Valiant collection at some point in the same light. Of course, it won't have the age this one has, of course, which makes this one all the more special. :thumb:

I only have a couple of GK Magnus slabs.
19 (9.4)
21 (9)
22 (9.4)
23 (9.2)
28 (9.4)

I just acquired about 25 raws that I'm going to screen and press. My goal is in the 8.5+ range though, maybe dipping a bit for #1.

Thanks!

And hey - 9.0s an up are not easy. Particularly that 9.4 # 28.

Are you scoates on the registry? If so, I love your VH1 Rai set! (I am, after all, Rai-fan).

And, I wasn't thinking about this, but I did inventory my closet full of Magnus books today. Be happy to sell you some undercopies if you wish (I know I have # 2 in 8.5, for instance, and a bunch of later numbers in 9.2-9.4 range).

I am scoates, and thanks! Hopefully, I'll be able to close on a Rai blue TPB soon! I have 2 copies with CGC!

Like you, I've been focusing on foreign variants, but for V1/Acclaim books. Getting them in high grade has been tough. Just got relatively lucky on some German copies.

I'm always up for a trade or deal. I just acquired an F-VF Magnus run that I need to screen, so I probably won't be looking in the near term. That and my office is packed with various Valiant projects. I haven't focused too much on GK issues. When I'm at a con or store and I always look for high grade copies and pick them up for submission.

I was always more of a V1 Solar fan, and read much of the 12 or so GK issues. I liked early Solar action, but the "origin" stuff is pretty awful!

Beautiful. And included some books I didn't know about. More to track down :)

@NycJadie - no worries!

Curious about the VH1 foreigns.

I had a full run of the Italian X-O issues at one point, but I never found the Italian (?) version of Magnus 0.

Are there other VH1 foreigns?

I may need to get back into collecting these.

I don't know much about them, honestly. For V1, there are Spanish, Italian and Chinese versions. For Acclaim, I know there are German.

I posted this recently:
http://www.valiantfans.com/forum/viewto ... =1&t=47254" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have some very nice German copies that came in, if you're interested (Turok, Armorines, Shadowman). I'll be putting them up for trade/sale at some point in the near future.

I also have a few copies of MRF Yearbook signed by Dave Dorman. I met him last summer with an armful of MRF Yearbooks. Everyone else had Star Wars covers. Hah! In retrospect, I should have CGCd some Star Wars books.

Late to this thread. But WOW very impressive. By now you have probably already got those last 16 books you needed.

Not an easy feat! Congrats!

I'm still chipping away at an ungraded set and any shows I used to attend always had these looking worse for wear.

I think kids back in the day loved rolling up Gold Key's putting them in their back pocket and riding their bikes through sprinklers! :rant:

THIS! GK comics are so hard to find in better than VG condition. This is no easy feat, indeed!

An update:

This January, 7 years to the month after I completed my Gold Key Magnus # 1-46 in minimum 9.0 or better...

I completed it in straight CGC 9.4 or better.

Gallery link here: https://comics.www.collectors-society.c ... etID=44535

Persistence and patience is key - this is the long game.

Current numbers:

9.8: 16
9.6: 19
9.4: 11

My most recent addition?

# 36, CGC 9.8 - from a Heritage auction last month. This is one of the 70s reprints that are *evil* to find in 9.4 or better.

The search continues...

CGC 9.4 Magnus #1 (1963) is a ridiculously awesome book. A holy grail for Silver Age Valiant precursors. :clap:
(Only a single 9.6 grades higher, but I'm partial to the old label CGC books, personally.) :thumb:

Thanks, Greg!

I know the 9.4 # 1 is where the value is, but I'm super proud of the:

9.8 copy of # 2;
9.6 copy of # 22 ($.15 variant); and
9.6 copy of # 29 (There are 7 copies on the census - I sourced and slabbed 4 of them, including 3 of the 4 graded 9.0 or better).

After all these years, I've finally decided to work on a complete run of Gold Key Magnus and Solar (and maybe one day Turok). Just looking for raws, but the CGC set is impressive.

They're such fun comics. My collection is far from complete, but I have a good shortbox of Turoks, Magnus, and Solars with some other random Gold Keys/Dells.

I have most of the Dark Horse collections too, which aren't bad. But they're more fun to read with the original issues at the bigger size, old newsprint and slick covers with all the backup stories, letter pages, etc.

Congrats on such an accomplisment I have the first appearance of the 3 Gold Key/Valiant Characters and try to pick up the missing issues when I can find them on the cheap at shows.
