Re-Read Solar

Post by DarqueArcher »

I found Solar much like Bloodshot bearable all the way through the series. I thought even the little stint near the end by Dan Jurgens and Dick Giordano good with the other Earth.

I'm up to ten so far.

Not as great as I heard. But still pretty interesting.

Solar seems kinda dumb for a genius :?

I thought Solar was a decent title, start to finish. It had its funky moments, like the gay villain who "wanted" Solar, but aside from that and Phil's sudden interest in law enforcement-ahem-the series was alright :thumb:

Wow. I'm kinda surprised. Solar 10 is, in my opinion, at the top of the top in terms of output from Valiant.

Read Unity, and that may make you dig it a little bit more.

I agree with that, and 11 too. A couple of my favorite Valiant books, very Shooterish.

Don't get me wrong. I do like the books but I just didn't think they were some of Valiant's best work.

I just wasn't to thrilled with Solar's whole "I'm a bad guy and I can't even seduce a girl" type of personality.

I guess maybe he was more of a nerd than I would have liked :?

I haven't read any books in a few weeks, but 10 was one of the better books in the series so far.

I am reading the "Second Death" TPB, and noticed that in issue #1, one background character was reading a VALIANT "WWF" magazine in one panel.

So, I have read Solar all the way up to issue 31 since my last post.

I must say that I actually enjoed Vanhook's run much more than I liked the first 10 issues. To me, this book was better after unity.

I don't have anything past 31 right now so it's gonna be a while before I finish the series :(

I have a full run of Shadowman coming that I bought off eBay so I'll be reading that next. :thumb:

Although it's taking FOREVER to get here

32-55 aren't too hard to find, but the last 5 can be maddening. As for Shadowman, hope it arrived. I didn't like the first 3 books that much, at first, but the series eventually became one of my faves. Bob Hall rules. Wonder what he would've done with Solar...has to be better than the "I'm-a-cop" or "wanted-in-a-different-way" stories.

I did something a little different. I picked up the Solar Aplpha and Omega TPB and decided to read that first before I pick up Second Death or the original issues.

I know it's the zero issue and will probably spoil a few things in the first 10 issues for me, but kind of 'knowing' what it all 'means' before starting the main series gave the book a really nice sense of foreboding.

Plus, it's hard to beat that BWS art!

What a great read. I actually liked it reading it with the #1-10 story.

I really didnt care for how they wrapped up the series or his work in law enforcement. Other than the above mentioned items, I didnt think it was too bad. I am going to start reading shadowman next!

BQ got in the way of his "law enforcement" arc. I believe that the original treatment is posted/hosted on the site, in the ValiantVisions archives...

I just read Dan Jurgen's take on Solar; the "Black Solar" arc, if you will; it was enjoyable, but disappointing as well. The artwork was beautiful...dare I say "super?" Lol...

I also found the story to be very reminiscent of the original Solar arc penned by Shooter; which is why I think it was enjoyable? Lol... I dunno. I'm finding that as I read the end of the various Valiant runs, my disappointment lies in either how the authors completely disregard the magic of the character(s) initial intention, or how they just re-hash old stories over and over again; this seems to be the case with Solar. But again...I still love the books...lol. What a conundrum!

Jonesy, i think you don't love the books. I think its much the problem i have with it. I love the characters, so seeing them in some form of new story is great. But the end runs...... wow. I thought the last few issues of solar were garbage.

In my mind, they were created as follows: Its 10 minutes before the book is due at the printer. Someone cuts and pastes some art together. Someone else throws down some words on the pages. It hits the mail.

Then again, in all reality, at this point in the acclaim ownership, no one was reading them anyway

I had read 1-20, then 42-60...

Ehh...
To be honest, I hated 57-60, I mean seriously--- Seemed like the writer had disregard for Solar's character and turned him into freaking Dr.Manhattan.
