It's Time to Read Some VALIANT

Post by 400yrs »

So I've decided to re-read / read my Valiant comics. My reason is that I want to see what I want to keep and what I don't enjoy so that I can get rid of those books and get back some short box space.

I plan to read at least 5 books per week, but should be able to get a few more down. If I get to a point in a certain series where I'm not enjoying it and it becomes painful to read, I'm probably going to stop reading that series.

I'm going with the release date order. It seems like that would be the simplest way to read the books. If there's something else that makes more sense, give a shout, but I'm not getting nutty like MOTA going with chronological order.

As I go through, I'm going to wipe out the copy/pasted detail stuff aside from the issue numbers and rate the story/art/sequential art/overall 1-10 and maybe put a general comment to remember what I read. House art will probably get a 5 or 6 by default and the overall score will trend moreso with story (because that's what I care about). Sequential art score will trend with the story score unless there is a big problem sequentially or there is masterful storytelling.

Key:
E = Earth
FW = freewill
H = Harada
L = Leeja
M = Magnus
S = Solar
SAs = Spider aliens
Sy = Synchron
X = Xyrkol

* green * = good enough that it will be on my re-read list
green = liked it alot (probably would re-read)
blue = good (may re-read)
indigo = eh. take it or leave it (probably wouldn't re-read)
red = sucked (why did I buy this?)

VEI HC reads will only be rated on story, not art.

9/22-9/25/10 9 full issues (9)

Rai (mini-series) # 4 * 7/7/7/7 * Solar defeats Spider Aliens; 1A+Grannie=Grand One - leaves Japan
Magnus Robot Fighter # 0 5/4/5/5 ok, but doesn't add to storyline. Probably should be read before Mag #1, but still forgetable
Solar, Man of the Atom # 5 6/5/6/6 Solar visits / fights SAs in Peru; Dialogue getting uber geeky
Vintage Magnus # 1 4/4/4/4 H8; The tunic is disturbingly short.

X-O Manowar # 1 8/7/8/8 "Ho!" It's Aric vs. Lydia and the hard skins.
Harbinger # 3 7/--/--/-- 1: Ax-Hole and Rexo. Ax joins SAs. VEI coloring MUCH better in this issue.
Magnus Robot Fighter # 10 6/6/6/6 Xyrkol's mind restored by Pres Clane. X made leader of gophs. ok story, not much character stuff
Rai # 1 * 8/7/8/7 * 1: Rentaro Nakadai (Tohru's dad); Rai fights beside wife agnst healers, bad Grannie. Good set up and background info for a 1st issue.
Solar, Man of the Atom # 7 5/5/5/5 X-O armor (spider alien) vs. Solar. Word balloons only on 2 pages. Rest was thought.

10/10-10/16/10 - 10 total issues 9 read, 1 FAIL (36)
Vintage Magnus # 3 2/3/2/2 Dr Noel; Max suckage achieved. I'll be skimming the last issue. Blegh.
X-O Manowar # 2 7/--/--/-- Ho! Encino Man vs. Lydia. Ho!
Harbinger # 4 (with coupon) 7/--/--/-- Kids split up and get back together right away agnst Axe.
Magnus Robot Fighter # 11 * 9/7/9/9 * - Great issue. X goes nuts on E, L saves M who is captured by X; L & M save Sy&E, truce declared b/n Sy&E, L&M pardonned; L prone boned by X.

Solar, Man of the Atom # 9 8/6/8/8 1, D: God Baby; Pierce reveals she was in the accident, learns she is pregnant, baby kills people then dissapates.
X-O Manowar # 4 6/6/6/6 C:Boniface, Lydia; A&K go to NO to meet H and become allies.
Shadowman # 1 * 8/7/8/8 * 1: Jack Boniface (Shadowman), app: Lydia who tries to suck him dry. Not too much happened, but this was a great change of pace from the previous reads. I'm glad to be getting to Shadowman.

Harbinger #6 7/--/6/-- D: Torque, The weapon that kills Torque jumps around / disappears from panel to panel
Harbinger #0 6/--/--/-- quick origin. Good, but cliche - guy forces girl to do his will, etc
X-O Manowar #5 7/--/--/-- Aric misses home, Ken betrays Aric, Ax steals X-O armor but can't hack it.
Shadowman #2 * 8/7/8/8 * 1: Nettie, Scott, full costume (by Nettie); 1st mention of voodoo, fights Samide
Magnus Robot Fighter #13 * 9/8/9/9 * Surprisingly good, painted art? O: 1a, Magnus, 1a experimented and mutated people / things to be robot fighters. Baby Magnus was perfect. 1a put muties all in "The Asylum" so as not to kill them. Magnus realizes he has been on the wrong side.
Rai #4 5/5/5/5 pretty boring. Rai exiles himself from Japan.
Solar Man of The Atom #11 5/5/5/5 solar is talky; Pierce kills abusive hubby, "dies"
Archer & Armstrong #0 * 9/9/9/9 * One of my favs back in the day, still one of my favs

10/24-10/30/2010 - 11 issues read (60)
Harbinger #7 5/5/5/5 All Torque funeral issue. Forced funeral.
X-O Manowar #6 5/7/7/6 The 3 panel layouts were refreshing for a valiant book. X-O fights Ken. Gets out of armor, beats him. Gives Ken a steel arm.
Shadowman #3 5/6/6/5 SM vs. Sosa and child porn ring.
Magnus Robot Fighter #14 7/6/7/7 M kills Grand One Art was definitely rushed on this one.
Rai #5 6/6/6/6 - President killed, rai leaves with son and ends up on earth for unity
Unity #0 7/6/7/7 subpar art for BWS. Second Erica Pierce has plans to wipe out what Solar has done.
Eternal Warrior #1 * 8/7/8/8 * I'm not 100% certain, but I think this is the first valiant book where the art extends outside the panel a bit. That's so much better. Story spanning history. Kalam (Gilad's son) survives attack and has sons later - Gilgamesh and a king
Archer & Armstrong #1 7/8/8/7 - 1st mention of "Archies". Plan to kill Mothergod.
Magnus Robot Fighter #15 4/2/4/4 Holy *SQUEE* this is wordy. Bad art. Rokland tate and Ana Kawainui - geomancers. EW was psycho probed at some point. Pierce moves all of San Gabriel.
X-O Manowar #7 7/7/7/7 X-O vs. Dinosaurs. He rips one in half. What's cooler than that?

Harbinger #8 7/6/7/7 Pete finds out baby is Torque's, hurts Pierce. Nice deep colors.
Solar Man of The Atom #12 5/5/5/5 Pierce kills other self, keeps herself and Albert young, kills Solar, wordy. Feels like I've read the same thing 20 times now.
Eternal Warrior #2 4/5/4/4 forgettable
Archer & Armstrong #2 6/6/6/6 Turok app, Albert gets Archer to shoot Mothergod, doesn't kill her
Magnus Robot Fighter #16 5/2/5/5 - More retreading, art was uneven and terrible in some spots, Magnus born to Kris
X-O Manowar #8 7/7/7/7 MG gives XO mega-bim then tries to take the armor. X-O has warrior followers skammrs. Nice art.
Shadowman #5 7/6/7/7 SM + Elya = Love; A&A appearance. SM fights them. Decides he should be agnst MG.
Rai #7 7/7/7/7 - D: Rai

Solar Man of The Atom #13 7/8/8/7 Albert tries to kill MG, fails, Solar traps MG
Unity # 1 8/9/9/8 BWS art. Solar stops the reactor, defeats a black hole, sends everyone back to proper place. Elya and Jack split up. Solar takes M to future to 1a.

11/7/2010 - 11/13/2010 12 issues read (84)
Rai Companion - 5/5/5/5 - Geoff finds out about Mortalli, frees him. I tried to read the Unity timeline in the back of the tpb, but the background makes it hard to read. Bad choice there.
Archer and Armstrong # 3 8/8/8/8 BWS story, art; back in same spot before unity. They evade the sect, end up in Pope's room, sect is there
Eternal Warrior # 3 7/7/7/7 Aram vs. Gilad. I like the clean art style of John Dixon.
Harbinger # 10 5/5/5/5 The kids are back to finding other Harbingers (Shatiqua), Lapham appears to be imitating BWS, 1: Hard Corps
Magnus Robot Fighter # 17 4/4/4/4 Magnus kills Talpa after returning from lost land.
Rai # 8 5/5/5/5 Kazuyo kills Isao Seku, gets Takashi (son) back.
Shadowman # 6 5/5/5/5 SM vs rednecks.
Solar, Man of the Atom # 14 6/6/6/6 1: Fred Bender; Solar shows him what he does and creates another Pierce. This should be called "Going Back to the Well."
X-O Manowar # 9 7/7/7/7 Aric is returned to his time after Unity. Allies and enemies are agnst him. Aric buries himself at the end.
Archer and Armstrong # 4 7/7/7/7 vs. Sisters (brothers) of Doom; Spider-man reference

Magnus Robot Fighter # 18 6/5/6/6 1: Mekman and Hu-mimicking; Magnus working for Elzy. Willow Tall Tree leaves goph lev.
Predator vs Magnus # 1 3/5/3/3 The only interesting part of this was the X-O helmet and how it knew the predator.
Rai # 0 * 9/7/9/9 *
Shadowman # 7 8/6/8/8 This one gets a high score because Jack's acquaintence recognized him as SM in costume.
Solar, Man of the Atom # 15 7/6/7/7 Bender decides it's easier to be villain than a hero.
X-O Manowar # 10 * 9/6/9/9 * Aric awakes from 1600 yr hibernation - This was easily the best return to present after the lost land out of all the titles. Ken takes the ring when Aric drops it. Contemplates using the armor, but realizes it's not for him. Aric gets it back and the armor has changed. Good humor in this issue.... especially the first page. This was the first issue that surprised me how good it was in quite a bit during this re-reading project.
Archer and Armstrong # 5 7/8/7/7 Archer meets Andromeda (Aram's wife) - hilarious comments. Flo - dino.
Eternal Warrior # 5 6/6/6/6 Bloodshot app

Harbinger # 12 5/5/5/5 "Revenge" Flamingo regrets nearly killing Rock.

Shadowman # 8 * 8/7/8/8 * Darque in the shadows. Heavy on the voodoo.
Solar, Man of the Atom # 16 6/5/6/6 Harada puts Phile and Gayle up in hotel. War with SAs about to start.
X-O Manowar # 11 7/6/7/7 Partial origin of armor; armor starts acting diff; Ken gays it up big time (not that there's anything wrong with that).
Archer and Armstrong # 6 5/7/6/5 Andromeda revealed to be the goddess.
Formation of the Sect - Original VEI follow-up. Could be called Formation of the Suct.
Eternal Warrior # 6 6/6/6/6 Darque tortures Buck McHenry to understnad how geomancers work. Gilad goes to put Buck out of misery.
H.A.R.D. Corps # 2 4/4/4/4 No character development, just fighting. Betteer turn around fast.
Harbinger # 13 3/4/3/3 Zeph and bum vs street thugs (z solo issue). This was the issue where things started south for me back in the day. If I wanted to read Elfquest, I would buy it. I hate Zeph.

11/21 - 11/27/2010 24 issues (126)
Magnus Robot Fighter # 20 6/7/6/6 Colon art looks good; like he had time; Young M on vacation to Mars, saves governor's daughter.
Predator vs Magnus # 2 3/4/3/3 M defeats Predator, wins X-O ring, but doesn't want it.
Shadowman # 9 7/6/7/7 SM vs. Sosa - SM knows his death date so he fights w/o caution.

Harbinger # 14 6/6/6/6 Kris thinks of Magnus. Less Zeph = better issue
Magnus Robot Fighter # 21 4/4/4/4 Malev 6, Magnus learns that the bad dude took over Grand One. Forgettable
Shadowman # 10 * 9/8/9/9 * The best Shadowman book. Fantastic art and panel layouts. Darque and Sandria capture SM.
X-O Manowar # 13 7/6/7/6 Aric fights SA Champ, wins, SAs attack; Solar kills all SAs(did he blow up the moon?) Solar destroys spore of shanhara. Great cover
Solar, Man of the Atom # 18 6/5/6/6 Solar fixes problem that caused nuke in detroit first time around. Aric's isn't voiced properly in this
A & A 8 / EW 8 - 2/7/8/2 I'm very surprised I didn't like this issue, but I tried reading it a few times and it put me to sleep. Ended up skimming. 1: Ivar?

Magnus Robot Fighter # 22 6/4/6/6 D: Willow Talltree; more humans recycled,
Shadowman # 11 *10/9/10/10* second B Hall issue just gets better. SM and his GF Margo become death runners. Fantastic storytelling in the art.
Solar, Man of the Atom # 19 4/3/4/4 Solar and Gayle do virtual reality and fight the machine. Must've been during the VR kick in the 90s. This is dated.
X-O Manowar # 14 4/4/4/4 Jurassic Park story swiped. Art is really not my style.
Archer and Armstrong # 9 * 8/7/8/8 * A vs A; Darque gives Mademoiselle Noir a potion to slip Armstrong for him to kill Gilad. Armstrong tries to stop him, A vs A; nice art and colors
Bloodshot # 3 4/5/4/4 Bloodshot vs. mob

11/28/2010 - 12/4/2010 - 42 issues read (168)

Eternal Warrior # 9 4/4/4/4 EW gets the Book of Geo, fights 2 Darque goons. This issue felt unneccessarily long.
Harbinger # 16 4/5/4/4 Pete tries to get 2 disillusioned eggbreakers on his side, they choose no side. This basically is a repeat of an earlier issue. Ax appearance.

Shadowman # 14 * 8/10/10/9 * SM helps a redneck who is tormented by a group of a-holes. Art by Hall and Dixon and colors are fantastic. Flashback scenes look as good as Epting's recent Cap stuff.
Solar, Man of the Atom # 22 6/5/6/6 Darque is messing with Solar still. Awesome Quesada cover.

Magnus Robot Fighter # 26 2/4/2/2 I hate stories like this - a narrator in dialogue boxes. It's lazy. I skimmed it. Too bad that they put the Malevs origin in this issue. Crap.
Rai and the Future Force # 11 3/4/4/4 Malev War con'td. Fighting happens, Tekla returns yet again. Boring issue.
Shadowman # 15 7/7/7/7 Nice one off story, 1: RL McNeeley. a harbinger? who can give people visions when he touches them. He sees Elya and a bad / alien version of himself.

Timewalker #1 - This issue was not good.

6/15 - 6/18 - 8 issues read (400)
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter # 17 6/5/6/6 Jurassic Politics 3 parter by Bedard. This was good.
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter # 18 6/5/6/6 Jurassic Politics 3 parter by Bedard. This was good.
Turok: Dinosaur Hunter # 19 6/6/6/6 Jurassic Politics 3 parter by Bedard. This was good. I liked the colors.
Geomancer # 1 6/6/6/6 Read EW 27 first. some exposition on Clay McHenry's past - bad cop. The colors were too dark and hurt some of the pencils. The concept of Geomancer regeneration introduced - Clay buried after he is injured by zombies
Geomancer # 2 6/6/7/6 Geoff regenerated when he was a little boy. Clay tells off Gilad. Nice panel layouts by Rags
Armorines # 6 4/5/4/4 guest starring X-O. Calafiore draws awesome armor and spider aliens, but the faces are rough.
Armorines # 7 3/6/3/3 guest starring x-o. free people stuck in pods for years.
Magnus Robot Fighter # 42 5/5/5/5 Brother vs. brother.

6/19 - 6/ - 6/25/11 23 issues (423)
Magnus Robot Fighter Yearbook # 1 3/4/3/3
Magnus Robot Fighter # 43 5/5/5/5 - The Geomancer Quest 1/4
Magnus Robot Fighter # 44 5/5/5/5 - The Geomancer Quest 2/4
Magnus Robot Fighter # 45 5/5/5/5 - The Geomancer Quest 3/4
Magnus Robot Fighter # 46 5/5/5/5 - The Geomancer Quest 4/4
Torque goes to find Armstrong who hasn't been seen in centuries. Magnus returns and the Immortal Enemy takes him over. A man named Bozzi finds a hurt Torque. He ends up being Armstrong.
Eternal Warrior # 27 6/6/6/6 Gilad return after CE to find out Gilad, Aram and Armstrong are gone. He searches Geoff's family for a new goemancer. Elyot Zorn, a cousin, is crazy and wants the book.
Eternal Warrior # 28 5/5/5/5 Immortal War 1/4 - Couldn't they think of a different enemy for Gilad?
Eternal Warrior # 29 5/5/5/5 Immortal War 2/4 - There were some art problems in these. Some panels, you can't really see understand what happened.
Eternal Warrior # 30 5/5/5/5 Immortal War 3/4 - Some of the panel layouts are cool. coloring is bit noirish.
Eternal Warrior # 31 4/5/4/4 Immortal War 4/4 - Gilad gets the idea to take him to Antarctica to freeze him. How original. Why didn't he think of this before?
Harbinger # 35 7/6/7/7 No Tomorrow 1/3
Harbinger # 36 7/6/7/7 No Tomorrow 2/3
Harbinger # 37 6/5/6/6 No Tomorrow 3/3
- This story focused on Faith and what happened right after the battle b/n Pete and Harada and how Faith "forgot" everything. It did a good job of pulling together some things that just didn't make sense. That was the first issue. The second issue featured Magnus and the origin of Faith. Magnus must've just gotten done with CE???? Faith's mother and father were both deemed to be "breeders" so they were matched by the Harbinger foundation and worked for them the whole time. Her father is dead. Faith learns that she is to destroy Harada's shuttle thingy.

The first two issues pencilled by Chen were very good. The last issue's art was ok.

Although I liked these, I don't get 2 things - 1. why did Harada want a shuttle? 2. Did the Harby kids attack Pete like they wrote in this issue or was that just a writing mechanism to explain why the big showdown happened? I didn't think that bit was necessary. Maybe it did happen and I don't remember.

H.A.R.D. Corps # 24 5/5/5/5 A good done in one story. A boxer named Ironhead Abdul is told to throw a fight. He doesn't and is slipped something to put him in a coma. He becomes a HC and seeks revenge. He is dead by the end of the issue.
H.A.R.D. Corps # 25 5/3/5/5 Team goes after a harby, Earl Simkus, who is dangerous and Heydrich wants killed. Is heydrich harada's bro? The eyes are drawn terrible.
H.A.R.D. Corps # 26 6/5/6/6 team learns truth about Heydrich - they weren't in comas, were injured further at heydrich's request. Omen board turns on Heydrich. He gets a new member, grasshopper, to assasinate a member.
Ninjak # 9 2/4/2/2 Ninjak fights some dogs
Ninjak # 10 1/4/1/1 Holy crap this was wordy and bad. Vs russians or something. If you are going to make a crappy comic, make it a quick read, please.
Psi-Lords #4 3/5/3/3 Ravenrock returning to kick *SQUEE*. The art is soft in these b/c of the Valiant Vision, but I like it.
Psi-Lords #5 4/5/4/4 Ravenrock. This has a very Star Wars feel to it.
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 12 3/4/3/3 Hwen figures out how to make himself solid for several hours.
PSI-Lords # 6 2/4/2/2 vs. Frogs. Yay!
PSI-Lords # 7 2/4/2/2 vs. Frogs. Yay!

6/26 -7/2 6 issues (429)
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 13 5/5/5/5 relationship squabbles with ex boyfriend.
Secret Weapons # 14 -/-/-/- I read this, but don't remember anything about it. It wasn't good though.
Secret Weapons # 15 2/5/2/2 the creators of the suits want them back. There are a few nice pages in here
X-O Manowar # 34 5/5/5/5 Vengeance Trail 1/3 Agannon took over Skammers after Aric abandoned them.
X-O Manowar # 35 5/5/5/5 VT 2/3
X-O Manowar # 36 5/5/5/5 VT 3/3 Aric takes back rule of Skammers

7/3 -7/9 6 issues (435)

Bloodshot # 21 5/5/5/5 vs Ax
Bloodshot # 22 5/5/5/5 vs Immortal Enemy's mercenaries
Bloodshot # 235/5/5/5 vs Immortal Enemy's mercenaries
X-O Manowar # 1/2 3/5/3/3 This sets up the Wolfbridge story, but it didn't feel completely X-O ish
Ninjak # 11 5/5/5/5 Abnett and Lanning - The first Ninjak book I didn't skim.
Ninjak # 12 3/5/3/3 This one wasn't as good.

7/10 - 7/28/11 17 issues (452)
Rai # 27 5/5/5/5 Obadiah earns the blood and a bit of respect from Spylocke. Takashi is going nuts and strenthening the armor after killing his mother.
Rai # 28 4/5/4/4 Bro vs Bro. Obadiah kills? Takashi?
Harbinger Files # 2 2/4/2/2 Mystery guy (sting) becomes Harada's secret weapon. How? It doesn't matter, I guess..... stoopid storytelling.
Solar, Man of the Atom # 39 4/4/4/4 Phil decides to take down nuke facilities again. Destroyer finds a place without laws he can patrol.
Solar, Man of the Atom # 40 2/4/2/2 Gayle helps get rid of bad Phil. Retread by Van Hook.
Solar, Man of the Atom # 41 2/4/2/2 Harada needs Solar to fix a space ship.
Rai # 29 2/5/2/2 Former Rai Rentaro Nakadai shows up
Shadowman # 30 6/7/7/6 Back from CE, home is destroyed, sax stolen
Rai # 30 3/5/3/3 Love - Spylocke, Rai, Mother Nike all in love.
Destroyer # 0 5/5/5/5 Destroyer takes lead of Tritan, Neptune's largest moon, full of cast offs.
Ninjak Yearbook 3/8/4/5 Hitch art is nice, but there are problems with some of the page layouts making it confusing to read in spots. Silk selling red mercury. plot foiled.
Shadowman # 31 7/8/10/8 Jack gets his sax back after playing it for the pawn shop guy. Vs. Anton Quigley (Darque's night monster). He absorbs Jack. He has absorbed many old people. Brilliant page layouts in this.
Shadowman # 32 7/8/9/8 Still inside Quigley with many others including crazy assed Baron Zastrow. Sandria kisses Quigley and drives him nuts.
Shadowman # 33 7/8/10/8 Sandria and Zastrow team up to create a gator monster that devours Quigley. Sandria's boy toy James dies and Sandria plans to bring him back. Nettie was made young and is trying to restore her old age to get her power back. Gangster Luis Rojas shows up with the intention of taking the island in the bayou and young Nettie while he's at it.
Solar, Man of the Atom # 42 3/4/3/3 vs The servants of Master Darque who seek phil to bring Darque back. Phil and Gayle go on vacation.
Solar, Man of the Atom # 43 3/4/3/3 vs The servants of Master Darque who seek phil to bring Darque back. Phil and Gayle go on vacation.
Solar, Man of the Atom # 44 8/5/5/8 by Christopher Priest. This craps all over the Phil Seleski character, but the story itself is really good. Phil never sleeps so what does he do while Gayle is asleep? A second life as a cop named Phil Miller with a lady named Brenda. Gayle knows.

7/29/11 - 8/11/2011 22 issues (474)
Solar, Man of the Atom # 45 5/5/5/5 Brenda (Phil's second woman) confronts Gayle and tells her everything. This one was a bit disjointed for sure. You can tell the story was chopped.
Geomancer # 3 3/3/3/3 Clay goes to Egypt and encounters necromantic power.
Geomancer # 4 3/3/3/3 Fights cousin Elyot Zorn who has the ability, but he wasn't a pure soul.
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 14 3/4/3/3 Haunted house
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 15 3/4/3/3 Haunted house
X-O Manowar # 37 4/5/4/4 Wolfbridge Affair 4 parter. This could've been one issue.
X-O Manowar # 38
X-O Manowar # 39
X-O Manowar # 40
X-O Manowar # 41 5/6/5/5 Aftermath. Randy don't want none of that! This almost could've been the whole wolfbridge story
X-O Manowar # 42 5/5/5/5 vs shadowman

July 2012 (495):
Eternal Warrior # 32 4/4/4/4 Gil vs Gang
Eternal Warrior # 33 4/4/4/4 "Mortal Kin 1/3" - EW's daughter was Jack the Ripper. Another son, Durant, kills Gil's GFs in current times.
Eternal Warrior # 34 4/5/5/4 "Mortal Kin 2/3" - "I always have to kill my children" - Gil's kids are always bad b/c of his immortal nature. Gil gets armed cut off by train
Eternal Warrior # 35 4/5/5/4 - "Mortal Kin 3/3" - Gil kills Durant and the daughter from the past.

Timewalker # 2 5/6/6/5 - Ivar wants to stop the Charge of the Light Brigade so the poem won't be written. He ends up being the one who instigated it.
Eternal Warrior Yearbook # 2 5/5/5/5 - Gil's kids are born to kill and to hate. One child in late 1600s was born and ended up being the Immortal Enemy. He becomes a plundering pirate and Gil kills him.
Armorines # 8 2/4/4/2 I have no idea what this title has to do with Valiant. And it's bad.
Armorines # 9 2/4/4/2 President Clinton is in this one
Bloodshot # 24 2/4/4/2 Guest starring Geomancer
Secret Weapons # 16 -/-/-/- I read these, but I don't remember anything about them. Dr. Silk. Must've sucked.
Secret Weapons # 17 -/-/-/- I read these, but I don't remember anything about them. Must've sucked.
Secret Weapons # 18 -/-/-/- I read these, but I don't remember anything about them. Ninjak. Must've sucked.
Secrets of the Valiant Universe # 3 6/6/6/6 Sho Sugino, a bum who lived in sewers was chosen by Grandmother to be her champion to go to the lost land and recover the blood of heroes from the UAG (united anti grannies). He did so, then Grandmother banished him to the lost land and chose the Nakadai line to be her champions since they were of better blood. Sugino went on to fight for mother god in the lost land, but always wanted to get back home to serve justice to grandmother.
Bloodshot # 25 1/5/5/2 Uzi the clown and Alligators. WTF VanHook?
Bloodshot # 26 1/5/5/2 Uzi the clown and Alligators. WTF VanHook?
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 16 3/5/3/3 Deathsmith is kind of cool except for the way he talks.
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 17 3/5/3/3 Deathsmith is kind of cool except for the way he talks.
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 18 3/5/3/3 Deathsmith is kind of cool except for the way he talks.
PSI-Lords # 8 I read this, but I don't remember much about it.

September 2012:
Ninjak # 13 4/4/4/4 One and done featuring another brit operative
Ninjak # 14 & 15 5/5/5/5 Cry Wolf 2 parter. White wolf (a Sabretooth clone) seeks revenge on Ninjak for the death of his son. Not bad, but it's hard for black ops stories from this period not to be dated.
Solar, Man of the Atom # 46, 47, 48 2/3/3/2 Dan Jurgens takes over and this is a completely different book. Solar is a god and there is a super human team trying to find him (Flashpoint) that works for the US govt. The VP was killed and so was the president. Craptacular.
Magnus Robot Fighter # 47 & 48 3/3/3/3 Poofy haired Magnus hates on some robots who took Leeja. There are some huge eyebrows in this book!
Geomancer # 5 & 6 4/4/4/4 Geo vs crooked cops. I liked the intros with Hoan of Arc being a Geomancer and the Indian intro
Visitor vs Valiant Universe # 1 4/4/4/4 Alien arrives. Hero? Menace? No one Knows!!
Armorines # 10, 11, 12 5/5/4/5 Cuban Connection 1&2 and last issue - Fidel Castro in comics. I liked the dinner scene because of the Cuban-ness of life. Conyo! Gunny was blackmailed into leaving the armorines.
Unity Lost Chapter # 1 2/4/2/2 This was an excuse to sell an extra X-O book.

The first 18 months looks pretty decent and solid. It's about Nov92 to Jan93 where things start to slide.

Not sure where it's going to pick up again. :?

Enjoy! :thumb:

Nov 92 with Predator Vs. Magnus is a pretty good mark for the start of the slide.

I know I liked most of what I read up through Aug 93 and Harby a bit further, but we'll see. :thumb:

Kewl Kwotes:

Magnus 4:
Tekla - "Tell me, Magnus... What is love?"
Magnus - "The way most humans describe it, it sounds like a disease."

Magnus to Elzy - "Body hair is for rodents. And Gophs."

X-O Manowar #3:
Sniper to H: "What is in it for you?"
H: "Satisfaction! I need no more acclaim."

Aric in thought: "As soon as I triumph I am going back to K'nn's book of English.

I must learn how to say bad things about these people's mothers!"

After reading Steel Nation and quickly flipping Alpha & Omega and seeing the beautiful BWS art with the gorgeous coloring, to my surprise, I'm actually quite excited to be reading this stuff again.

:thumb:

Magnus never really hit me back in the day when it came out. I think I was a bit young for it back then. When I last re-read the Pre-Unity books, I discovered that as I grew older, Magnus is the best of it. I think it's the flawed character aspect which I like so much..... the humanity of a character who kills robots.

I remember really liking Invasion as well, but up next is A&O.

Figured I'd reflect on runs as I wrap them up.

Archer & Armstrong #0 * 9/9/9/9 * One of my favs back in the day, still one of my favs
Archer & Armstrong #1 7/8/8/7 - 1st mention of "Archies". Plan to kill Mothergod.
Archer & Armstrong #2 6/6/6/6 Turok app, Albert gets Archer to shoot Mothergod, doesn't kill her
Archer and Armstrong # 3 8/8/8/8 BWS story, art; back in same spot before unity. They evade the sect, end up in Pope's room, sect is there
Archer and Armstrong # 4 7/7/7/7 vs. Sisters (brothers) of Doom; Spider-man reference
Archer and Armstrong # 5 7/8/7/7 Archer meets Andromeda (Aram's wife) - hilarious comments. Flo - dino.
Archer and Armstrong # 6 5/7/6/5 Andromeda revealed to be the goddess.
Archer and Armstrong # 7 5/6/6/5 Armstrong fights, Archer writes
Archer and Armstrong # 9 * 8/7/8/8 * A vs A; Darque gives Mademoiselle Noir a potion to slip Armstrong for him to kill Gilad. Armstrong tries to stop him, A vs A; nice art and colors
Archer and Armstrong # 10 6/8/6/6 Cute story. Archer meets Ivar who pulls a Bill and Ted. Satchel stealing kid is back.
Archer and Armstrong # 11 8/8/8/8 Armstrong is responsible for all the time warps, he built Stonehenge. Ivar travels through time to get back to Nefretete. Solar shows up and sends everyone back. When Ivar gets in the time-flow, F7 a robot jumps in with him and he may not end up in ancient Egypt.
Archer and Armstrong # 12 5/6/5/5 I liked this issue back in the day, but now it's not as funny and it reads like BWS was running out of ideas.
Archer and Armstrong # 13 4/5/4/5 1st Gonzalez issue. He goes to the "get Archer laid" well. Sect shows up at the end of the story.
Archer and Armstrong # 14 4/4/4/4 Attacked at their new home. Blonde neighbor kills other neighbor bobby (actor).
Archer and Armstrong # 15 5/5/5/5 A&A go to get Aram's paintings back. All destroyed.
Archer and Armstrong # 16 3/5/3/3 in Vegas vs. Sect. Lame humor.
Archer and Armstrong # 17 3/3/3/3 Looking for riches and paintings underwater? What dumbass editor let this story fly?
Archer and Armstrong # 18 4/1/4/4 This cover has always *SQUEE* me off. If you are going to allow an artist to take a crack at a classic, at least use a decent artist!!
Archer and Armstrong # 19 2/4/2/2 *SQUEE* terrible. Armstrong kills or knocks out Duerst with breath from a liver and onion sandwich.
Archer and Armstrong # 20 5/5/5/5 first decent A&A in a while. Archer dresses as Santa. Archer joins a gang that turns out to be bad.
Archer and Armstrong # 21 4/4/4/4 App: SM, Darque; Archer goes to get Darque for destroying the temple at Ladakh.
Archer and Armstrong # 22 4/4/4/4 App: SM, Darque; Sandria stops Darque from killing A&A
Archer and Armstrong # 23 4/2/4/4 Archer saves and befriends a kid who is the son of a drug lord.
Archer and Armstrong # 24 3/2/3/3 Story with the kid concludes
Archer and Armstrong # 25 2/4/2/2 Part one of cross-over with EW going back in time to when sect was formed.
Archer and Armstrong # 26 - Part of Chaos Effect

A&A Summary - Although I didn't enjoy #8 and 12, the BWS issues were good but not good as I remember. #0 is probably one of the best origin issues I've ever read. The rest were pretty much terrible.

Second Life of Dr Mirage # 1 5/7/5/5 Hwen and Carmen Mirage study necromancy. They discover Darque
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 2 3/5/3/3 Darque is down, but they don't kill him. Thank goodness they don't try more husband and wife books.
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 3 4/5/4/4 "Domestic trouble". Hwen figures out a way to touch Carmen.
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 4 1/5/1/1 A Darque Bull? Are you freeking kidding me Layton?
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 5 5/5/5/5 A bit cheesy, but the story was fine. Darque needs the intangible Mirage to pull shadowman through a small time portal.
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 6 3/5/3/3 Dr. Dong and Carmen take a vacation to Aspen. Eclipse shows up.
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 7 3/5/3/3 vs Eclipse
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 8 4/5/4/4 This one had to be done. Hwen misses eating and loses his powers. Sandria helps. Rico is probably the best character in this series.
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 9 5/5/5/5 The Otherman imitates Hwen to get some sezy time with Carmen.
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 10 4/5/4/4 Hwen vs. The Otherman.
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 11
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 12 3/4/3/3 Hwen figures out how to make himself solid for several hours.
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 13 5/5/5/5 relationship squabbles with ex boyfriend.
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 14 3/4/3/3 Haunted house
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 15 3/4/3/3 Haunted house
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 16 3/5/3/3 Deathsmith is kind of cool except for the way he talks.
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 17 3/5/3/3 Deathsmith is kind of cool except for the way he talks.
Second Life of Dr Mirage # 18 3/5/3/3 Deathsmith is kind of cool except for the way he talks.

Second Life of Dr Mirage Summary - I didn't like much of any of this. If VEI tries to revive it, they need to put a Strangers in Paradise touch to it rather than a wacky, romantic comedy angle because that just didn't work.

What stands out in these early issues is Magnus' humanity and the excellent BWS storytelling in A&O. Also, the Rai mini is alot better than I remembered. The colors by Jade are beautiful.
It's a testament to how good those books really are that they stand the test of time so well...

I'm getting near the point where I'll have to read singles rather than trades. I just started pulling singles for the next week or two and it's a bit of a PITA to go through the different boxes.

I definitely like having trades available to just pick up and read and put back on the old book shelf. Trades are the future of comics. Convenient to store, convenient to grab, convenient to flip back through.

Also, I'd completely forgotten about the VEI HCs. I'll be using those going forward (which will get me a few more issues of using collections rather than singles).

I did just read the old Harby trade for Harby #1 and then just flipped the VEI HC to compare. The coloring is definitely way different. Since I'm now in early 90s mode after reading a dozen or so issues of VH1, it's definitely a jolt to the system looking at the VEI HC. The coloring is good and much more modern, but way different.

Harbinger is such an X-Men rip-off, it's insane. There's a line in there about Harada that reads just like a pull from X-Men. The story for #1 is good so I gave it a "7", but it's completely unoriginal and disappointing to re-read.

In the early part of this re-reading, Magnus (including the Rai mini) is my favorite. He is the most human character so far in the universe. Back in the day, Harby was my favorite.

Edit: For the issues that I'm reading in VEI HC (starting with Harby 2), I will only be rating the story. Reason - the digital coloring really takes away from the art and it really doesn't work with the art at all. Therefore, it's not really possible to rate the original art fairly..... line art or inks.

I think this is a result of the x-men MOVIES, not the old comics...at the time harbinger was printed, the harby and x-men resembled each other very little...

You may be right. I thought Magneto was always a conflicted character between good and bad like Harada though.

Pete always reminded me of Cyclops, Kris / Jean, Flamingo / Rogue, Torque / Colossus. To me, Zephyr was the only character that felt unique and I hated her. She was annoying.

Just read Magnus #8. Looking at this stuff again, I'd love to own some of the color art from this issue or any of the Rai minis. The purples and the blues are great. Seems like I enjoy the stuff by Jade the most. Seeing the armor, I'm pumped to get to X-O. Woot, woot!

9/26-10/2 books:

Glad to get to another title (Harby). Not sure why they thought Vintage Magnus was a good idea.

I wish they used a splash page or a double spread page every once in a while, but I know that's not the Valiant style. I'm a bit miffed that Shooter is sticking to that style with the Dark Key books. Not a good idea in the modern market.

Looking forward to getting in to X-O issues soon.

10/3-10/9/10 Books:

Busy week. I'm surprised I was able to get 6 issues in. More of the same to come. <sigh>

Rai and X-O both start.

I've discovered that the list that I pulled isn't really in order. It may be in order by month or something, but I read XO #1 and then later Solar #7. Solar #7 was obviously before X-O #1 chronologically (and I'm sure by release) because a spider alien fought Solar with the X-O class armor which Aric stole in X-O #1.

If anyone has a link to a list list of release date by week and then chronology, I would appreciate it greatly. :thumb:

"Hell to the no!!!"

He would have me reading a page from this issue and then a page from another one and so on.....

I'm just trying to get max enjoyment out of these because I know they are going to start sucking eventually. Reading in order would help that. :thumb:

10/10-10/16/10 - 10 total issues 9 read, 1 FAIL

There were some really terrific issues in this bunch, but the Vintage Magnus was just unreadable for me.

There were some of the strongest issues so far from X-O, Magnus, and Harbinger because there were more character issues which is what I like.

Of course, this bunch also included the famous panel with Dr. Noel prone boning Leeja. Awesome!

10/17-10/23/10 - 13 issues read

This was probably my favorite week of re-reading so far:
- Some of my favorites started - Shadowman and A&A
- There were some really fantastic story issues - Solar 10, A&A 0.
- One book completely surprised me - Magnus 13 was fantastic (story and art). I'm not sure I ever read this issue because it's kind of stuck between the 1st Turok and Unity.

I really liked both Shadowman and A&A back in the day because they felt like a real change of pace from most other comics.

The Magnus #13 and #14 and two of my favorite Valiant books. I love the painted art work. I was hoarding these book BIG time.

I just read 13 and 14 last week. Ernie Colon's painted art was amazing. I wish that it would have continued past just a few issues.
