Bloodshot #1 (2012) 1:50 variant not as rare as thought...

Post by greg »

The three titles that Valiant released first in 2012 were:
X-O Manowar #1
Harbinger #1
Bloodshot #1

Each of these first three books has a 1:50 variant.
X-O Manowar #1 and Harbinger #1 had the 1:50 variant as "for every 50 copies of regular and pullbox covers ordered [any comb.], retailers may order one free variant."

I've always assumed that Bloodshot #1 1:50 variant had the same rule, however, I have just found the actual rule for Bloodshot #1 1:50 variant:
"For every 50 copies of Bloodshot #1 [reg. or pull], Harbinger #2, X-O Manowar #3 ordered [any comb.], retailers may order ONE free variant."

In other words, Bloodshot #1 1:50 variant was a LINEWIDE variant for the month of JULY 2012. There were three titles in July 2012, and the Bloodshot #1 1:50 variant was 1:50 for all titles, not just orders of Bloodshot #1.

July 2012 sales estimates were 64,612 copies (X-O #3 plus Harbinger #2 plus Bloodshot #1). So, the estimate for Bloodshot #1 1:50 variant would be about 1,300 copies, rather than the 1,000 currently estimated (as a result of the statement that Valiant printed at least 1,000 of the early books).

It is probably of interest to note that 29,224 copies of Bloodshot #1 were sold, so the 1:20 variant would be estimated at 1,460 copies.

The 1:50 variant estimate of 1,300 copies (and a note about it being a linewide variant) will be adjusted in the next update of the database.

I remember prices at the time were pretty low on Ebay... maybe $15 at the lowest. It didn't make much sense because the X-O #1 QR and the Harbinger #1 QR had never dropped that low, even though both books had more sales for the #1 issue.

Now it makes sense. :P

Now I'm wondering if that same order eligibility applied for the Shadowman #1 1:50 as well since it has had similar pricing to the Bloodshot #1 1:50...

Yeah, I got that same vibe. I got one VF at my LCS for ten bucks at one point.

The official note was: "For every 50 copies of Shadowman #1 ordered [reg. or pullbox, in any comb.], retailers may order one variant."

I can confirm because in the early days (back before I realized every book would have like 3 or more covers) I made a deal with my shop. They were planning on ordering 30 of the book but I wanted that 1:50. So I agreed to buy the extra 20 copies to put us over the top.

Speaking of updating, will the price guide have updates for 2016 books?
Is there a way of helping you with this?

Looks like it was just done on the 23rd. Maybe there isn't enough information or they can't get a solid fix on the prices? Just a wild guess, I'd imagine the people working the price guide are doing it for free, and I'd also imagine it takes a considerable amount of time to complete. We maybe only looking at what, one ever 6 months depending on availability? Even with the latest update, it seems the prices lag behind just a little. 9.6 #1 Harbinger states roughly $280 for the last 2 months, yet I haven't seen one for less than $315, many closer to $350. I understand asking price versus actual paid price.

There wasn't one comic store in my area that bought monthly 50 Valiant comics in 2012. I would guess that goes for half the stores in North America. So that 1:50 quote may actually be high unless Valiant prints them by total sales and keeps unqualified store ones for later. Can a store get more than one, say if they bought 100, 150, 200 or etc. do they get 2-5. I always have to get my low run variances online. sucks to be me.

I believe X-O #1 QR also had some type of incentive 2-4 months after the relaunch. I'm trying to remember what it was. Hmmmm.

I update the price guide with Ebay sale prices (and GPAnalysis data) weekly.

However, the database itself doesn't have books printed since about a year ago. Those take a long time to enter by hand, and since valiantdatabase.com was also compiling them, my hope was to borrow the data from that site (with permission).

Unfortunately, that hasn't worked either, so I have been able to access the official Previews Retailer Order information, but it's in PDF and text formats, not database formats.

Once I have all the latest books added to the database, I'll go back through my Ebay records and line up the sales for those additional books (I have the sales data all the way back to their original release last year).

Long story short, I'm working on adding books printed since about a year ago... and I'm hoping it will be more automated in the future.

(If I was billing for my time on this whole update process, it would be over $10,000 easily... but since it's free... I'll do it when I get to it.) :P

:hope:

If it helps any, you can get the last year's worth of previews info from the dcbs website in excel format. I could even compile all the VEI listings in a spreadsheet and send them to you pretty easily.

I remember now.

The book was X-O Manowar #1 4th Print.

If you ordered an XX amount (maybe it was 50), you would receive 1x XO-QR #1 (those books were in pretty bad shape). That's how I remember.

Thanks for remembering... There were definitely 1,000 copies of the 2012 variants, so I'm not surprised there were still (leftover) QR variants for X-O #1 available in July/August 2012 with the 4th prints.

That data looks the same as my new process, and I have the additional information about the cost to the retailer and the discount rules (which might be useful sometime). :thumb:
