Why did VEI take the chinese money?

Post by valiantdude »

I was thinking today, what would have happened if valiant had not sold a stake to DMG. What was the point? I don't understand why a person would give a controlling interests to a Communist, hitlarian government, knowing that they were working around-the-clock to take your IPs from you...wtf..
With all the info coming out about Chinese censorship, and already knowing the fact that muslims are in concentration camps, organs are being harvested, etc..
It grosses me out to think that some of our favorite American made, comic book characters, are stuck like POWs in a Chinese hellscape

Initially DMG did not have control however they gained control when the Cuneos sold their shares to them, the first thing they did was to fire Dinesh and install Dan Mintz as CEO.

Had the Cuneos not sold out to DMG Dinesh would very likely still be CEO.

I think Dinesh and company were in such a hurry to start making movie and tv shows based on the Valiant IP, they made some poor business decisions. They were into the idea of a cinematic universe from the beginning, rather than building a solid fan base for the comics first.

If they had tried to get 5 years of publishing behind them BEFORE they started considering movies/TV, Valiant would be in a much better position right now...(or maybe out of business).

They took money because it was a fantastic opportunity to grow and expand the brand.

Yes, a certain level of risk exists in any large business move; however, it is HIGHLY LIKELY that Dinesh and Co. saw DMG as the “big break” they were looking for to make dreams come true.

Problem is that motives and intent are difficult to see early on, and they would have had zero way of knowing what would eventually happen. It is easy to Monday morning QB this now; however, had I been in the same position as Dinesh at the time, I might have made the exact same deal.

But china? Morals? Ethics? I'm just trying to put myself in their shoes..and consciously be like, 'okay I know about all this stuff, (Chinese communism, atrocities, sweatshops), but it's a lot of money'
How do you turn a blind eye from a business sense?
From even a karmic perspective it seems like they could've attracted more success by being cleaner energetically..
Not selling to satan, or Trusting satan to be a business partner, or investor period... from a biblical perspective I think we all know what working with satan does and how that turns out
I'm not religious btw just sayin...

It wasn’t just the Cuneos that sold them there stake it was also getting Jason Kataries share that put them into the controlling position they found themselves in..

Pretty sure there was also a contact clause that allowed DMG to assert themselves more IF a film wasn't ready by a certain date. I think they missed that date, and DMG exercised their clause-given power.

I won't pretend to know a lot about the business & investment details of VEI, but one thing that has been obvious to any fan of Valiant from before the bailout was that Dinesh loves these characters. For the Cuneos it was perhaps more a business decision. I don't know how much influence each person had regarding new investments, but if I had to bet, I would say that Dinesh wouldn't have made decisions that would result in the loss of control of the characters he loved if it was totally in his hands. His tweets around the time of the completion of the DMG takeover (about history repeating) suggests to me that, like Shooter's Valiant, he needed investors' money to get the ball rolling on VEI, and those investors had the pull to bring in DMG investment, even if it meant risking losing control of the characters.
If you're not a *SQUEE*, you're okay with me.

I think the DMG deal was a simple case of DMG had capital to invest and VEI needed an influx of capital to keep producing at the rate they were, attracting bigger names, increase marketing, etc. Plus, DMG was a foot in the door to make movie deals.

They were a minority investor and no threat to the creative side. The takeover was a hostile one with several people "selling to the enemy". I don't think the creatices at VEI saw it coming u til it was too late.

Dino made out well from what I hear, but I'm sure the money just lessens the blow of losing control to DMG who looks to be running the company into the ground. I sure he'd rather be helming the company as they break into Hollywood after so much work done to pull them from the ashes.

Because it's business, not politics or ethics. Do you buy anything made in China? Lots of companies operate in China.

China is a lamentable state and I dislike a lot about it. But in business, money is money. :twocents:

Also, DMG isn't China. It's an American entrepreneur who saw an j tapped business opportunity in China and filled a niche to market American movies there. If DMG is China then Toyota is American.

Are you referring to China communists or communists in general? Either way, you're not exactly wrong, but I'd have to add that predatory capitalism as done in the good ol' US of A is pretty damn monstrous too. Throw in a perpetual war machine designed to profit off death (Innocents be damned), accepted torture practice, and government based on legalized bribery, and I'm not sure we have lots of room to demonize China
I've been looking everywhere for the ultra-rare Turok vs Blister issue. Anybody able to help me out?

Valiantdude... Do you make sure that none of your electronics use Chinese parts?
If you're using anything that's made in China, you're also guilty of supporting the "communist monsters"

I have a feeling the downfall was caused more by Kothari than Cuneo. Just my thoughts.

Are there any comic characters that have been around for a while that are owned/controlled by someone that needs some "investment"?

My take on the Cuneos is that they are inverstors first and foremost. Their goal is to get the biggest return on their investment. Money talks and bull *SQUEE* walks.
