Weekend Valiant game...pick what I read next

Post by Oxmyx »

I'm sure just about everybody is a little like me, with a ever growing backlog of things we want to read...

My version of the game is limited to what I have on hand, that I already want to read. I just want to read so much.

I did this once before, and it went pretty well.
Post your own handful of options to vote on.

Up this week:

VH1 Archer and Armstrong Santa issue (#10 I think)

VEI Unity #0 in the TPB

VEI Brittania #1

VH1 Chaos Effect: Secrets of the Valiant Universe

VH1 Eternal Warrior Yearbook #1
I've been looking everywhere for the ultra-rare Turok vs Blister issue. Anybody able to help me out?

Tarheel, I just finished Brittania #1.

I took me two weekends, a half each.
I had other things going on, clearly.

I was very impressed with the character art. Nero is the clear standout to me, although he made the manservant slave of Axios memorably drawn as well.

Good art, generally, very good, but I appreciate the characters the most.

I was pretty surprised when I had read the first half of the book and still had no mention of Brittania at all. It did finally come, and I get why character origin is very important, and let me just say that this kind of character development is very cool in a comic. I applaud it.

I just question the writer's choice of not adding a teaser for the Brittania mystery horror at the opening of the book. Perhaps the whole flashback thing seemed cliche and overdone.

Well, I have no clue when I'll get to #2 or the TPB but I'm 100% for it now if I see it for sale somewhere.

How was your read? Probably quicker than mine!

Dangit, man. I missed this. Okay you're vote is next then. I'm glad you picked this one because I am stuck halfway through a OTV podcast Christmas episode that I paused so I wouldn't spoil this issue. After this, I can get one little corner of my life back in order

Okay, many many days later and I am finally caught up this far. The Santa issue of AA was actually #20 but I read #10 too because I hadn't yet and had been meaning to AND a bit more A+A sounded fun.

The Santa issue was definitely more fun than #10. Just about all the VH1 A+A seem like pretty low-stakes stories, and both these are going along with that. I guess there were funny moments in #10 if you were into making fun of the British. The funniest line was along the lines of "Is the food really that bad?" when Armstrong and Ivar were passing out.
The mummy man is still a story I wanna resolve. I have not read the issues yet that explain who he is.
Anyone else notice that the picture of Nefertiti looks in the face an awful lot like Archer? Ugh. A little disturbing.

The Santa issue had some good stuff. Some good panels. I especially enjoyed Armstrong's face with cutting his eyes when the gangbangers drive back for a second pass. I thought it was funny how Archer keeps saying he won't hit a woman. I don't know if he ever had to face a female villian (aside from Mothergod) but that would be interesting. Archer is confusing sometimes. Sometimes he won't hesitate to fight and other times he tries his hardest not to. The end of the issue he faces off with his "boss" and approaches him without much attempt at all of communication.

The best thing about both is they fill in gaps in my reading. I had read issues both before and after each and didn't like having all those gaps. I'm sure everyone here understands.

Well, does anyone want to make a recommendation (out of my posted options) for my reading for next weekend?

I agree with everything you wrote. The entire series is worth reading. The back story on the vestals was another highlight for me.

Brittania #1 made for a fun two weekends. In general, I am enjoying little "pick what I read" posts because it takes me outside my typical reading pattern.

After classic A+A recently, I went ahead and picked up the Unity: The United TPB on my own accord. I had my reasons. That made me want to re-read Unity Vol 1, so I'm there at the moment.

I will pick up on a "pick what I read" post after that.

Brittania question: There are two Brittania TPBs, correct? Brit and ThoseWhoAreAboutToDie?

Vol I
Vol II - Those Who Are About to Die (also drawn by JJ Ryp)
Vol III - Lost Eagles of Rome (drawn by Robert Gill)

If you like/d the first volume, you'll probably like the others too.

The only problem is that it feels like there should be another volume.

Well, there's a new weekend coming up, I thought we'd start the discussion early.

Last round, I had two issues not get voted on, and I brought them forward.

The options are:

VH1 Chaos Effect: Secrets of the Valiant Universe

VH1 Eternal Warrior Yearbook #1

Star Trek novel Engines of Destiny

VEI Bloodshot TPB Get Some!

VH1 Eternal Warrior #1 (Unity Saga)

VH1 XO Manowar TPB Retribution

Cleopatra novel by H. Rider Haggard

VEI Eternal Warrior TPB Days of Steel

VEI Quantam and Woody by PreistBright Vol 1

The fourth volume would have tied Brittania in with the rest of the VU. You got a fanfic idea? Mine is that he meets the Eternal Warrior and gets involved with the Roman precursor to Darque.

I was telling my wife about Engines of Destiny earlier this year! We could not find it on audiobook so we listened to Probe instead.

Not sure quite where I heard about it, but it was probably either a podcast or YouTube talking about the Nexus, and the mechanics thereof. I had no idea the book existed. Somehow it had escaped my notice, but I was very excited when I heard of it. I always thought the Nexus never got properly explained...or even properly unexplainable-ed.

I saw an online YouTube comment that helped the Generations part of it at least. I'm curious to see if this agrees.

Was this a formal nomination? or merely conversation? I'm actually a little doubtful if I should have included a Trek novel in a Valiant game to begin with, but what is the use of a game without competition?

Yes, I think meeting Gilad would make most sense.

The threat could have to do with the House of the Death (Nergal) and the beginning of the Alpha.

Maybe the story could take place right after Nero's death, based on this legend...
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nero_Redivivus_legend

According to the wiki page for Nero that legend mostly arose in the Eastern regions and it would make sense for Axia to go there, after the first 3 series were about the Northern borders (Brittania, Germania), Rome itself, and the Southern Borders (Egypt). This story could also have an effect on the present day of the VU, re-establishing the House of the Death. They could summon the Alpha again leading to a War of Death....and the doom that was foreshadowed in Book of Death wouldn't have been the result of Darque's doing but actually the Alpha's. With the re-appearance of the Alpha Gilad would then know what to do because Axia had told him back in the day. As of now, present day Gilad doesn't know the Alpha has been released (again).

Nope.

We're talking about this friendly fella....

The only "good" thing that came out of Harbinger Renegade (#6 and #0).

I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't want to read it!
Thanks, dude.
I didn't know what to expect from this little game, but Q+W still kind of surprised me as the nominee.
But that's why this "crowdsourcing" is kinda cool.
I'll get on it. But it's a trade, so it might take me two or three weekends worth of free time.

Last weekend I read Unity TPB The United and that made me feel the need to reread Unity TPB To Kill a King and I have just a handful of pages left, so gimme a few moments tho...I got remind myself where Unity Vol 1 left Harada...and why Harada didn't just pop Gilads and Ninjaks heads like pimples.

Quantum & Woody!
Finished! Just 6 months later, but I feel accomplished.

It's not exactly Q+Ws fault that it took me that long.

I've had relatively sparse free time for the last 6 months. Many people are spending a lot more time at home than normal, but I'm an "essential worker" in a factory keeping the economy running. And to maintain a resemblance of normal product output, my company is working us crazy overtime. It's been very profitable but very unpleasant.

But at the same time, P-Bs Q+W wasn't for me a page turner like some other Valiant books. I did like it though.

Someone else, this time. Make a suggestion from what I already own?
