early foreign Valiant
*I will update this original post & photos whenever I find new information*
Anyone have information about early foreign Valiant media? I found some foreign (French and Swedish) media that I found interesting. I was surprised I didnt find much information on them here in the forums. Let me know if you know of others. List of known (to me) foreign media of early/pre-Valiant comics:
Pictures:
Super Mario Bros (French), La Bd De Game Boy (French), F-Zero Nintendo of Japan game
Various Nintendo Magasinets (Swedish) showing the ones with Valiant artwork on the cover. Nr 1 1990 is the first issue

- Game Boy hard cover (French)
- Super Mario Bros hard cover (French)
- F-Zero Nintendo of Japan game (Japan) - box art and comic inside instruction booklet
- Kenny Kid and Hop Hop (KFC) comic (Spanish)
- Nintendo Magasinet (Swedish) - Published 1990-1994: 4 issues 1990, 10 issues 1991, 10 issues 1992, 8 issues 1993, and 7 issues 1994. 1990-1992 contain Valiant artwork, 1993-1994 more game oriented without Valiant artwork. Subscriptions had a Power Player insert; retail did not. Larger publication numbers compared to other nordic versions.
- Nintendo Magasinet (Finnish) - same number of issues as Swedish version(need to confirm?) but translated.
- Nintendo Magasinet (Norwegian) - same number of issues as Swedish version(need to confirm?) but translated.
- Nintendo Magasinet (Danish) - not as many issues as Swedish version.

Re: foreign early Valiant
Picked out one of the Nintendo Magasinets to provide pictures and details:
Front and back covers with US version on left side as comparison:
1st page has "Voyager Communications Inc" on lower right (wont show on low resolution image); Power Player insert for subscriptions only is over 30 pages full of tips:
Contained 3 stories. I have the US version on the left side for comparison:
- Nintendo Magasinet Nr 11/12 1991
- Swedish version. There are four different nordic versions.
- Front cover has the same art as (US) Nintendo Comics System #9
- 50 pages
- Contains 3 Valiant stories - 30 pages of comic stories
- Story #1 from Nintendo Comics System #9: The Doctor is in... over his head
- Story #2 from Legend of Zelda #2: Thief in the Night
- Story #3 from Adventures of Super Mario Bros: The Revenge of the Pipe Ooze
- Subscription version that contains the Power Player insert. Retail version does not contain Power Player

Re: foreign early Valiant
Those are… Swedish? They look definitely Scandinavian and the spelling of ar as opposed to er suggests Swedish.

F-Zero Nintendo of Japan: Jim Shooter writer, Art Nichols pencil, Bob Layton ink
Valiant did the box art and the comic inside the instruction booklet.

Re: foreign early Valiant
Yes, got most of them. Beat up copies are rather easy to find. I also usually look around in french second hand stores and once found the french book. That's the only copy I've seen before these posts.
About Nintendo-magasinet they mainly contain articles about the games and just a few pages of comics (and even so one issue contains a letter from a reader who complains that pages are wasted on comics). I know it exists in Norway as well, but have never checked them out and I have no idea whether they contain comics.
This is a great thread. I had actually never compared the versions before.

I added new photos and a lot more details! I did some research and connected with a fan from Denmark. He gave me detailed information on the Nintendo Magasinets that I thought was very interesting.

Are the Danish versions printed like the Swedish ones but everyone has a potato in his mouth?

Re: foreign early Valiant
It's funny that the Japanese version still has the English wording.
On the German and Italian versions of the game the comic strips (on the back of the box) had been translated properly.
Re: early foreign Valiant
In Finland it was not called Nintendo Magasinet but Nintendo-Lehti. All Finnish issues are available in Internet Archive.

Re: early foreign Valiant
I found French and German releases of early Valiant. They are pretty cool, they are tall magazine size.
Le Journal Nintendo published by Tournon in France.
Super Mario Bros. Comic-Magazin published by Condor Verlag in Germany.
The back covers of the german magazines also have a ad for Captain N.

Re: early foreign Valiant
Wow, I have not seen most of these. There are probably fewer copies of these that exist today than the rarest VEI variants.
