Trying to find a plan for large collection of slabs
A few years ago my father-in-law passed away. He was an avid collector of slabbed valiant comics. We are now looking into selling my mother-in-law's house and I want to find a home for these comics. There is also a large collection of non-slabbed books (valiant and non-valiant, many 80s and 90s comics) that I want to deal with if possible --- those, however, have a fraction of the book value of the slabbed valiant books. (I am a comic collector as well, but personally i collect for reading -- I have my own copies of most of these books (non-gold) for reading purposes. I am not well versed in dealing with the graded collector's market.)
My mother-in-law's home is a long trip away, so i need to come up with a plan that either involves selling the whole collection to a single interested buyer or makes it worthwhile to ship the books back to my own home when we sell her house. Suggestions are welcome. (I'd be happy to ship to someone reputable that would sell them on consignment, for example). The actual shipping is likely to happen this summer.
The slabbed books that I have records of (there might be more hiding in other boxes that we didn't go through yet) are all boxed and listed below. All of the slabs are graded 9.8 unless noted otherwise. I recorded pictures of their spines last time i was there in order to get this rough listing, but the slabs are all in clear plastic bags so some are not easily identifiable from my pictures.
There are many duplicates of key issues. I believe there are also a lot of unslabbed gold books, plus at least 2 unslabbed bloodshot 0 platinums (that I believe my father-in-aw was getting ready to ship out for grading when he passed away).
Any help, suggestions, or offers are appreciated.

As far as I know he was not active here. He did most of his purchasing through ebay under the userid aug002 (and from a search on this forum, at least some people were aware of his activity as he was building this collection).

Oh yes, he was quite the legend. Sad to hear he's no longer with us.notadragon wrote: ↑Fri Apr 19, 2024 4:57:03 pm As far as I know he was not active here. Re: Trying to find a plan for large collection of slabs
notadragon wrote: ↑Fri Apr 19, 2024 9:27:51 am A few years ago my father-in-law passed away.
If memory serves, Gordon lived in Hawaii, correct?

Re: Trying to find a plan for large collection of slabs
I have a few emails from a Valiant collector named Gordon. I won’t use his last name here. I’m so sorry for your loss. I have a similar passion as your FIL. He is a kindred spirit to me. We are a bit of a small crazy pool of people.
I wonder what my kids will do with my mess of Valiant. Heritage certainly won’t be taking it. I’m already having those conversations with my wife and kids.
I’m happy to chat if it’s helpful. I also am likely to be interested in a few, LOL! The important thing for you is to figure out how to sell to maximize value, especially if the collection is located where I think it is. I know a guy in Asia who has quite a collection and it will be more difficult to sell it if he gets into that kind of place. Please DM me and I can provide details.
There are a handful of folks here whom I’m sure will help in getting the word out for purchasers. It’s admittedly not a great time to sell Valiant items, but there is a lot of good stuff here.
Best,
Steve (nycjadie - Steve Coates)

What horrible news. Gordon and I fought tooth and nail over books for years. He sure loved Valiant. I hope his passing was peaceful.

Re: Trying to find a plan for large collection of slabs
My condolences to your FIL. Yes, his handle was well known. I think I would be interested in several of the books, like most of us here. There is still quite a significant amount of value there, even thought Valiant books have really dropped in value there. Did he only collect Valiant or is there a comparable collection like this of other books, like Marvel, Batman, Spawn, etc?

Holy cow, condolences on your loss. He was definitely well known on this board even if he didn't participate. And that collection looks pretty much like I would have imagined. Good luck with the sale.

Re: Trying to find a plan for large collection of slabs
I am assuming that is me. Between Goldkey, VH1, Nintendo and VEI I've got over 1,350 Valiant CGC 9.8 slabs. If I ever decided to sell them I'd have no idea how I'd got about doing it. (And I have plenty of non-Valiant slabs and unslabbed comics). My wife jokes I better outlive her and the kid has no interest in them. I'd probably have to ship everything to North American and have someone sell stuff for me.
I did stupidly sell around 350 slabs in 2012, as the books are worth much more now. They were all CGC 8.0 Silver Age Marvel and high grade Barks books. The Silver Age Marvel I sold myself, Fedex wasn't too bad back then and the books were higher dollar value so shipping wasn't too much of the total sales price. The Duck books I sold via Heritage. How I'd deal with my Valiant books I have no idea. I've been tempted to do something since no one else in the family is interested.

Wow. I've never met another big Valiant slab collector in Asia other than me. I've met plenty of other large comic collectors over here but no one else that likes Valiant as much as I do (well besides Dinesh - who liked it so much he bought the company). That is pretty cool.

Re: Trying to find a plan for large collection of slabs
For anyone interested, I'm going to be sending most of these books to comiclink at the start of august.
I will be contacting the people who have shown interest in specific books over the next few days to see if they want to buy them directly. If you have any specific interests and want to make a reasonable offer, send me a Message.

This book doesn't exist in CGC.
Was this graded by another company?

Re: Trying to find a plan for large collection of slabs
While almost all of the books are cgc graded, this one is graded by "CGGROUP WORLD" which is apparently an old name for pgx world. I will likely get this one regraded considering their reputation. The other platinums are 9.8 graded from cgc.

Re: Trying to find a plan for large collection of slabs
For all those who might be interested, some of the books have bene sold to people on this forum and are on their way to those people now. Most of the rest are going to comiclink to be auctioned (I will post here again when i have more details).
I have kept the bloodshot platinums and will be getting all of the non-cgc graded ones graded so that I have an idea of what quality books I have available. I will post again when I have them back in hand and am ready to decide how to distribute them and for how much.
Regarding the 12 boxes or so of raw valiant books, if you are ever in Honolulu, Hawaii, please visit Idea's Books and Music and ask for Kevin -- he is the new owner of most of my father-in-law's ungraded collection. Considering the demand here on the island I suspect he'll be in possession of mostly-complete runs of valiant for quite a while to come.
